In Bed with the Badge: The Barbara Sheehan Story

Rate this book
In Bed with the Badge is this generation's Burning Bed. Ms. Joyce and her brother, Raymond, tell the bloodcurdling story of how their father, Ray Sheehan retired NYPD Detective turned wife-beating into an art form by utilizing the very tactics he was taught in the police force. In a terrifying moment of kill or be killed, the authors mother, Barbara Sheehan, shot her husband with his own weapon. Following the not guilty verdict of second-degree murder, Barbara Sheehan, was found guilty of possession of a second weapon and is awaiting appeal of that verdict. The authors recount the details of the years of abuse their mother and they sustained at the hands of their father, and open up a dialogue about the controversial defense known as Battered Woman Syndrome.

This is a non-fiction book. It is an account of extreme spousal abuse written by the abused woman's grownup daughter and son. It is absolutely unbelivable what this woman and her children had to endure for so many years. I was practically cheering when Barbara finally shot her husband. The case is still ongoing, she was found not guilty on two counts, one was murder, but they are trying to put her in prison for the gun. Unbelievable!! When I finished the book I googled more information about this case. I remember when it happened but didn't realize that the case was still ongoing.

This is a worthwhile read. Barbara's children felt that they should write this book to help others to know that there is help, good competent help, out there for people in similar situations and to help others recognize the signs of a possible abusive relationship before it gets started.

It is a well written book that is written by Barbara's children.
They written about how their father Raymond Sheehan was a abusive NY police officer.
It was a fast read.
I hope that all charges in the end will be dropped for Barbara!

While no one should expect five-star writing skills here, the daughter tells her incredibly painful story with straightforward honesty. Most of all, you get frustrated with all of the friends and family members who didn't recognize the very obvious signs of domestic violence.
