A half-forgotten evil has arisen from the grave to stalk the Old World in search of fresh blood and new victims to enslave. Count Reiner Heydrich, undead Vampire Lord, is ancient beyond the reckoning of mortals. This time, however, there is someone on his trail, a brave hero who is determined that he shall not succeed in his evil plans. That someone is YOU!
I remember doing an eBay search once and discovering that this book was retailing for something like $750.00. I immediately wrapped it in plastic and kept it somewhere safe, and have only recently decided to pull it out and read it. Well, I guess I’m glad I didn’t try to sell it for that much because while the condition is good, it really isn’t that good – the previous owner had written in it, and a couple of the pages were torn, so it is certainly not worth that much (if it ever actually was). To be honest, it’s probably not worth going through the hassle of selling it anyway.
Well, this is sort of a follow on from Vault of the Vampire, and has you meeting up with somebody who is on a quest to finally deal with this vicious fiend. However, he is killed during the night, and this eventually sends you on a huge quest which takes you through a monastery, a vampire’s mansion, and finally into a crypt in the depths of the earth. In fact, I was quite surprised about how much they managed to fit in this book, especially since there are only 400 paragraphs. Then again, the writers have been pretty clever with the way they build their books.
This was actually pretty good to be honest with you, though I certainly wouldn’t put the writing down as anywhere near the skill of Fyodor Dostoyevsky (though he wrote in Russian, so, in reality, you sort of have to rely upon the skill of the translators as opposed to his actual writing style – maybe I’ll compare it to Hunter S Thompson). Still, the story is pretty cool, which is half the reason I read these books using a solution, namely because I really don’t have too much time to actually do them properly, and the fact that the internet has provided us with a slew of solutions anyway.
So, this was certainly a bit of a relief to some of the other offerings that I had read recently, even though I do find that vampires tend to be somewhat overdone these days. Still, this is only the second one where the vampire is the main antagonist, and I do feel that they have done a pretty good job with it as well. The adventure is quite broad, and tricky too, with the way that they tend to do them at this end of the series. However, getting your hands on this particular book is, well, somewhat difficult.
A fun plot, investigation, multiple ways to win, and great illustrations make this title 3.5 stars. Unfortunately, it's too long and difficult, even with all the helpful items you can find along the way. The combats and access to nearly every area each playthrough make the book more gruelling than fun. Still, there's a lot to love in this title.
A strong, well-written story, let down by abysmal editing. There are just far too many errors here and, even with a series on its last legs, a major publisher should not have been putting out such a shoddy product.
