“Hi. It's Rebecca. From last night? The one who so brazenly spilt wine
on your jacket? Anyway… Um. Maybe I could take you out to dinner to
make up for it. Don’t worry; I’ll still pay for the dry-cleaning as
well. I may be the world’s most monstrously oafish person, but I’m no
cheapskate. Call me.”

Mark is single and has just started internet dating. Rebecca has
broken up with her long-term boyfriend and moved to a new city. When
they meet at a party, they discover they share a unique and magical
connection - their telephone line.

For when Rebecca calls Mark the next day, the message she leaves
inexplicably goes back in time three days.

And then things *really* start to get weird.

Disconnected - a comedy thriller with a twist of romance. And it's
about time too.

Starts out amiable, gets melodramatic, ends satisfying. I really appreciated that the Time Travel structure was explained coherently & (as much as possible) plausibly. Just a fun, funny, adventurous read that I found hard to put down. I'd love to try something else by the author, too. Recommended.

When I read the summary of this book, I was a little worried that it would be a romance which is certainly not my cup of tea. However, it was far from it. While there is a love story involved, this is much more of an action/comedy with a side of time travel.

Being a former internet dater myself, I immediately identified with the main character who starts off in Chapter One with experiencing some of the pitfalls of online relationships. While the author incorporated several cultural references through the story, I recognized each one. So instead of alienating me, it drew me into the story even more.

The comedy was great, and the action was just enough to keep it interesting without being overdone. The language and overly-descriptive sex scene later in the book was a little bit of a turn off for me, and resulted in the loss of one star in my overall rating. However, it didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of this book.

I came across this book through the authors' self promotion in our time travel group read. I am always willing to try out new authors books if the synopsis sounds good and if the Kindle sample gets me hooked. Well the synopsis alone grabbed me and the sample hooked me in like a blackhole for this was a highly entertaining time travel romantic black comedy thriller. The author has an almost Terry Pratchett style of humour in his narrative but fully grounded in our world, rather than a giant turtle's back. Both dialogue and narrative were full of wry humour which evolved into rather dark humour towards the thrilling end. It had me laughing and chuckling throughout at the dialogue, witty banters and the increasingly bizarre situations the characters find themselves in.

It did however, take its time to get into its thriller phase, in fact quite a long way into the book. But once it did, it became a frenetic thrill ride towards the enevitable end that we already got a preview of in the book's prologue.

The book has distinctly 3 acts. The first 2 acts overlap as we get the exposition of 4 main characters, funny and awkward romantic developments followed by the discovery of time travel. Then we get the thriller in the final 3rd and perhaps shortest act. The pace however was always in high gears from very early on shifting into full throttle towards the finale.

The main plot device and driving narrative is the time travel element and as a time travel fan, it doesnt dissapoint. The time travel rules set out here are quite novel and more importantly consistentently implemented. Its actually the best time travel story Ive read that doesnt involve anyone physically time travelling. I wont dwell too much on specifics as I am not one for giving any story plots away but it is clever without being overly ambitious and complicated, making it all easy to follow.

There are some sex scenes in the book. Not something I crave for in a book but these were narrated with some hliarious moments albeit a tad explicit.

The dialogue and banters are very witty. Sometimes its a little over done with sarcasm and the thought processes of some of the characters are rather unpc at times but I'll hasten to add that this highlights the naivity of some of the characters, not the narrative. Besides, I cant ever hold my hand up declaring my mind is devoid of unpc thoughts at times. I'm ashamed of those thoughts but its human nature, I am sure I am not the only one, am I?

The main characters are sufficiently fleshed out for us to care about them, despite their plentiful flaws. We dont get superflous background details on them, just an essence which I think is good tight editing to maintain the pace.

This wont exercise any intellectual or deep thought provoking analysis. This is an unabashedly high concept popcorn entertainment reading which I highly recommend.

I started out really liking this book. The characters had this great, witty, banter thing going on, and it was really cute. Then the turmoil & churn part of the story kicked in and I just wasn't feeling it as much. But, the ending had me on the edge of my seat, so to speak, and that's always good :)

To see my full review:

I am so sorry to say that this novel isn’t for me. Personally, I had too many issues with the novel to enjoy it in the least, though I do think the premise is there for a truly great read. Going in, I was excited as I liked the synopsis and the idea that Mark’s phone created a sort of time-travel experience, but upon reading, I found that I didn’t care for either of the main leads. While the beginning started off okay, I soon found that the interactions between the characters, especially Mark and Rebecca, seemed a bit unrealistic and juvenile. Both have an obsession with sex, and for me, romance isn’t based on sexual attraction or physical release, so I didn’t see the romance aspect of the novel at all. The sections were also quite choppy, jumping from one scene to the next without really setting the scene or the background to serve the characters and their situations justice, in my eyes. And, as a teacher myself, I really had an issue with the fact that Rebecca talked about her relationship issues with her students. That’s a huge no-no, and it turned me off immediately. Truth be told, I think this novel has a lot of potential, and the ending was quite interesting, but I didn’t like the characters enough, or their plight, to really enjoy the novel at all. Personal preferences, I guess.

"Love at first sight is so much easier when time moves in the right direction"
Rebecca has just met Mark, and thinks he might be her ideal man. He's funny. He's smart. He has a time wormhole in his telephone that gives them access to unimaginable wealth. These all qualify as 'PROS'.
But there's also the possibility that he may be destined to murder her. Which, by any standard, is one for the 'CONS' column."

A truly engaging and involving tale- A.K. Adler has taken the tradional romance tale and with superb writing and characterizations, transformed it into a story chock full of twists, thrills and wit.

Key to the success of DISCONNECTED, and it is a successful novel is the expert portayals of the lead characters, Rebecca and Mark. Both are quite finely rendered, and the reader is able to see each evolve over the course of the novel. Characters that are stagnant are not one's who compel the reader to invest much interest- this is certainly not the case here. Both Rebecca and Mark each have their individual personalities, and complexities..and this is a testament to the excellent writing abilities of A.K. Adler!

This is an interesting study about human interaction … at least the way I saw it. I’m not sure that was the intention of the author. I spent a lot of my time while reading this trying to figure out where it was all heading. Once I realized that it wasn’t just a story but a study I was able to better understand what I was reading.

I had trouble following this story and found myself having to go back to catch pieces I missed. That was when I thought it was just a story, however. There is much written between the lines in this book and it is more of a novel to study than to just read. It’s not typically the type of book I enjoy.

It was well written and the characters were easily understood but to my way of thinking there was too much left unsaid. I need to be led when I’m reading and I feel like I missed something in this novel. But don’t take my word for it; read it for yourself and let me know.

This is a fun popcorn romp and a good way to start my summer. Mark a single guy a bit on the shallow side, ok a lot on the shallow side. I felt as if this entire book would be more fun acted out on stage. It involved a small amount of core characters and some very funny and fast paced dialogue. The mayhem that ensues seems suited for a comedy farce... Highly entertaining and as a reader I did not agree with a lot of the decisions the characters made but it was very fun to see the results of their crazy decisions and mistakes.

A very fast paced comedy...Stupid people exploiting time travel for their own gain and not contemplating the consequences of their actions.

Some very rated R sex scenes.

The author was kind enough to furnish me with a coupon for this book. I have to say I put off reading it because the blurb sounded a little too science fiction-y for my taste. I'm not a big fan of the genre. That being said, I started the book and was immediately caught up in the story - it was nothing like what I expected! The story is well written, impossible to put down and had a great/weird ending. I definitely recommend it!

I really loved this. In fact I was surprised how much I enjoyed it as I'm not usually a big sci-fi reader. I loved the concept - it's simple yet so very clever - and the mix of science and personal interactions made it very readable. I also found it to be a real page-turner and every night I looked forward to picking it up - a sure sign of a great book for me. I would definitely read more of A.K.Adker's stuff.

Some weak spots but overall a quick and refreshing book. Don't expect the characters to be too deep or even genuine. It's pure entertainment.
