It’s a swing and a FLY BALL! … Deep into center field!
BUT….Since the opposing team had moved all their players to the infield anticipating a bunt, there was no one to catch it… and so the story will continue! This baseball analogy has absolutely nothing to do with the story, whatsoever, but it pooped into my mind so I used it. (that’s not a typo, btw, had it been a GOOD analogy that actually fit the book, I would have said “popped into my mind,” but alas….)
I gave it all 5 stars so it’s OBVIOUS that I liked it, and I won’t bore you with all the reasons why. Instead I’m going to turn to that secret little section of the book, which isn’t so secret really, called “Author’s Notes.” These are often just as much fun, and sometimes even more fun, than the book itself and it has forced me into reading them, now, before I write a review.
First, from Book 3 and the concept of “The Walking Tagline,” to Sarah I have only two words to say, and may I recommend these for Elvis rather than his love of fries…? I hope you’ve already figured this one out, Sarah, and all of her fans will immediately recognize what could arguably be the best tagline EVER for a Chinese Dragon / Chimera: “CHOP! CHOP!” I rest my case.
Secondly, following Sarah’s confession in these notes I feel horrible but vindicated. I’ve made no secret in my reviews that while I loved the characters and story in Paris’ two series, I was deeply disappointed by the writing. It just lacked the real “Sarah-ness” (Mike you have to do SOMEthing with that phrase… please, oh please) that I had come to love. The second was better than the first, but still not great. And then I have been totally WOW-ed by her writing in this series once more. Lo and behold, she was cranking those books out in a reduced time frame, super tight on the first series, and only tight on the second, while this series has nothing tying it down. Hmmm… a key rule in scientific research is that correlation is not causation, but methinks I see a connection here. ***Tom sticks his tongue out at Sarah***
The funny thing is, while I write technical documents and training materials, I usually produce a 5-10 week project in the final 3-7 days. I’m “working” on it the entire time, but 90%, just like Sarah, gets done at the last minute. I found that when I SHORTENED the total time for a project, the quality suffered or I actually missed the deadline, because my unconscious mind needed that time to compose what I would eventually transcribe. I think that the same must be true of Sarah. Because she has an AWESOME gift, but apparently it cannot be rushed. So…. CHOP! CHOP! Grab your child, hop a plane to Scotland and don’t come back without your husband. You deserve all the Joy and Love your tiny little ninja heart can hold!
Btw: Mike totally dodged IKEA, may I suggest you try hitting him with O’Sullivan furniture next time? It’s heavier and MIGHT be Scottish…
Once again, Sarah Noffke's books have taken me far away from reality - as I know it - and slam dunked me straight into the world of the Beaufont family!
Rose Beaufont, and her sidekick, the Chimera, Elvis, are still having trouble catching the Shadow Walker Witches, who are doing their best to destroy the House of Fourteen, and everything that they represent.
But when Paul, who runs the Great Library, is kidnapped, & the evidence leads to the Shadow Walker Coven, Rose knows that she has little time to rescue Paul, before he's killed.
When they overhear a conversation, that makes them realise the Coven is after a book that could bring down the House of Fourteen, the race is on, to both try and stop the Coven succeeding, and to rescue Paul, before they have no use for him.
This book is fast paced, and full of last minute miracles. Rose, as is usual with the Beaufonts, had to jump through many hoops, in order to get the help that she needs to try and stop the Witches.
One of the loveliest parts, was when her Cousin, Paris, aka: St. Valentine, takes her to a Vegas wedding, to witness a very special couple getting married there.
She explains to Rose, how Soulmates, marrying, created a powerful boost to the Love Meter, and that this was vital right now, due to the negativity of the Shadow Walker Coven's interference!
I have to confess to a few tears, here, as it was beautifully written, by an author who has just married her own Soulmate! ❤️
There was purpose to this, though, & I loved how it was all mixed in with the plot!
Once again, I've thoroughly enjoyed another book in this great series - & I've even warmed to Elvis, which made a huge difference to how I read his wisecracks! Lol
I can't wait to read the next book in the series: Black Magic Market, but that won't be released until the 14th July, this year, unfortunately so, in between then, I have a huge To Be Read pile to tackle!
One of my other favourite series: Delta Underground Operatives, has another book being released on the 16th of this month - just 3 days to go - and that will be Puppet Master: Nyc & Stel, written by Mel Todd - but I've got those 3 days to get through first, so I'm going to start on a whole series of books that I've been wanting to read since I finished the Kurtherian Gambit Series.
This is the ZOO series, & they've been waiting three years for me to read them, so I guess now's the time! Lol
I'm going to be reading this chronologically, so the first series within this, is: Apocalypse Paused, by Michael Todd, with Book One being: Fight for Life and Death!
So, I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know if I enjoy this, or not!
That chimera. . .Elvis becomes increasingly more obnoxious, very NOT funny...
From the authors' notes, I deduced that Sarah Noffke is, in large part, responsible for writing Elvis's dialogue, translation: lame, extremely over-indulged blurting whatever pops into his head with absolutely no concern for discretion, manners, or respect for his demi-god, half-magician Mortal Seven. I spend more effort avoiding the parts Rose indulges him in "conversation," which usually becomes littered with disparaging insults about her looks, hair, or intelligence. This adds up to me skipping about an eighth of the book.
I don't want to dislike Elvis; however, insults are what leaves his big mouth disguised as jokes, which, to someone who grew up fielding unkind comments, vitriol, and petty jealousy under the cover of cruel, unfunny jokes from classmates and other students or folks of my generation, he brings back the hurt, embarrassment, and misery that I experienced. So, I'm not gonna read anymore of this series or purchase any Sarah Noffke books, no matter how much I love Michael Anderle's writing. He writes so much on his own and with other authors I DO find funny, so I'm okay with it. Apologies, Michael -- I actually can discern your technique from hers -- as stated, I mean no disrespect, and just have an aversion to this one aspect of this series, which has strong potential. Y'all average four-plus ratings, so a goodly number of people like to read putdowns and consistent insults/attacks to a young woman's looks and intelligence, or lack thereof.
Solid writing otherwise. The ideas are awesome - some "supporting" details missed their mark. Two and a half stars.
The characters and storylines in this series are ok, definitely in the main stream of this genre; but I am bored with the writing—too much exposition of the situation, the protagonist’s thoughts and worries and choices, not enough dialogue and action. And then the same thoughts, concerns and situations are rehashed a few pages later.
Partly, it’s me; I read so much that I am over-saturated—especially with the conventions of this genre. I really need to branch out and enrich my life and reading with other things. So I apologize if this is just the unfortunate book upon which I foundered. But I am frustrated with how poorly many fantasy authors write. These two authors do well enough with diction and grammar, and as noted the story line is ok; I’d just like them to tighten it up. But new ideas, great characters that grow, carefully crafted writing, and delight in language never grow old.
this was actually a different series when you asked about names for a villian . use baby names or a country and meaning, say female scotland and meaning you can add something like rogue or leave it open to get a better meaning for a name. i always get frustrated wen I get half way trough a series then have to wait 2 months for the next one to come out.
I have to give a shout out to Martha Carr. I started with Dragons Gap then started this UNIVERSE where I bounced around using author notes to where to go next. By now I have 80% of the books read. I think the Brownstone 22 book series was a little long, 12-15 may have been better. Thanks for you excellent writing. Can't wait wait to mid September.
The clock is ticking as Rose continues on her journey to take down the Shadow Walker Coven before they can take down the House of Fourteen. In this latest addition, the great librarian has been kidnapped by the witches in a dastardly plot to defeat the magicians and It’s down to Rose and Elvis to try and save him and stop this evil plan. It’s one hell of a journey for Rose, filled with action, drama, magic, revelations, betrayal and it had me in its clutches from start to finish. So so good!
The House of Fourteen is heading for the darkest of days! Shadow Coven members are getting more ruthless and affecting every aspect of humanity. Our newly found Beaufont with her sassy Chimera are learning how to battle them.
As Rose gains in experience, so does the momentual task ahead of her as the entire House of Fourteen faces what could be their downfall. A few more pieces of the puzzle are hinted at and the typical Noffke style is in full force giving usba great story and fascinating read.
Rose and Elvis are trying to track down the kidnapped librarian, and also stop the witches from getting their hands on some forbidden books that could help take down the magicians. I really enjoy these Beaufont series, they have lots of humor, action and great characters and I always have a hard time putting them down.
Congratulations to Sarah Noffke and Michael Anderle for this amazing series. It’s extremely hard to find such interesting and exciting authors who not only write intelligently but also provide top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories. I’m really looking forward to the next book.
Rose finally has.her Great Aunts book but read it because the witches spelled it. ASo she goes to the Great Library hoping the librarian can read it.but he's been kidnapped by the witches. She must save.him and find the person who let them In the Great Library. The adventure begins.
Twisted Witchcraft(The Uncountable Rose Beaufont book 4)
OMG! Each new chapter in Rose's life is more exciting than the last! With each new book Sarah expands on her heroines story and grabs the readers imagination! I'm loving each book and can't wait to get to the last to find out how the villain gets vanquished! On to book 5!
The witches have found a way into the Great Library looking for a book that will allow them to take down the House of Fourteen. They kidnap Paul to get him to tell them where it is. Read to see if Rose and Elvis can save him!
ok this is boring (NOT!) another excellent instalment
Wow just loving this series so much fun with all the Beaumont’s and their cohorts. Loving delving into the mystery behind it all can’t wait to see how this unfolds woo hoo next one yeah
It seems like the more books I read in this series the worst they get. You get to some parts of the book and it's like WTF! Rose is by far the worst Beaufont in the series yet. I don't know if I can handle reading through another book, but I going to try.
Twisted witchcraft by Sarah noffke. This book is the one I had the most issues with as it had the most plot holes, in my opinion. As people broke into a magical library that had wards against people that shouldn't be in there, they broke in. But how it ended was good but wasn't my favourite
This book could have been much better if Rose wasn’t such a candy ass. I like my heroes to respond in kind when somebody’s trying to kill them. Not sit back and try to capture, which mostly results in damage to the good guys.
