Cole McKinney is a man down on his luck. Born without the gift of speech, he works tirelessly on a cattle ranch in southern Colorado to support his parents back home. While his days are spent attending to his duties, his nights are devoted to fantasizing and dreaming of the delicious ways he could lose himself inside the gorgeous and forbidden mocha beauty, Noelle Williams.Noelle, the black sheep of her wealthy family, is fascinated and drawn to the rugged, yet silent cowboy who works next door. Torn between keeping her distance and laying bare her heart and body for his exquisite and passionate undertaking, Noelle must decide if she is willing to risk it all for the love of a man deemed unworthy by her father and society.
Delilah Hunt is a serial daydreamer, known to stop in the middle of conversations to ponder something a character in her head has done, or is about to do. No, she isn't ready for the straitjacket yet. At least not until she brings to life all the heroes and villains vying for her attention.
Even though the book is very basic in terms of plot, character development, and narrative structure, the story moved me somehow.
I’ve been thinking about it, wondering how this underdeveloped novel had such an effect on me. I especially wonder because the language used for the love scenes can be crude at times and there really weren’t that many of them either.
I think that at the heart of my positive experience is the male character, Cole McKinney, a “Gentle Giant” of sorts. He’s a tall, sexy, mute who feels deeply and works tirelessly for those he loves. As a ranch hand he’s “the boy from the wrong side of the tracks” for the female protagonist, Noelle Williams, a petite recovered drug-addict afraid of ever disappointing her family again.
The fact that Cole can’t speak, can’t orally express his emotions and thoughts, permeates the story. He’s not a simpleton, but he is simple and uncomplicated in his feelings and wants. He also has a strong presence thanks to the personal inner strength he’s developed to withstand the injustice of being judged by his disability instead of by his skills.
In a way, Cole’s large physical build, the apparent fact that his family’s ranch is all he knows, and the way his emotional self-preservation have led him to have but 2 sexual partners in his life, also make him a modern version of the “Noble Savage”.
The result is that the sex scenes are full of primal emotions, of untainted sexuality, as well as of raw desire. Cole uses his body, his visceral need of Noelle, to express his love. His sex becomes an offering to the woman he worships and it also provides her with comfort at the same time it fuels her hunger for him.
Cole dared to dream about Noelle, and dared to become her lover because she wanted him. He dared to love her even though he didn’t think she’d ever feel more than a lustful affection for him and that he thought that she deserved more than the poverty he had lived in.
There’s a warm innocence in the way Cole loves Noelle that makes him proud of the deep hunger they feel for each other, of the way their bodies can tirelessly pursue pleasure when they’re together.
Most definitely what I enjoyed more about this erotic romance I found in between the lines, in the interesting creative concept that is Cole McKinney. I wonder how such a powerful story element could be used in a more polished novel.
Description: When reformed bad girl, Noelle Williams, lays eyes on tall, mute cowboy, Cole McKinney, it’s passion at first sight. Can they overcome their respective baggage and find love in each other’s arms?
The Good: I don’t know what it is about a man who literally cannot talk, but Cole McKinney is HOT, HOT, HOT! You’ll be cheering for this damaged couple by a few chapters in. Also loved that the heroine is super-flawed in a complicated but non-angry-black-woman sort of way.
The Bad: The cover is stock photo, and this book deserved better. Also, while the sex is steaming hot, the physical descriptions tended toward the anatomical. For example, at one point we get a full description of Cole’s cock, complete with veins and color, which can take you out of the story — especially when you’re waiting for the sexing to start.
The Naughty: Rough sex, lots of BJ.
Editing issues: Minor — I counted 9 grammatical mistakes.
A beautiful story about loving someone in their entirety; loving their faults, defects, past, and mistakes.
However, Cole actions were harsh regardless of his intent. And Noelle seemed pathetic at times. 3.5 Stars.
Side note: Funny how I feel that Noelle was too forgiving and understanding. It kind of made her seem desperate. But if the roles were reversed, I would think the Cole is so devoted and loving.
What intrigued me about this story is that it’s not your normal western romance. It had too many different twists from Noelle’s broken past and Cole’s deafness to be considered anything but unique. The plot is steady and passion filled. I really enjoyed that while the characters immediately noticed each other, it wasn’t instant love. There was a constant build-up to the relationship. Noelle is a Pandora box character with so many dimensions. She is strong, independent, full of spitfire, and yet she is vulnerable. Cole comes off as easy going but as the story unfolds you find a prideful man who's a bit self conscious. I think the book would have benefited had it been longer. There were so many dynamics to the book that 137 pages just wasn’t enough. It ended a bit too easily considering all the angst. It’s defiantly worth the read.
3.5 stars. I thought about his book for a while before I reviewed it. I really liked it, but at times, it seemed over edited. I'd find my self thinking, 'how'd they get here?'. I also found their first sexual encounter by the lake strange. It went 0-100 in no time flat. Sometimes that works, here it didn't. That said, I thought the characters were well written. They have obstacles of their own making, which, I'm just tired of reading. " I can't be with you because I have to make the ranch a success first, but I'm not going to tell you my plan, I'm going to let you think I don't want you for months, instead of just saying, 'hey, I want to make a future for us, wanna help?" This drives me nuts. The sex is hot, I loved the idea of a mute character and what that might mean. I wanted to love this book, but I just liked it.
I gave up very early on in this book (and you know I hate to give up on a book). The heroine is a black woman who comes from a "good" family with money and a farm. She has a past and has embarrassed her family because of it, so she is working very hard not to repeat it. Cole is mute from poorer farm and is working to help his family keep the farm. At the point where I stopped, she has insulted him so many times I was tired of her foolishness. For example, they get into some heavy petting pretty early on and her response after its over is "you're not going to tell anyone what we did are you?" Of course he thinks she's ashamed to be with him because he's mute, which, by her behavior he should feel. At this point, I couldn't go on. Maybe it gets better, but the heroine is not worth a try to continue. TTFN-Sandy
I love all this author's books and I am glad she is writing again. I have had this book for a while and decided I wanted to read it. This is Noelle and Cole's story. Noelle is from a rich black family and she has a past. Cole is a lowly ranch hand working away from home to try and save his parents farm.
I love it when the author uses a disability to tell a love story, this is full of passion and intensity. I do find that the author seems to enjoy her couples suffering the tortures of separation until one of them comes to their senses.
The h started out like a rude & cold then turned into a somebody-love-me pathetic mess. While the H started out ok then turned into an a-hole.
*Spoiler-ish*
h was a screw up teenager and has spent the last 7 years doing everything her parents asked trying to earn back their trust and her father still treats her like a (bad) employee. Her father tattles all her bad teenager actions to the H and because she's not the perfect person he thought she was he treats her like crap and leaves her.
This story pulled so many emotional strings. Anger, frustration, pain, fear they wouldn't reconcile and then the ultimate joy when love triumphs. Well done!
Omg Cole was such a disappointment sometimes, like most men because they can never be trusted 🙄… but he did end up pulling through in the end I guess haha. He and Noelle are cute once he stopped acting like a dingbat.
Personally, I like a bit more groveling to happen before the hero can win the girl back, but Cole and Noelle have technically always been a mess so I should expected they’re finally coming together to be equally as messy.
Also I really wished Noelle had told her family, especially her dad, to fuck off. At least just one. I was literally begging for so long throughout this book like paying “girl please tell this man to shut the hell up 😭.” I just needed her to say it at least once.
This is another book on my list of all time favs. Please note there were a few typos but these in no way took away from the book itself. What a sweet and sexy love story, before it ended I wanted to see these two soul mates actually raising and interacting with their first born at least. I LOVED Cole and his love spoke volumes even if it was not audible for the human ear.
This is my first story by this author. Cole and Noelle had little in common. She comes from a wealthy family and is a former addict. He is mute and is working as a ranch hand to hold on to his family's ranch. When he learns of her past he uses that information to push her away. Will he be able to stay away? I really enjoyed this sensuous story.
The story was fine with a mute hero and a heroine who was building her independence after a stint in rehab. I wanted to shake Noelle everytime she said something needlessly slick to Cole and the big breakup was stupid. Also, the "just the tip" sex scene was weird.
I really enjoyed this novel. It's a unique twist, having the heroine be a recovering drug addict and the hero a mute (though not deaf.) Knowing a bit about ASL, Noelle's ability to pick up understanding Cole is overblown to say the least, but other than that minor quibble, this is a beautiful story about two very different people coming together. In the end Noelle is actually the stronger of the two leads and the one more willing to sacrifice anything to be with Cole, while Cole is the one that has a harder time when he learns about Noelle's past and then unwilling to even reach out to her until he thinks he has done enough to build a stable life, instead of just trusting that they could build that life together. But the two are a beautiful couple together even if the road to the HEA is bumpy.
I wad pleasantly surprised by this book. I found the premise rather intriguing and decided to give it a go. A reformed bad girl and a silent cowboy's worlds collide and they will never be the same. The chemistry between Noelle and Cole is explosive from the get go. Some parts of the book, toward the middle were a little iffy for me.Thankfully things picked back up once the relationship between the characters was settled. I LOVE how both Noelle an Cole were able to grow throughout the story. The perception of each other and sense of self worth definitely evolved progressively. I enjoyed the writing despite some minor errors...plus I could forgive a few typos since the story was just plain HOT!!!
This book was all over the place abd it seems neither character had ANY type of common sense. Scenes are unclear in that you have a mute man alternately screaming inside his own head and signing AND evudently cinveying full sentences with an expression. Typed out sentences.
Cole has loved het from afar but treats her like crap. she's been fascinated from afar and treats him like crap. They stop treating each other like crap long enough to perform mutual masturbation (sans first kiss for most of it) by a river. Then, you guessed it! They go back to treating each other like crap.
Ultimately I walked away with thr feeling that the only reason these two got together is because they both felt like they couldn't do any better.
What a heart warming love story, I love that a differently abled man can be a main lead and be strong and all man.I particularly like how both characters have flaws that they believe shapes how the other sees them and that the other person would not be able to cope or love them because of it;this so happens in real life we hide who we are because we believe we are less than or not deserving.Excellent Ms. Hunt, I would love to read a follow up.
I loved loved loved this story! Cole n Noelle were just fantastic together. I so love this story.... It was sooo beautiful, reading it was fulfilling! Cole doesnt speak but his aura made the story hotter! Cole and Noelle's chemistry was awesome. The love scene was pure erotic, filled with need and want for each other!!! I just loved it so much!!! Buy it, read it and you will not be disappointed! I give this story 5/5!!
Revolting... how could someone turn such a story that could have being a great romance into something this crass and tasteless. I think Miss Pace's book " they say love is blind" a better. The man was comfortable with is blindness..... i was really disgusted... to much sex porn and not enough love.. just plain vulgar.... half a star...
This was an awesome read! The mute cowboy Cole is an usual but great hero; loved the way he is written. Mostly I forgot that he is mute - his actions/thoughts and they way Noelle sees/loves him gives the character so much depth. Also like Noelle and her background story. And when they come together, it's sensual and hawt!
3 stars. Sorry wasn't feeling this book. It did had good parts but the rest felt flat and alot of the blah blah. I apologize to the author if I have offended her; But I do want to say that I did enjoy the male character regardless of not able to speak, but he spoke with his heart.
I'm a sucker for a mute man.....why can't they all be mute? This my favorite Hunt book so far. I just wish she'd refrain from using the C word so frequently.
I enjoyed this story. Here is another unbelievable attraction between unlikely people. How they enter their romance is of course unconventional but they give it ago.
