You are Cal Phoenix, the Freeway Warrior, champion and protector of Dallas Colony One. From the sanctuary of Big Spring your convoy of survivors begins the next stage of its life-or-death exodus: a journey to the fortified border town of El Paso, a destination that lies hundreds of miles beyond the sun-scorched wasteland of West Texas. In Slaughter Mountain Run your mission is to rescue Kate Norton from the clutches of your arch enemy - the H.A.V.O.C leader Mad Dog Michigan. You have just seven days to free her and to rendezvous with the colony before it runs the gauntlet of fire that protects the only mountain road to El Paso.
Joe Dever was an award-winning British fantasist and game designer. Originally a musician, Dever became the first British winner of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Championship of America in 1982.
He created the fictional world of Magnamund as a setting for his Dungeons & Dragons campaigns. In 1984 he released the first book of the Lone Wolf series of young-adult gamebooks, and the series has since sold over 10.2 million copies worldwide. He experienced difficulty with his publishers as the game books market began to contract in 1995, until publication ceased in 1998 before the final four books (numbers 29-32) were released. Since 2003, however, the series has enjoyed a strong revival of interest in France, Italy, and Spain following the re-release of the gamebook series in these countries.
From 1996 onwards, Dever was involved in the production of several successful computer and console games. He also contributed to a Dungeons & Dragons-style role playing game for Lone Wolf published by Mongoose Publishing (UK) in 2004. Currently he is Lead Designer of a Lone Wolf computer game, and he is writing the final books in the Lone Wolf series. No official publication schedule exists for these works.
I found this one pretty underwhelming. It was mostly fine, but not at all memorable. The main things I remember about it are not killing Mad Dog Michigan when you have the chance and the few items I picked up but never found a use for. Maybe some of them are useful on other paths, but on the path I took I think only standard items ever came up as useful. I'm also already getting quite used to certain tricks this series uses to keep the player on track, like giving you a CB Radio (or certain other items) whenever you need one (if you don't have one already) so you don't really get a choice about carrying one or not.
Since it’s the second anniversary of the author’s passing and I’ve recently acquired the new edition of this book, it seemed rather appropriate to have a go at this one today. I’d only read the first one in the series previously - I’d gravitated much more to his Lone Wolf series as a kid - but I’ve always had a predilection for post-apocalyptic storylines. Fantastic stuff and great fun.
