To Protect and Serve

Rate this book
To protect or serve—a choice no detective should ever be forced to make.

Lieutenant Alex Troy is caught in the paradox of her life—to hold steadfast to her professional oath or to protect the woman she loves. Assigned to the Vice/Narcotics Division, Alex is given the dangerous but career-building mission of catching notorious and elusive drug lord Sonny Davis. She has to assemble the perfect team of officers to pursue the man suspected of killing numerous coeds—and a friend of Alex's—with the poison he peddles.

Keri Morgan is young, enthusiastic, and alive in ways that Alex can barely remember, and Keri has a reason of her own to want Sonny Davis dead. Before justice can be served, Alex and Keri are caught in a web of love, duty, vengeance, and desire that will change both their lives.

First novel by VK Powell. I'm sorry to say that it's one of the few books I didn't finish reading, or rather I skipped through the second half.

I couldn't connect with it at all, even though the story, roughly 2 cops connecting over an investigation trying to bust a drug lord, sounded like it was up my alley. I love tough cops. I'm easy that way. But something just didn't work for me here. The writing was mostly solid. There was some dialog, esp. in the love scenes, that sounded awkward and generic, and some oddly placed commas that someone should have caught, but that wasn't it. To me, the story itself felt very generic and lifeless. There was nothing original about it and no reason for me to like/dislike/engage with the characters. The characters had plenty of backstory that should have made them complex characters, but I just didn't see it.

There is something about cops that moves me.....or maybe the respect I have for them and what they do....and this story is beyond wonderful. It makes me happy when I can feel the emotions moving from characters just by reading the lines.....there is nothing better than a good book about police work.

A Case of Murder

Lt. Alex Troy was a by the book police officer and had just been assigned the case that would insure her Captains bars. Heading a task force to catch a notorious drug king pin and pin several deaths on the poison he traffics is not an easy assignment. Officer Keri Morgan is a young enthusiast officer who wants all in on the chance to catch the guy who is responsible for her best friends death. The energy between the Lieutenant and her officer is atomic and on a very short countdown. Strong characters and lots of action. Marvelous author.

Fun book with some sweet moments between the two main characters, but the plot was rather predictable and the villains rather cliched and underdeveloped.
