"Darkthrone" is the second tale in the epic "Zagor Chronicles" series, revealing the full horror of the necromancer's plans to lay waste to all that is good and true in a land of fable, majesty and deep magic.
Ian Livingstone, co-author of the best-selling "Fighting Fantasy" gamebooks, brings you an enthralling new saga.
This book is part of the (very) extended Fighting Fantasy universe and boy, what a story it is. This is the pick of the Zagor Chronicles by a country mile. Ostensibly written by Ian Livingstone and Carl Sargent (Keith Martin), I suspect that Sargent did most of the work.
It is basically an extended novelization of The Legend of Zagor and works terrifically well, You get a real feel for the dungeon crawl through Castle Argent, with all sorts of fascinating encounters. The fighting isn't over-laboured, hence there is no blow by blow account. This keeps the pace and it does rattle along at a good rate.
It's a shame that the art of Legend of Zagor by the wonderful Martin McKenna wasn't used in this book, as that really would have been the icing on the cake.
I pretty much forgot everything that was in this story. I mean, I guess I remembered bits and pieces as I read them, but before re-reading I had forgotten it all. I guess I'd forgotten a lot about the series in general, for e.g. I totally forgot that Anvar had his own magic. I forgot all about him being a Bear dude who became a Wolf clan dude. I also forgot about the magic stuff they tend to always put on their swords if Jallarial has got the potions available. :)
I forgot that Mahnsikir ended up as he did, as an undead creature - what a nasty way to go! I forgot that Zagor was double the height of a normal man. I also totally forgot about the dragon and all the eggs they destroyed. I actually felt sorry for the dragon as they hacked away at it, 'cause I'm a bit of an animal conservationist or whatever. :) I wanted it to escape.
Basically I forgot the whole story, so it's good I re-read it. And yes, I still love it, and it's still really easy to read.
