This is the first full book in this series. Arabella Pryce, famed actress, is constrained by her husband’s will to spend a year in Colorado, living in the hotel he built, in order to receive her inheritance. She doesn’t want to leave New York and her beloved theater and career, but she has no choice. Her arrival in Colorado is anything but graceful or welcoming, as her train is stopped by a rock slide, and a murder. She and her friend/companion/assistant Cordelia, and her little dog Bijou, find themselves in the middle of a mess.

If this book is any indication of what’s to follow in this series, I can’t wait. It will keep you guessing as it offers so many plausible suspects. The book offers a tease of romance behind the hunt for the murder(s). I loved some of the character’s names. They, as with other things in the book, are filled with humor and act to lighten the underlying sadness of Arabella’s confinement and the crimes underway. There's also a ghost, that of the architect of the Arabella hotel, who offers Arabella assistance with her sleuthing.

I will admit that I had problems with a few things in this book. First, Arabella really is remarkably self-involved and a bit whiney through most of this book. Still, she steps up to do her best to help solve the crime. Second, I’m eager to learn how Arabella’s husband died. We’re told that he did, but never given any solid reason for why he died so suddenly. Small things, I admit.

I look forward to the next book in this series. I think the Colorado setting will offer some very interesting developments in the future.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the author. I thank her for her generosity, but it had no effect on this review. All opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reactions to reading this book.

The story starts on a dangerous note when Narcissa is killed.
The story then turns three weeks back, to Arabella Pryce, a theatre performer who still misses her husband terribly. The readers come to know that Arabella enjoys her life as a theatre performer and the attention she receives because of it.
Things go south for Arabella when she comes to know about her husband's will. Her husband wants her to stay in the wild West for a year in a hotel which he had bought there. Her husband makes sure that she never sells the hotel to the Archer group of companies.
All this makes sure that Arabella gives up her life as a theatre artist and moves to the wild West, along with her companion Cordelia and her little dog Bijou.
But her meeting with a theatre critic during the sudden train stop started the misfortune for Arabella. Brooks had been fired because of Arabella.
Further Arabella's entry into the town with the Sheriff does not bode well for her. It does not help that Narcissa is killed on the night that Arabella comes to the town. And she also comes to know that the hotel which her husband had bought was in an extremely rundon condition.
That turns out to be the last of her problems because Arabella becomes the prime suspect for the murder of Narcissa.
The characters and the story were cute as the change in Arabella from her time as a theatre performer to a hotel owner becomes obvious through the pages. Arabella's "sensitive" nature and Mr Blank's introduction was enjoyable. Arabella's relationship to her own mother and her understanding of Mrs Platte was another interesting glimpse in the story.
The characters, the story and the mystery were weaved very well as Arabella learns truths about her husband.
Kitty was another favourite character.
The feel of the wild West in the olden days and Arabella's sudden appearance from the rich New York to the place was also very well brought out. Frankly Arabella's husband's actions in making sure to take her away from the theatre seemed sensible as the changes in Arabella became obvious through the story and that was also why the title of the story made me laugh.
Nice enjoyable cosy mystery.

The prologue opens on a slow build up of tension that both foreshadows and overturns expectations of the rest of the book. Arabella Pryce is a complex character, consumed by her fame, in avoidance of grief, and now, suddenly, terrifyingly out of her depth. Her resilience and determination make her an admirable lead, even in spite of her haughtiness. However, she’s unhappy. She’s grieving. Misfortune upon misfortune is heaped upon her. It’s incredibly well-written discomfort, and grief, but it can be uncomfortable at times as a reader. Combined with the slow pace, repetitive introductions to townsfolk, and her lamentations at her situation, the first handful of chapters feel overlong. However, this is soon after remedied.

I understand that this is because she wants to be home, for her situation to be as it was. I can bear that. The repeated explanation, I cannot. For such a well-crafted mystery, it’s almost as though the reader isn’t trusted to retain this particular information which I found frustrating. Bovee does such great character work with Arabella. And the rest of the cast is also interesting. I really love the way Bovee writes their descriptions, especially upon introducing them. It gives such a good, immediate sense of who they are. Even when this is set up to be overturned later. All that character work, and subtlety and subterfuge – unfortunately – makes this hammering stand out all the more.

That said, once it got going, it was propulsive. Bovee has crafted such a delicious tangle of suspects and motives. For myself, personally, I found the stakes too high, and there to be too many stressors, all mounting and mounting and mounting, to be cozy. But discoveries and revelations were exciting. Bovee knows how to end on a moment of perfect tension and I had to turn the page even when I knew I’d run out of time to read and really needed to be elsewhere. Even when I expected a Chekov’s gun to go off, it still ripped the air from my lungs.

I’m happy to see this is not a standalone. I’d love to learn more about the ghost and the lore surrounding the dead. There is one character who’s shown distrust for another and I’m eager to find out why exactly that is as well as how Arabella continues to cope in La Plata Springs.

Arabella Pryce is a successful actress. However, she leaves the stage in New York City and goes out West to run her late husband’s hotel. As soon as she arrives at the hotel, there is a murder. Arabella immediately becomes the prime suspect. Arabella teams up with a ghost that haunts the hotel to find the real murderer and clear her name. Could Arabella solve the murder before she is arrested for murder?

Arabella was a hard character to like. It took most of the novel to warm up to her. She is very self-centered and vain. It was not until two-thirds of the novel that she has more compassion and gratitude towards others. I did find Arabella to be very intelligent and inquisitive. She also learned to listen to good advice from those around her to help solve the mystery. Thus, Arabella was a very competent amateur sleuth. Even though I did not find her a compelling character, I believe that she has potential in future installments.

Overall, this novel is about friendship, belonging, and ambitions. I like how the story was set on the American Frontier. It was very refreshing from the Victorian and WWII mysteries that I usually read. I also like the characters, who seemed very real and complex. I also liked the roughing ghost. The mystery was very predictable. The romance was very cliché but could be developed more in the sequel. Despite these flaws, it was fun and fast-paced! I read the story in one sitting! The Pryce of Conceit was a very entertaining and light mystery! I can’t wait for the sequel, The Pryce of Deceit! I am excited to revisit the characters that Mrs. Bovee has created! I recommend this novel for fans of The Spirit of Grace, The Secrets of the Chateau, and Echoes of the Storm!

The Pryce of Conceit is an interesting book, taking place in 1885 with quite a cast of characters. Arabella Pryce is still dealing with her grief since her late husband's death. Even though she and William were not a love match, they both loved one another in their own ways and William somewhat spoiled Arabella. Arabella is an actress, and he purchased her her own theater so her stardom could shine. However, she receives some unsettling news in his will concerning her.

William was concerned she would lose herself in her fame and acting, so a stipulation in his will states she must go out West and live for one year in a hotel that he owned and named after her. After that, all was hers. Arabella is quite distraught at this; she does not want to leave her acting or home in New York. But, along with her dearest friend, Cordelia, and her little dog, they head out West.

The ending of the trip is eventful, she finds out that her most formidable critic also went West. She meets the town sheriff in a most unladylike manner and finds out her hotel is not only haunted, but people have been murdered there. She is also finding things out about her late husband which makes her question if she ever even knew him.

There is a whole host of characters and before Arabella can even get settled, a murder is pinned on her. Who will believe her and help her out of this predicament? Possibly the ghost who only she can see is the only one who believes her, and she just might have to save herself.

This is the beginning of a series of mysteries that have to do with Arabella, an actress now turned sleuth. A unique read.

I was provided a copy of this novel by the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

THE PRYCE OF CONCEIT by Kari Bovee is the first book in The Pryce Of Murder series taking place in the year of 1885. It is the wonderfully written, page turning story of Arabella Pryce. As a young widow, she finds out that there’s a caveat to her late husband’s will that requires her to move to La Plata Springs, Colorado to maintain the Arabella Hotel, her husband’s hotel that was names after her, for a year before she can inherit the bulk of his estate.

Arabella entered into her marriage with William, a much older man, because of a need they each had. William, being a wealthy man, found Arabella attractive and was in need of a heir to his estate while Arabella desperately needed an escape from her overbearing and controlling mother. By marrying they completed both their goals. Although they didn’t spend all their time together or have the typical love for each other usually associated with marriage, they have grown quite fond of each other through their time together and it saddened her at his passing. Remembering how things were before she became so successful on the stage, which her husband helped and encouraged, she’s determined never to go back to that state of poverty again. However, the requirements of the will means she has to leave the stage where she is adored and that she loves for a whole year. Will they still love her upon her return? Can she manage to hold out for the year? YES, she must – because that’s the only way she can become sufficiently financial independent – never to be poor again!

Arriving to find the hotel in great disrepair was shocking and she knew she’d have find out why and correct the issues immediately. No way was she going to have her name on it and it not be a regular showplace – even way out here. However, when Arabella finds a young woman dead on the stairs in her motel, it changed the train of events. They find out it was not an accident, but rather murder. Soon after, Arabella is accused of the murder in a jealous rage after it was exposed that her deceased husband had been having an affair with the victim. Before she can concentrate on saving the motel, she has to clear her name. With a soiled name and without good character what future would she have when it came time to finally return to her former life? Seems that the only person in her corner is Cordelia – her assistant, companion and friend.

When a second murder occurs and someone comes forth as an eye witness naming Arabella as the murderer, will Arabella ever be able to prove her innocence? Will the sheriff follow the clues or go along with everyone else’s way of thinking? What are these feeling Arabella has when he’s around? Are those feeling mutual? How will she ever live in this town for a year if the town folks can only think of her as a murderer? Will it take the appearance of a ghost that befriends her to see what her true worth is and what the value of real friendships mean? Can he help her to decipher clues or where to hunt for more? Who killed them and why were they intent on framing Arabella?

THE PRYCE OF CONCEIT is a story that will have you reading it in one sitting as you quickly turn pages as the mystery unfolds and the accusations fly. Kari Bovee will have you loving the characters (even the ones you will have a tendency to dislike), feeling for Arabella as she struggles to clear her name (and maybe find out more about self-worth and true happiness) and seeing the possibilities of future stories highlighting some of the other characters in the story. THE PRYCE OF CONCEIT is most definitely a marvelous, well-written whodunit and a fabulous way to start a new series! It gets my FIVE STARS and I highly recommend it to everyone!

The Pryce of Conceit” by Kari Bovee is an engaging historical fiction novel that combines elements of mystery, ghostly encounters, and humor. Set in 1885, the story follows Arabella Pryce, a talented theater performer who finds herself framed for murder after arriving at a haunted hotel in Colorado.

Bovee’s writing is well-crafted, and her descriptive prose immerses the reader in the atmospheric settings of the story. The author skillfully blends historical details with a touch of the supernatural, adding a unique flavor to the narrative. The inclusion of a mischievous cryptic ghost as Arabella’s ally in her quest for innocence adds an intriguing twist to the plot.

I love the snippets of humor sprinkled throughout the story. These light-hearted moments provide a welcome relief from the tension and suspense, adding an enjoyable and entertaining element to the narrative.

The book is fast-paced, keeping readers engaged and eager to uncover the truth alongside Arabella. The plot is filled with twists and turns, as Arabella navigates through blood-stained evidence, handsome sheriffs, and libelous journalists. The author effectively builds a sense of danger and urgency, keeping readers on the edge of their seats.

The characters in “The Pryce of Conceit” are well-developed and relatable. Arabella Pryce, the determined and driven heroine, captures the reader’s sympathy as she fights to clear her name and protect her reputation. The supporting characters, such as Sheriff Clayton Marshall, Arabella’s companion Cordelia, and the journalist/theater critic Atticus Brooks, add depth and complexity to the story.

Final thoughts: “The Pryce of Conceit” is a fun and enjoyable cozy mystery that combines historical fiction, suspense, and humor. Kari Bovee’s adept storytelling and engaging writing style make this book a compelling read. Fans of driven heroines, atmospheric settings, and lighthearted twists and turns will find themselves eagerly awaiting the next installment in The Arabella Pryce historical cozy mystery series.

Author Kari Bovee is known for her historical cozy mysteries. I personally enjoy that these novels feature intelligent female characters who, although they must try to comply with the society of their time, still find a way to be deeply involved in solving the murder (or murders). This is the sixth book I have read and reviewed for this author, and I enjoyed it just as much as the others.

The Pryce of Conceit is the very first offering in Bovee's newest series featuring Arabella Pryce, an east coast celebrated actress whose rich husband just passed. To inherit, his will stipulates she must spend a year out in the wild west running a hotel he built there. Why? He thinks she is too attached to being adored by the public and wants her to experience life away from the stage.

From the moment she arrives, everything goes awry. The train is stopped by a rock slide. She decides to take a walk, only to fall in a wild river. After being rescued by the handsome town, she has enter town on the back of a horse looking terribly unpresentable. Dominos start to fall in rapid succession - it is hinted her husband had an affair and the young woman mentioned is killed shortly after. When Arabella has words with the manager about the sorry state of the hotel, he is murdered shortly after. Each time new evidence is found, it seems to point her way.

Slowly the case against her grows, and public opinion follows. Arabella works desperately to save her reputation by trying to figure out who the real murderer is. Her strongest allies? A resident ghost, her husband's venture partner who died the year before, and her companion Cordelia. All the while there is the growing electricity between herself and the handsome sheriff.

The Pryce of Conceit is a Fun Historical Mystery. I love the author's writing style--and the time period she has chosen for this novel. She does a beautiful job creating the world for her characters in the novel's Colorado Western setting. While it took some time for me to warm up to the main character, the author kept me engaged with a page-turner of a storyline and a well-built, well-paced mystery. I enjoyed the characters and their interactions. Since this is the first novel of a series, I hope to see more of them--even the ones I didn't necessarily love!

Readers Will Find a Light Mystery That Keeps Them Guessing. In cozy mystery fashion, the murders and surrounding mysteries are light and clean--but that doesn't make them necessarily obvious or easy to unravel. Again, the author's writing style makes the action and mystery-solving feel believable in their historical setting. There are even some romantic elements popping in along the way.

Would I Recommend The Pryce of Conceit by Kari Bovee? I enjoy Bovee's books. She does a wonderful job creating her characters for this novel and building a mystery that entertains through the last pages.

I look forward to future books in the series. This novel is a unique historical cozy mystery that both historical fiction fans and cozy mystery fans can enjoy. The ghost element makes a fun addition to this series opener too.

I received a copy of this book from the author or publisher for use in a blog review. All opinions are my own.

This is a solid start to a new series described as an “historical/ghost/cozy mystery,” which seems to be a new favorite type among mystery readers. The “history” here is 1885, a time when independent women were rare and the West was still relatively unknown. The “ghost” is the deceased partner of the main character’s late husband, and the “cozy” is evident in the absence of the more grisly aspects of murder.

It took me awhile to connect with the main character, Arabella Pryce, since she is the kind of person who typically irritates me – supremely self-centered and entirely focused on her “adoring public.” However, she soon emerges as a strong, sassy, and very smart woman who cares deeply about those closest to her. She navigates a completely unfamiliar landscape in Colorado – although not without some humorous mishaps – and most certainly rises to the challenge set for her by her late husband.

Bovee is clearly a skilled writer, delivering wonderful narrative descriptions of Colorado. I was especially drawn to her description of Arabella’s first sight of the aspens and the Colorado skyline as she steps off the train. Her characters are nicely drawn, especially Arabella’s progression from the vain, petulant diva to a caring, capable woman. The mystery is clever and will keep the reader guessing to the end.

This is a series I will follow and recommend. I hope the author delivers #2 soon. Recommended.

The Pryce of Conceit is a unique and entertaining read. I haven’t read many historical cozies, but it’s fun to dive into something knew and fresh, especially when it’s the first book in a series.

The 1800s Colorado hotel is a stimulating local to settle into, although for Arabella it’s a far cry from her celebrity lifestyle in theater she left in New York City. This change of life is a lot for her, especially while grieving her late husband. But the biggest adjustment is that rather than relishing the adoration of her fans, she must prove she isn’t a…murderer! Perhaps a mirror ghost, and her sweet friend Cordelia, can help her prove her innocence and solve the murders…

With elements of murder and ghosts, this cozy mystery is a quick read with pacing that builds, and an engaging amateur sleuth that profits remarkable growth.

The Pryce of Conceit by Kari Bovee is an engaging read. Arabella Pryce is a young preeminent actress in 1880's New York who has been recently widowed. She learns to her shock and dismay that a condition exists in her late husband's will that requires her to live in a remote hotel in Colorado for a year to inherit the estate, an estate that includes the theater she performs in. When a violent death occurs shortly after her arrival, Arabella finds suspicion is cast upon her for the deed. With the assistance of some new friends (one of which is a ghost), Arabella manages to clear her name and discover the true murderer.
I enjoyed following Arabella's plight and the methods she uses to clear her name. I found this to be a most engaging read and finished reading quickly.
I did receive an ARC from the author but this did not influence my opinion of her mystery novel. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Kari Bovee sure knows how to bring characters to life through words most so vibrant some a little into themselves most caring and of course it wouldn't be a mystery without the deadly schemer. They will draw you into their own stories as well as enticing you further through first the intrigue of an adventure of a young widows forced journeying across the country into a new life with her assistant in tow only to be accused of murder while making new friends and acquaintances. I was so enchanted with the array of characters and read late into the night so I wouldn't have to miss out on the journey of it all without interruption. All the clues, suspects and motives are so convincing but then once again a turning point would draw you into another direction. This historical cozey mystery with murder is so well written you really don't want to miss out. Acquire " The Pryce of Conceit " for hours of intriguing and enjoyable entertainment. Kat

What a whopper of a breezy engaging book this turned out to be - just what I would recommend. Bovee's writing is refreshingly good, and reminds one of PG Wodehouse style wry humour wherever the plot turns light and funny. With a complex plot forming a crux - given that Pryce not just has to deal with loss and trauma, but she also needs to learn to survive in an utterly new place that she has been forced to go to, learn to adapt to its dingy interiors, and above all, convince the community that she is not a murderer - all with just an old ghost for help. Cordelia and little Bijou add a lovely touch to the story. Bovee has spent quite some thought on the names of characters, and I loved every one of them.
I had a great time reading this book, and I cannot wait for the next one in the series.
My thanks to Bovee, the publishers Bosque Publishing, and Lauren of iRead BT, for gifting me with a copy of this book.

It's engaging and funny

This is not the first book that I had read from the author Ms. Karen Bovee. As usual, I enjoyed reading her books. This book is engaging and funny.

I laugh out loud so many times which is my favorite from reading this cozy mystery book. I can relate to some of the characters, especially Maggie. I am not a maid but some of her work in the hotel is mostly what I do at work. This girl is an asset to the hotel and I am glad that Mrs. Pryce takes good care of this employee.

Mothers will always strive for their kids particularly a daughter in this story to have the best in life. Unfortunately, mothers sometimes will not let their daughters decide what is best for them. Mrs. Pryce indeed plays a big role not only in owning the hotel but in the end being welcome to the community. Money is money but above all your reputation is more important than any amount of money.

Set in the late 1800s, this cozy mystery follows Arabella, a conceited, self-absorbed, newly-widowed actress, as she travels from New York City to Colorado to fulfill a rather odd requirement in her late husband's will. Unhappy about having to move to the West, she literally stumbles into her new hometown and almost immediately is accused of murdering a young local woman. With the help of some friends and, apparently, a local ghost, she's able to figure out who was actually behind the mounting murders. It was an interesting book. It almost reminded me of some of the classic movies set in the West where a high-fallutin' Easterner travels west and clashes with the locals but somehow manages with their help to transform into a better person, all while navigating lots of action, solving mysteries, and teasing out a possible romantic connection. Enjoyable!

Great read. I was drawn to the character straightaway and hooked from the first few chapters. Arabella has just lost her husband dear Walter , she stand to inherit everything but her husband on his deathbed decreed there be a claveat in the will. She’s too wanting of adoration from her fans and he wants her to live for herself and not the love of the theatre going public who will soon forget her when she retires. He stipulates she must stay in an Hotel named after her in the small town la plata springs for a year . She’s soon in the thick , charged with murder and soon turns amateur sleuth to clear her name and reputation

This is the first book in a new historical cozy mystery series. I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading more in the series. Arabella is a great character, an actress who is widowed young and must take over a hotel in the western US at a time when ladies with good reputations didn’t travel alone or do a lot of things she ends up having to do, in order to receive her full inheritance. When she is suspected of murder, she and her assistant, Cordelia, who is both sweet and resourceful, must solve the mystery, and there is no shortage of suspects. The writing is great and I was fully engrossed in the book. The historical details definitely feel authentic. I can definitely recommend this book and author; I received an arc, but these opinions are my own.

Excellent start to the series

Arabella Pryce, a widowed actress famed in London and New York City, finds out, in 1885 (in the days when a man still controlled his wife's money,) that everything she has is being held until she fulfills a condition of her late husband's will: that she must live for a year in the wilds of a small town in Colorado. He built a hotel there, you see, but she'd never seen it, having only lived in cities. Of course, since this is a mystery, she's implicated in crimes as soon as she reaches Colorado. The author has a knack for creating stories that keep the reader intrigued and guessing until the end. I stayed up until 3am reading it, because I just couldn't put it down. Highly recommended!

Very enjoyable! The year is 1885, and a famous, beloved entertainer is widowed. Her beloved husband leaves her a strange legacy - all his wealth, if she stays in a hotel in Colorado for one year. But before she reaches the destination with her companion and friend, she falls into a river and is rescued, and later is suspected of murder and sees a ghost in the hotel. How she manages this new situation in a "wild" part of the country makes for a very engaging story - and, there's a murder mystery or two to solve, and a handsome sheriff to contend with. I am looking forward to her further adventures!

La Plata Springs, Colorado is a beautiful place. You’ll read the author’s description and plan your trip. But ride along with Arabella because she can get there and you can’t.

Arabella doesn’t want to go, but her husband’s decision leaves no choice. To make matters worse, it’s not a ride you’d want. The greeting upon arrival is even worse. The author weaves a great story that will leave you wondering who the culprit(s) might be. The best part of the ride is Arabella weaving the clues together to solve the crime.

A good cozy mystery with a friendly ghost who isn’t Casper.

At first, especially in the prequel, I did not like Arabella much but she has grown on me in this book. She is losing a bit of her 'princess' attitude which was no doubt the intention of her older, much loved and deceased husband who insisted she spend a year in the back of beyond away from her adoring crowds before she would be entitled to her inheritance. The storyline was interesting and engaging, the characters well drawn and the twists satisfyingly misleading. I received this as an advance copy from the author and am leaving this review voluntarily

Arabella is quite dramatic

The concept of this murder is cute. Under the terms of her husband's will, Arabella must spend a year out west managing a hotel. The hotel is in a shambles, two more people die there and Arabella is accused. A ghost appears to help her solve the mystery. I found Arabella to be obnoxious and somewhat tedious. Book is ok but I did a lot of skimming to move it along.

Arabella Pryce not only is grieving the loss of her supportive husband but also forced to live in Colorado for a year to get her inheritance. At first she is unamused since it takes her from her acting vocation. However, once a dead body is found at the lodge she inherited, she has to investigate to clear her name. There are a number of twists and turns as she finds acceptance of her new circumstances. This can be read as a standalone. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

It's been a long time since I read something refreshing. I love historical fiction, but haven't ventured into historical mystery before. I loved this book and the characters. Their personalities came to life with Kari's words. The way she intertwined life with the mystery kept me turning the pages to see what happened next. I can't wait for the second book!!!!

Finished an ARC book by Kari Bovee. This is a second in the series of Arabella Pryce character. Great mystery book set in 1885 Colorado. It’s light hearted with the characters and even a ghost in her namesake hotel who keep you guessing who the murderer is in this western plot storyline. I think you’ll like this quick read with dashes of humor splashed in.

Yay!

This story held my attention throughout the story. The characters are fun. Mrs. Pryce stumbles over the clues. She is accidental prone. I wish that Cordelia had a bigger roll but all in all I will be reading more. I stayed up til 4am to finish it. It's rare these days for me to do that.
