While serving in Pakistan Army, he wrote his first book Bajung Aamad (Urdu: بجنگ آمد) which is a humorous account of his life in Iraq, Libya and Egypt as a soldier during World War II. This book became extremely popular and earned him critically acclaimed prominence among Urdu humorists. He is considered one of the most influential authors of this genre.

War and humour is an unlikely mix,but Colonel Mohammad Khan makes it work,brilliantly.Forget the grimness of the Second World War,there is plenty to smile about in this classic of Urdu humour.
He makes it sound as if he were on a picnic. The war took him to Iraq,Egypt,Burma and the African desert. Soldiers were living it up,not knowing if the next day would be their last.Mohammad Khan's descriptions of those days are colourful.
His writing style resembles that of Patras Bukhari. He wrote a few more books,but Bajang Amad,was a hard act to follow.
I'm glad I was introduced to this book in school.For once,the syllabus makers got something right.

This book showcases the best of Urdu literature; a soldier's life. The humor by Colonel Khan is so apt; presenting the tough army life, academy days, postings in difficult areas, every part of it is described with a style and amazing sense of humor. The author joined Army in 1940s, when WW2 was on, so he had the chance of serving in the war indifferent countries. He has described his experiences with wit, and a good amount of Urdu poetry. There is much to learn about the last days of the British Raj over the Indian subcontinent through this book. If you’re looking to enjoy an Urdu book that has wit, laughs and depth, this is the right book for you!

I read this book a few years ago. It was one of the best I have ever read in Urdu humor, which I generally admire very much. As far as I can remeber I read it at least two and may be three times.Its an auto-biography of an army officer. Its always enjoyable and inspiring to read about Pakistan army. The ragging they have to face and how they manage to laugh at the most difficult of times, not to mention making others like myself laugh with them, is incredible.
This book reminds me of the famous Pakistani dramas Alpha Bravo Charlie and Sunahre Din. And that is another reason I like it so much.

A very interesting book, some how I have ignored this book for some un known reasons but after reading it I found out what I was missing at.
This memoir by Col Muhammad Khan is an account of his days spend in Middle East (IRAQ & EGYPT) during second world war; however instead of making it a dull narration of events he has opted for humor as the vehicle for delivering the message . The whole book contains a very entertaining and amusing narration of events that fell on the author while serving with the British Army, one cannot feel bored at any point in the book and this is no small thing .
One should not take this piece of work merely as a memoir written in humorous style but a study into life/culture of a particular era and place, human psychology is at display vividly which is a hallmark of a good story telling. Interestingly I have also gone thru "DAJLA" by Dr. Shafiq Ur Rehman which is exactly placed in same era and place; that too is an account of his stay there but for un known reason Shafiq Ur Rehman has opted for serious style of narration which made that work quiet dull; had he opted for his typical humorous way this could have been a master piece.
I as a layman feels that Col Khan is influenced by the writings of Patras and Shoukat Thanvi which is quiet evident in his writing style specially his "self -humiliation" which is very amusing. One aspect that is some how dampens the otherwise interesting account is the use of a difficult Urdu which might be a common thing in 60's but to a reader living in 21st century is bit heavy, interestingly neither Patras nor Shoukat Thanvi has used heavy language in their essays although they have completed their work much earlier then "Bajang Amad".
To summarize it :Its a must read.

سید ضمیر جعفری صاحب نے اس کتاب کے بارے میں لکھا ہے کہ کرنل صاحب کا لطیف اور لچکیلا مزاح ان کے اسلوب تحریر کا جزو ہے، ان کے نقطہ نظر کی پیدوار ہے۔ ان کی ظرافت کسی دلآویز خیابان میں ہنستی، مسکراتی،گنگناتی ہوئ ندی کی طرح بہتی ہوئ چلی جاتی ہے اور اپنے بہاؤکے طلسم میں کناروں کو بھی اپنے ساتھ بہا کر لے جاتی ہے۔

Pulled an all-nighter for this one, and totally worth it :D Col. Muhammad Khan belongs to my district of domicile and I can really REALLY relate to his style of humor so it was double the fun for me. BEAUTIFUL COMEDY :')

اس یادداشت میں کرنل محمد خان دوسری جنگ عظیم کے دوران مشرق وسطیٰ (عراق اور مصر) میں اپنے تجربات بیان کرتے ہیں۔ واقعات کی خشک تکرار فراہم کرنے کے بجائے، وہ اپنی کہانی کو بیان کرنے کے لیے مزاح کا استعمال کرتا ہے۔
پوری کتاب ان واقعات کی دل لگی اور دل لگی تفصیل سے بھری ہوئی ہے جن کا سامنا اس نے برطانوی فوج میں خدمات انجام دیتے ہوئے کیا، اس بات کو یقینی بناتا ہے کہ قارئین مصروف رہیں اور کبھی بور نہ ہوں۔ یہ کافی کامیابی ہے۔
پوری کتاب ان واقعات کی دل لگی اور دل لگی تفصیل سے بھری ہوئی ہے جن کا سامنا اس نے برطانوی فوج میں خدمات انجام دیتے ہوئے کیا، اس بات کو یقینی بناتا ہے کہ قارئین مصروف رہیں اور کبھی بور نہ ہوں۔ یہ کافی کامیابی ہے۔

Even though I am a huge fan of Urdu literature, I will admit I don't read it as much as I would like to, because, well, at my age (I'm 15) I don't have the time for long classics or the mental clarity for appreciating some of them. For this reason, I resorted to the shorter, easier, and wittier of them. This book was a really good choice, and as both an Army Brat and the granddaughter of a war veteran this book was bound to be my favorite.
It brings forward the army life of the past (another one of my interests) and relates them in a way, that anyone who has known an army officer, feels like they are talking about their own experiences.(Trust me, all the PMA drills have been drilled into me by my father, in a way not different from the narrator here) His gentle humor, which is written in a way so beautifully that it feels like peeling off a gift wrapper, each layer invokes more pleasure than the last. Then his descriptions are not lengthy, but not dry either, and the book is such that even the busiest of readers (which I was when I started it) can not only read it (and fast) but read it well and enjoy every part of it. Would re-read it anytime and anywhere.

Interesting book by Col. Muhammad Khan. A comedy book of Urdu literature, based on his experience in military life that reader can't go through it without a lot of laugh.

How do you review a masterpiece? read this for the 2nd time and it feels as if this is a totally different book. The language is beautifully used, the laughs come easily and regularly. Col. M khan wrote a gem of book which needs to be read with full attention and active imagination.

کرنل محمد خان سے پہلی بار میٹرک کی نصابی کتب میں آشنائی ہوئی اور تبھی سے ان کے نام کے ساتھ ایک دلی وابستگی ہے۔
کرنل محمد خان چکوال کے گاؤں بلکسر میں 1910ء میں پیدا ہوئے اور آپ نے میٹرک کی تعلیم حاصل کرنے کے بعد کالج کی تعلیم حاصل کرنے کی غرض سے اسلامیہ کالج لاہور میں داخلہ لے لیا ، ابھی آپ کی تعلیم مکمل نہیں ہوئی تھی کہ جنگ عظیم دوم کا آغاز ہو گیا ، آپ نے برطانوی فوج میں ملازمت کے لیے درخواست دی اور نیم لفٹین مقرر کیے گئے ۔ آپ نے مصر ، قاہرہ ، فلسطین اور مغربی صحرا میں سگنل آفیسر کے طور پر خدمات انجام دیں وہیں سے آپ کی ترقی کا آغاز ہوا ، جب آپ وطن واپس لوٹے تو آپ کو کیپٹن کا عہدہ دیا گیا اس کے بعد آپ کو برطانوی فوج میں ہی میجر کے عہدے پر ترقی دی گئی تھی۔
مصنف کا تعارف اس لیے بھی ضروری تھا کہ جو لوگ ان سے آشنا نہیں وہ بھی ان کی ادبی و عسکری خدمات سے بہرہ ور ہوں۔
بجنگ آمد کی تصنیف ایک خوشگوار حادثہ تھا اور وہ اس طرح کے فوج کے ماہنامہ جریدے کے لیے مضامین درکار تھے اور ایڈیٹر صاحب کی نظر انتخاب نے محمد خان کو منتخب کیا ، انہوں نے ٹال مٹول کی کوشش تو بہت کی لیکن ایڈیٹر صاحب نہ مانے۔ بادلِ ناخواستہ انہیں لکھنا پڑھا اور ان کا لکھا گیا مضمون جو کہ ان کی فوج میں تقرری کے بارے میں تھا ، چھپا تو کافی پسند کیا گیا ۔
آئیندہ ماہ جب دوبارا جریدے کی اشاعت کے لیے مضامین درکار تھے تو ایڈیٹر صاحب نے پھر ان سے کہا کہ آپ ایک اور مضمون لکھیں اور یہیں سے کرنل محمد خان کی ادبی زندگی کا آغاز ہوتا ہے ، انہوں نے بجنگ آمد میں اپنے پہلے مضمون کو پہلے باب کی صورت میں ترتیب دی اور اپنی برطانوی فوج میں خدمات کو ایک کتاب اور خود نوشت کی صورت عطا کی۔
کرنل محمد خان کا اسلوب بیان نہایت عمدہ ہے اور ان کے الفاظ کا چناؤ بہت ہی خوب صورت ہے ، علمی لحاظ سے ان کے ہاں ہمیں بارہا ایسے الفاظ نظر آتے ہیں کہ لغت کے بنا کوئی چارہ نہیں ہوتا جس سے ان کے تبحُّرِ علمی کا اندازہ ہوتا ہے۔ کرنل صاحب کی تحریر سے ان کی صداقت پر یقین کامل ہوتا ہے کہ انہوں نے جو کچھ بھی دیکھا محسوس کیا یا تجربہ کیا اسے مناسب شکل میں پیش کیا ، معترضین یہ اعتراض کرتے ہیں کہ ان کے ہاں خوب صورت عورتوں کا فقدان نہیں تو عرض ہے کہ جب آپ جنگ کے میدان میں ہوں گھر والوں سے ، ملک سے ، تہذیب سے دور جہاں پہ صرف مارنا یا جان بچانا ہی واحد راستہ ہو تو وہاں پہ اگر آپ کو کوئی خوب صورت عورت نظر آ بھی جائے تو وہ احساس ایک نعمت سے کم نہیں اور اس احساس کو سمجھنے کے لیے آپ پہ لازم ہے کہ بجنگ آمد کا مطالعہ کیجیے اور اردو ادب کی ایسی تصینف جو کہ زندہ ادب میں شمار ہوتی ہے ، اس سے حظ اُٹھائیں۔
بجنگ آمد کو اشاعت کے بعد ادبی حلقوں میں کافی پذیرائی ملی اور کرنل محمد خان نے اردو مزاح نگاری میں ایک اہم مقام حاصل کر لیا ۔ مشتاق احمد یوسفی ، شفیق الرحمٰن اور سید ضمیر جعفری آپ کے ہم عصر تھے۔
آپ کی دوسری تصانیف میں بسلامت روی ، بزم آرائیاں اور بدیسی مزاح شامل ہیں
آپ نے 23 اکتوبر 1999ء داعئ اجل کو لبیک کہا ۔ اردو ادب کے تابندہ ستاروں میں آپ ہمیشہ چمکتے رہیں گے___

This is a story of a young boy from a village near Chakwal, Pakistan who wanted to join the British Indian Army around 1940s. Muhammad Khan finished his schooling and joined the army and soon became an officer. His journey where he participated in frontier wars and the World War 2 is filled with tales of hardship of wars and fun filled events.
His adventures began when he was posted to the tribal areas where he first tasted warfare.
It was the period of WW2 and as the subject of the British Empire, he was sent off to fight their war in the Middle east and Northern Africa, as a signals officer. There he traveled and met people from cities where many people in sub-continent only hoped to go. He traversed across Iraq, Palestine, through the Suez Canal into Egypt and Libya. He encountered Italian and German forces. His battalion fared pretty well against the Italians, however had to flee from the Germans while losing half of his men. After battling them he was transferred to Burmese front where he took part in rebuilding and rehabilitating Burma after the Japanese were pushed out of there.
Eventually he returned to eastern British-India until Pakistan was created.

ایک گبرو جوان محمد خان کو جنگ عظیم دوم کی ابتدا میں شوق چڑھا کہ چلیں جی برطانوی فوج میں افسر بنتے ہیں ۔ افسرانا رعب داب اور ٹھاٹ باٹ کے سپنے لیکر ٹریننگ کے لئے پہنچتے ہیں ۔ تربیت کے بعد اس نوجوان افسر کی تعیناتی پشاور اور وہاں سے وزیرستان کر دی جاتی ہے جہاں برطانوی فوج فقیر ایپی کے ساتھ برسر پیکار ہیں۔ وزیرستان سے انہیں بلا کر سمندر پار جانے کی نوید دے دی جاتی ہے جہاں جنگ عظیم دوم اپنے پر پھیلا رہی ہے اور انہیں جرمن اور اتحادی افواج کے ساتھ دو دو ہاتھ کرنے عراق بھیج دیا جاتا ہے۔ وہاں اور اس کے بعد کے کچھ سالوں میں مختلف جگہوں پہ تعیناتی کے دوران دلچسپ واقعات کا بیان ہے یہ کتاب

ادب میں مزاح لکھنا انتہائی مشکل امر ہے۔ اپنی تحریر کے ذریعے کسی کے لبوں پہ تبسم یا مسکان لے آنا کوئی آسان کام نہیں۔ کرنل صاحب فوج کے خشک اور بظاہر بورنگ شب و روز کو اتنے دلچسپ اور رنگین انداز میں بیان کرتے ہیں کہ بے اختیار مُسکا اٹھتے ہیں۔ وزیرستان میں لڑائی کا احوال ہو ، بصرہ بغداد یا مختلف جگہوں پہ ہونے والے مختلف واقعات کا بیان ہو یا جرمن یا اطالوی فوجوں کے ساتھ مڈ بھیڑ کے امکانات کا بیان اتنے پر مزاح انداز میں بیان کرتے ہیں کہ بس کیا کہنے۔ اتنا لطیف مزاح پڑھنے کا کم از کم مجھے تو کوئی اور تجربہ نہیں ہوا

شستہ اردو زبان میں سنجیدہ علمی و ادبی کتابیں تو میں نے بہت پڑھی ہیں مگر اس قدر شستہ و رفتہ اردو میں پرمزاح کتاب پڑھنے کا یہ میرا پہلا تجربہ تھا۔ خوبصورت ترکیبات سے آراستہ اقتباسات، تشبیہات و استعارات کی مرصع کاری سے مزین پرمزاح جملے، محاورات و اشعار کا برمحل اور برجستہ بین السطور استعمال اس کتاب کے مزاح کو چار چاند لگا دیتا ہے۔
بجنگ آمد" جیسا کہ نام سے ظاہر ہے کرنل محمد خاں کی جنگ عظیم دوم کے آغاز پر برٹش فوج میں شمولیت اور پھر جنگ کے دوران مختلف مقامات پر نیم لفٹینی کے عالم میں ان کی فوجی خدمات کا پرمزاح بیان ہے۔ شستہ زبان اور شگفتہ انداز بیان پڑھنے والے کے دل و دماغ کو گل و گلزار بنا دیتے ہے۔ انگریز و دیسی فوجی افسران کا مزاجاً اور فوجی خدمات کے سلسلے میں چٹکلے آمیز موازنہ قاری کو دوران مطالعہ ایک مسلسل طرب و نشاط کے کیفیت میں مبتلا رکھتا ہے، جہاں مسکراہٹ سے قہقہے اور قہقہے سے مسکراہٹ کا بومیرنگ چلتا رہتا ہے۔
اس کتاب کو اگر مختصر سفرنامہ بھی کہا جائے تو بے جا نہ ہوگا کیونکہ ہٹلر سے بالمشافہ ملاقات کے لیے خان صاحب جن جن ملکوں اور علاقوں میں فروکش ہوئے، ان کی تہذیب و ثقافت اجمالاً اور وہاں کے باسیوں خصوصا" صنف نازک کے اخلاق و خصائل پر انہوں نے تفصیلاً روشنی ڈالی ہے۔ عام طور پر تو لوگ جہاں جاتے ہیں وہاں داستان چھوڑ آتے ہیں۔ مگر ہمارے خاں صاحب دوران جنگ سمندر و صحرا اور بغداد و قاہرہ کی داستانیں سینے میں سمیٹے جب وطن لوٹے تو ان گل و گلزار داستانوں کو لطیف مزاح کا پیرہن دے کر بجنگ آمد کے نام سے قلم بند کر کے سرمایۂ اردو ادب میں ایک اور گراں قدر کتاب کا اضافہ کر دیا۔

Since long I wanted to read this book but could not muster my choosy taste of humor ( hooked on Yusufi's humor) to start it. Some week ago I bought the set of his four books and now after reading this book I regret my procrastination in reading this joyous romp of a book. Though a memoir of an army officer, the book is steeped in a very subtle humor where every sentence is suffused with deep and mature literary taste. The writer seamlessly and effortlessly weaves his sentences with tasteful allusions of Urdu and Persian poetry in a very funny way. Replete with zestful anecdotes from his army life, the book is abuzz with life. The book is studded with interesting, scintillating characters who leave indelible marks on the reader's mind. The amorous escapades of the women-starved soldiers during their campaigns in Iraq, Egypt and Burma make the book sparkle with verve and zest.

The writing style? Pure gold. It’s like Patras Bukhari and Shoukat Thanvi had a literary love child, and it’s Colonel Muhammad Khan. His use of Urdu poetry adds a layer of richness to the narrative, making it not just funny but also deeply poetic. Sure, the language can be a bit heavy at times (hello, 1960s Urdu!), but honestly, it just adds to the charm. It’s like savoring a rich, decadent dessert—you might need a moment to process it, but it’s worth every bite.
