Running Through the Words

The floorplans of most houses are static.

Such is not the case when it comes to 519 Copper Drive.

The old farmhouse, located in Lake Caywood, Pennsylvania, has an enchanting history that needs to be told. A patchwork of lives and stories, the house chooses to articulate its past to Magnolia Fitzpatrick. Acting as a thread to a woven cast of characters, Nol finds herself tangled in a web of relationships that are as complex as the farmhouse-turned-brewery and its magical rooms. In addition to falling in love with the building and all its charm, Nol finds herself drawn to Juli Singer, a partial owner of the Brewhaha. Moving at a maddeningly slow pace, Juli’s previous heartaches prevent him from jumping into something new, making it challenging to blend past with present.

As Juli endeavors to merge old with new, Nol’s almost-brother, Sebastian Porter, finds himself doing the same with his own relationships. His best friend, Bert Robinson, is unexpectedly diagnosed with breast cancer, causing the bandmates to return to Lake Caywood for treatment. Further complicating the situation, a photo surfaces of the two sharing an intimate moment and the men feel pressure to define their relationship within societal standards. Lucy Campbell, Bas’s long-time girlfriend, is also thrown for a loop when the image of her boyfriend kissing his best friend goes viral.

Running Through the Words poses the can the complexity of relationships be defined by a single word?

When she was in the fourth grade, Hannah Rae couldn't fall asleep one night. She climbed out of bed, padded down the hallway to her parents' bedroom, and said, "Mom, I can't sleep." To which her mother replied, "Make up a story in your head." So Hannah created a cast of characters, and a setting, and a plot... and to this day, the first thing she thinks about when she snuggles under the covers each night are those characters and that setting. But the plot is always changing.

I LOVED this book! I love how the author depicts the main characters friendship. The way that Bas and Bert's friendship is explored and shown to be truly the greatest friendship they'll ever have really resonates with me. This book had drama (with an underlying explanation), danger, romance, friendship, and just all around has captured my heart. Being someone who understands what it's like to have such a connection with another person, but not in a romantic way, this book made me able to see things a little different. Also, just reading about how Lucy displays such great kindness, patience, and understanding feels so good to read about. This book questions the complexity of relations in the most beautiful way. This is a great read if you're looking for a heart-warming book. Don't be discouraged by how thick this book is, it goes by fast and every word is necessary to the full development of this amazing story.

This is the second book I’ve read by Hannah Rae and I loved it just as much as I did the first! I love reading about the residents of Lake Caywood and I just fell in love with all of the characters. It was so beautifully written and the story is just so great. I look forward to more books about the residents and learning their stories!

Reasons why I love this book:

Sebastian, Bert, and Lucy have lived in my head since the fourth grade and for the first time ever, I made them available to my readers. It was just fun to share them with folks, you know? They're my favorites.

Juli and Charley are revisited from Just Whistle... as were some other characters. Running Through the Words gives readers some insight to the Brewhaha and why it is the way it is. I'm never going to explain the magic in my books because that's just not how magical realism works, but this novel does provide a bit of insight regarding the magic of the rooms.

You get really connected to the characters... and almost all of them are likable!

The setting is Lake Caywood, which is my favorite town to write about because it's essentially Gettysburg with a lake in the middle (and I sure do love my hometown of Gettysburg!).

Flannel Lobster. I just really love writing about my boys in the band. You maybe met them for a minute in The Way Back, but this is a REAL Flannel Lobster story. (There are more to come too! Stay tuned for Kick It One More Time; Dog-Eared Life; Uptempo, Down; and Come and Go So Quickly.)
