An amazing series of stories by a well experienced writer.
An amazingly interesting series of stories. I am a 95 year old retired professor (educational psychology --- Texas A&M University System) being treated by the East Texas Hospice group. My drug of choice is British mysteries and historical novels. I spend several hours daily reading them. P. C. James gives us the best of the best in the mystery genre. I think I am in love with Pauline!!! W. Floyd Elliott. wfelliott@msn.com
This is a nice set on entertaining mysteries. I read them all, but began to feel an antipathy toward Ms Riddell. You empathize with her in the early series, the loss of her fiancé, and her attempt to carve out a dual career in business and as an amateur detective. There was no continuity in her other characters, which would have been nice. The best books of this type are about more than just the central character. The interaction and growth of the individuals in the early books help involve the reader in the later books. Finally, I just grew tired of the prim, cantankerous Ms Riddell. She shows none of the humanity of a Miss Marple, none of the zest for life and interest in a variety of areas. It is all about the puzzle, which does hold your interest, but doesn’t let you enjoy the person.
This was a 10 book set. The stories were enjoyable and an easy read. I enjoyed reading them but don’t think I would recommend to read them all at once. A few of the stories got a bit long for me so if you read them take a break in between and you may enjoy them more.
Barely made it through book 3. The plots are interesting, but I couldn't stand "Miss Riddell." She's barely 21 years old, acts and thinks like a middle-age prude and highly prizes herself as a great sleuth. Nope.
This box set is a treat for readers like me who enjoy a good cozy mystery. Follow amateur sleuth Pauline Riddell through multiple challenging whodunnits, spanning several decades and major changes in her life.
I really enjoyed the diversity of situations and environments that face Pauline, including a haunted house in Australia, a frigid wintry setting in Northern Canada, and a cruise to the Galapagos Islands.
I love that author James doesn't portray Pauline as perfect. She makes mistakes and takes wrong turns in her investigations. But she invariably realizes her error and, sooner or later, comes to the correct conclusion. She's also brave and determined, never giving up, as the wonderful variety of well-written stories in this delightful box set attest.
I'm in Kindle Unlimited, so I especially appreciated that this box set has ten complete novels in one place. Perfect for readers like me who want to lose themselves in a good book, or lots of good books in this case.
I’ve followed P C James's Miss Riddell’s adventures over the years and enjoyed delving into her persistent, enquiring, prim, tweed self. I read the books out of order so it was a pleasure to visit them again in chronological order, from an introduction as a young woman in her first murder investigation and initial work with Inspector Ramsay (and plunge into the life of an unwed woman with a focus on career at a time when that was difficult for women) to her penchant to become involved in all forms of investigation that involved murder (and even kidnappings). Finally, the series finishes in a set of 'rather fun' adventures in her senior years after a chance encounter with a fellow sleuth. The settings range from post-war England through to Australia and Canada, and even the Galapagos Islands, with glimpses of insights into each of these settings. The series are great reads to curl up with on an evening – nothing heart-stopping to keep you awake but plenty to keep you turning the page just to find out what’s happening next.
Miss Riddell’s Cozy Mystery Adventures is a ten-book boxset that follows amateur sleuth, Pauline Riddell on many adventures. The series spans about 35 years, and several countries, making for an interesting read. With plenty of (historical) cozy mysteries, crime & investigation, intrigue, interesting characters, and dramatic developments- Miss Riddell is kept very busy, and takes us along for the ride. The Series Contains: -In the Beginning, There Was a Murder (Book #1) -Then There Were… Two Murders (Book #2) -The Past Never Dies (Book #3) -A Murder For Christmas (Book #4) -Miss Riddell and the Heiress (Book #5) -Miss Riddell and the Pet Thefts (Book #5.5) -Miss Riddell’s Paranormal Mystery (Book #6) -The Girl in the Gazebo (Book #7) -The Dead of Winter (Book #8) -It’s Murder, On a Galapagos Cruise (Book #9)
Enjoyable characters and compelling plots, safe yet thought provoking.
Miss Riddell became my friend during this series. I respect her and wish she was real. It was very interesting to witness her age through each book and become wise. The author includes some very limited social commentary that added to my enjoyment. I consider my time reading the series to have been educational as well as thoroughly entertaining.
Absolutely zero regrets reading all 10 of these books. I read 2 or 3, then took a break & read other books then came back & read 2 or 3 more, read other books then read 7 and ended up not being able to put the other 8 through 10 down and each one was better!!! Also, book #7, Miss Riddell's Paranormal Mystery, YOU MUST READ "A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR" which explains the book title!!!!!!
I've read every book in the series and they're all fabulous cozy mystery reads with an historical touch. Personally, I love the authentic feel of stories that place me in different parts of the globe and teach me something about history and geography. But James' books also fun to read. Because who doesn't like a good mystery?
Wonderful -Well developed characters - Interesting and intriguing plot lines The stories involve a stalwart heroine with an inquisitive mind who ferrets out the truth of a situation. The stories are delightful, entertaining and a definitely worthwhile read!
Love this boxset. It allowed me to read each story in order. I truly loved how the stories showed Miss Riddell matures through each story. It was fun yo read and try and figure out the guilty along with Pauline.
This collection was enjoyable to read. The author described each setting well, I thought it was more interesting have the stories take place in very different places. The characters were very well developed
I like the mystery parts and that Miss Riddell has a different way of viewing the scenes. I'm sorry she hasn't found a love interest. I had hoped she and the detective would hook up, and maybe in a other story I find them together. Great stories! Thank you.
Wanted to "create" a "new" Miss Maple. .... And I think that was accomplished. Highly recommend reading the entire 1st box set to see how a young girl "developes" in to Miss Riddell, a sleuth so like Miss Marple!
I thoroughly enjoyed the set of books. Each story was insightful and made me wanting to read the next. I would recommend it to anyone who like the mystery generas.
Solving puzzles not cases. Not a detective but sleuthing to aid police along a 30-year, international career in auditing. Always with an eye for justice.
I enjoyed these stories. I liked the journey through the years and the explanations as to how she knew who the murderer was. Also she was true to herself.
Read most of book 1. Got the whole series during an Amazon sell for like $5. I know why. This just wasn’t my cup of tea. Narrator was a little annoying to listen to.
