Piper Macintosh has always gone along with her aunt's crazy ideas. Eighty-Seven-year-old Hannah Macintosh Fry fancies herself a witch and a matchmaker. When she asks Piper to dig up some valerian root for a medicinal tea, Piper goes along with it even though it means trespassing on her neighbor's posted property.
Clate Jackson has just moved into his new home when he finds someone digging up his backyard. He's not happy about the situation and threatens to call the police if it happens again. Piper does not like her grouchy neighbor, but that doesn't stop her from going along with her aunt's next scheme. She wants Piper to look for buried treasure that is somewhere on Clate's property.
This romantic suspense story just did not work for me. I listened to the audiobook which was narrated by Amanda Dolan. She does a decent job with the characters. One problem was the heroine who just went along with whatever her aunt wanted her to do. The other (bigger) problem was the resolution to the story of the treasure. It was just dumb. My rating: 2 Stars.
Generally this would not be a book genre that I read books from but im so glad I decided to read it. It is a nice little break between the fantasy and the historical fiction books that I usually read.
The romance in this book was nicely done in my opinion. The sex and romance is realistic and not the main focus of the book and is written so the romance mixes nicely with the mystery/suspense side of the story.
If you like romance and you like the more tame kind of suspense stories that doesn't keep you up at night then I think you would like this book.
I was worried about her as an author because my Mom had read a novel from her Swift River valley Series and did not like it whatsoever. This book however had a good plot as well as just enough characters to keep it interesting and not lose track of the story line. This is not part of a series, it is one of her stand alone books. Based on this stand alone novel I would highly recommend Carla as a great Romantic suspense writer!
I long for writing that has the subtlety of the classics when it comes to romance. I feel like modern writers are competing to see how much detail they can give. Another author off my list. The plot was alright. Not something I would read again and again like the classic women writers. Still searching!
My second Carla Neggers book but I wasn't too impressed. Light elements of suspense mixed between a man with from a dysfunctional family and a woman with a great aunt dabbling in herbs and 'maybe' witchcraft. For some reason I thought this could have much better.
This was a nice romantic suspense title set on Cape Cod. Piper Macintosh was born there and is happy crafting, teaching classes, and dealing with her very old home. Her aunt Hannah who used to live next door has sold her house to Nashville entrepreneur Clate Jackson. He needed an escape from his high-pressure life in Nashville; Hannah was looking for the man of her great-niece's dreams.
Hannah is perfectly content living in her brand-new condo with electric plugs on every wall and making up her herbal concoctions. She thinks of herself as a sort of witch/herbalist. Folks around town are starting to think that she might be losing her mind, but her niece Piper is her staunch defender.
When Hannah tells Piper that she has just recalled some events from when she was seven and her parents died, Piper agrees to did for buried treasure under a wisteria. Only she has to trespass on her new neighbor's property to do so. Clate is not excited to have these interactions with his new neighbor, but gradually the two fall in love.
As they begin to unravel the secrets of Hannah's past, Piper finds herself in danger from someone who wants to find the treasure first. Clate and her own loving family are there to help her though Piper really prefers to hold on to her independence.
Hannah's secrets are not the only ones in the story. Clate's own past is a secret he has kept from everyone until he falls in love with Piper and decides he needs to confront his own past.
This was an engaging story with the right blend of suspense and romance. Amanda Dolan did a great job narrating it.
Just what I was looking for in a "beach" listen - a bit of tension, a bit of romance, a bit of mystery (and a bit predictable). Amanda Dolan did a fine performance with the various voices, especially the Cape Cod and thank you for the men sounding like men and not 15-year-old teenagers as do some female narrators.
New England, quirky great-aunt, match maker, reclusive tycoon, strong willed woman, family secrets - all combine for a real good read. Good narration too!
This was my first Carla Neggers book and I was just trying to get a taste for her style. This book has a TERRIBLE title that has nothing to do with the story, which was better and more engaging than I expected. I'd definitely read her again.
I did think this was a good book. In every book Carla Neggars come up with some insightful comment that I gives me something to think about. This was a simple story and happy ending...
