I have long enjoyed N.T. Wright's New Testament for Everyone series. While somewhat marketed as a beginners commentary, I find it more useful as a devotional. Read a section of scripture a day and then see Wright's thoughts on that particular passage. While this could be of use as a commentary to some, it's not that helpful for me in that regard.
As with any type of book like this, not every passage is equal in its insight, but overall N.T. Wright gives a solid look at the first half of John and I typically enjoy how he approaches the text. If I did have one complaint it is the drastic change of the 20th anniversary edition. It's a very different shape and size as the old version. It's a petty complaint perhaps, but it will look very strange beside my older books in the series.
For two decades N.T. Wright’s The New Testament for Everyone commentary series has made available to a broad Christian audience accessible and spiritually insightful biblical scholarship that takes the reader deep into the books of the New Testament. This anniversary edition serves to acknowledge that these commentaries, much like William Barclay’s Daily Study Bible have stood the test of time. While preachers will have riches to mine, more importantly, so will everyone who seeks a better understanding of the New Testament. The study guide included with these commentaries makes them even more usable on the part of congregational Bible study groups.
