In 1988, 12-year-old Emery is looking forward to spending the summer cooling off in the sprinkler, escaping the boredom of church, and begging her parents for a kitten. Instead, she discovers a powerful entity lurking within the walls of the family’s home. The eerie vibrations in the wall grant Emery and her three sisters whatever they desire; from fresh lipstick and new boyfriends, to revenge against a local predator. All the while, her parents impose an increasingly bizarre set of rules and rituals intended to keep the sisters safe. After the disappearance of their parents, the sisters’s uncle, a disgraced TV faith healer, moves in, forcing the girls to create “real miracles,” unaware of the apocalyptic threat posed to the entire town. An exploration of the powerful bonds of sisterhood, Sacrifice of the Sisters Lot is a riveting tale of love, betrayal and sacrifice.
I loved this weird, gothic horror book. It was full of darkness. The horror elements were great, but I wanted soooo much more info about those horror elements. I have questions and wish we could learn more about it. Can't say too much, don't want spoilers. I also love a good dysfunctional family that is really weird and you delivered on that. My favorite character is also the narrator, Emery.
This book is well written but it is so, so uncomfortable to read. For some reason, I thought that it would be a campy book about the risks of wishes and how faith healers prey on people. It's not that.
The majority of the book is about abuse. Family and workplace abuse. The last 25% of the book is full of highly religious abuse. It's uncomfortable to read, there's no way around it.
It's a good book, but not something I'd read again.
This was a did not finish for me.. I struggled hard to even get through half.. I gave it a decent effort, but nothing grabbed me. Very little character development. No attachment to anyone. Felt like there was a lot you just had to read between the lines for. Nothing came across straight to the point. I was bored. Being someone from the Niagara region, I had high expectations for this one. I’m actually really disappointed in it..
Chris! You hit it out of the revival tent! A tremendous read - emotional, gory, tense and delightful. I love the sisters, especially Emery! I hope she has more to tell you in at least another book! For lovers of the haunted house trope, this book is a must-read. Also - it's so funny! Which is what makes it 'delightful'...de -LIGHT- ful...watch out for the fire!
Chris has created a heck of a haunted house in this weird - disturbing in places - but compelling piece of horror. It follows four sisters through their time existence in a bizarre house, in a world populated by very odd people.
- Canadian horror story set in the Niagara region - A possessed house - A shady faith healer (if you enjoyed Stephen King’s revival, this has similar vibes) - Lots of WTFery
