Welcome to Wrexham , Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s TV series about their shock buyout of failing non-League Welsh soccer club Wrexham AFC, has propelled it to unimaginable new global popularity. Lifelong fan Peter Read looks at his own obsessive support, the club’s history, and developments over the first two seasons under the Hollywood stars.
Peter Read is a professor of modern French literature and visual arts at the University of Kent, Canterbury, United Kingdom. He has published books and essays on Apollinaire and his circle, on other French poets, and on artists including Pablo Picasso, Raoul Dufy, Auguste Rodin, and Alberto Giacometti.
A thoroughly enjoyable read. Given the almost rag to riches tale, it’s nice to hear about the Wrexham story from someone who cares about the club and has been there through the thin and thin times as he quotes in the book. Many are only aware of Wrexham from recent times and history, but Read details life as a Wrexham fan, being someone from just outside the city, the pride and culture of the place and incorporates humour to make it a very easy and memorable read. Each chapter covers a different tale and factors in so many different aspects of Wrexham football club which many of us wouldn’t consider or weren’t aware of. Really fun, easy to read and insightful. Reads passion, dedication and unconditional love to the club are evident throughout.
Disappointed in this book. Only a third of the book was around the last couple of seasons. It was very rambling and there were a lot of factual errors that should have been picked up in the editing process.
Really enjoyable book on a club who as a child my club Hull regularly faced, they’ve gone to hell and back and this book tells that story fantastically.
Very nice book. I read this while on vacation, it really is a great way to spend my time not doing fun things, by doing something that does not include my phone.
