Penguin Pete is back, and all the penguins come out to greet them on their return, among them a cute little girl penguin named Pat, who gives Pete a bunch of flowers. Pete is enchanted, and the very next day he sets out to find Pat. What follows is romance and a big wedding, attended by all of Pete's friends. Full color.
Marcus Pfister was born in Berne, Switzerland, and began his career as a graphic artist in an advertising agency. In 1983, he decided to dedicate more time to artistic pursuits, and began to write and illustrate his first book, The Sleepy Owl, which was published in 1986. His best-known work to date is The Rainbow Fish, which has remained on bestseller lists across the United States since 1992.
Marcus does most of his illustrations for children's books in watercolors. He begins each book by stretching watercolor paper over a wooden board so that it won't warp when wet. He then copies his rough sketches onto the paper in pencil. At this point, he is ready to begin painting. For backgrounds and blended contours, he uses wet paint on wet paper to get a softer effect. For sharper details, he first lets the paper dry, then paints the final picture layer by layer. When the illustration is complete he cuts the paper from the wooden board.
For books that feature holographic foil stamping, he then tapes a piece of transparent film over the art and indicates with a black marker where the foil stamping should be. The foil stamping is then applied during the production process after the pages are printed and before the final binding.
Marcus and his wife, Kathryn, work together in Berne, where they live with their three children.
When I was 6 I saw that book and I was obsessed with it. I wanted to buy it so bad that I scraped together every cent that I had, every coin I had safed from Christmas or my birthday. So yeah, this is the first book I bought and 29 years later I still have and love it. It makes me feel very nostalgic. I always love books with a message and that one's is that you'll be loved even if you do not look like the others (like Pat with her blue beak which was the cause that the other penguins were mean to her until Pit came along and fell in love with her because of her beak). It's simple but so nice.
I've read thousands of picture books over the years. I usually only get on goodreads to rate them if I find ones I really love. This book is one I read that was awful though, so I have to rate it. The writing is really wordy and it's a very boring story for children. The story jumps right in, like it's a sequel or something and then just ends abruptly. Weird. How do authors get books like this published?
I agree with another person's review, the story is all over the place. It's cute and the illustrations are nice, but it wasn't very well written, even for a children's book.
Terrible story that doesn’t know what it’s even about. Is it about arctic adventures, about penguin romance with Pat, about fatherhood to Tim, or about Tim overcoming his social anxiety? It wanders and demonstrates a lack of editing and focus, appearing nothing more than self-indulgent on the part of the author. I was surprised it was written by the writer of Rainbow Fish series, as it demonstrated amateurish writing that I would expect from a self-published first time author with no editorial oversight.
I enjoyed the picture book, Penguin Pete and Pat. It included pretty water-colorings paintings throughout the story. I think this book would be appropriate for a kindergarten classroom because it discusses different colors and how colors mix and create different colors. Penguin Pete and Pat is a joyful story about how a family of penguins came together.
Penguin Pete returns from his travels and meets Pat. They develop a relationship and soon marry. Pete invites all his friends he met during his travels. Tim is soon born.
This is a story about a penguin named Pete who is adventurous and comes home to find a beautiful girl penguin with a blue beak. Lots of love is in the penguin air and it all leads to a lovely penguin romance. I won't spoil the rest. Nice illustrations. Story is pretty good. Recommended for Gr. K-2.
Of the Penguin Pete books, this was always my favourite. I don't know why, but my 2 year-old mind just liked the idea of the 2 penguins happy together and being such good friends. I love the illustrations so much in every Marcus Pfister book.
Gentle book which opens assuming you have read the previous book (irritating). A penguin returns from adventures to meet a girl and fall in love and make a family. Cute and a must for penguin fans but a little scatty and not the best written book ever.
Soft, beautiful illustrations but the story was all over the place. At the end, I had to look back through to see who Pat was and it was a title character!
