Although it was a well researched book with a lot of potential with plot and development, I felt that this book kinda fell flat in the excitement department. Conflicts were resolved too quickly and easily for there to be any real build up of tense emotions or problems. Jenny was very strong, though still attached to the memory of her husband and didn't seem ready to jump into a new relationship. Gil was a perfect hero, always having the answers and never making a mistake. Zach was a great character. The romance was a bit underdeveloped for me without a lot of back and forth. I felt that there was little obstacle with them falling in love and little conversation between the two in order to develop any. It was a well written book, it just didn't seem to have the fun and drama that I normally look for in a romance novel.

This book was a bit of escapism for me. I enjoyed reading this clean sweet cowboy romance. The cover picture is misleading because in the book the heroine hates wearing a dress and the hero wears a black cowboy hat.

The author has given us a powerful story, the characters are strong, determined, working on a 1200 acre ranch. Success depends on long hours, and jobs that continually need to be done around the ranch. She is making a name for herself, with her prized animals. The son of one of her ranch hands has come back from the war. Needing healing from the loss, and wanting peace. He bonds with her son Zack, and hopes they might open Jenny’s heart to love again. Family story, that will touch the hearts

In Renegade Hearts, author Anne Patrick takes a bunch of strong and delightful characters and presents a charming, gentle story of family love, family differences, of loss and the courage to go forward. And as is her way, Ms Patrick chucks in some suspense and weaves it through the book, not revealing the outcome until the end of the story.

Widowed for two years, Jenny Holloway has a farm to run, a young son to raise, a reputation to build on and the arrival of her stockman’s son, Gil, to contend with. So she’s strong, yes, but not perfect. She discovers plenty of insecurities she has to deal with. She’s not prepared to forgive her step-father for the harsh things he said at her husband’s funeral, and she often stumbles when trying to explain her actions to her son. And when it comes to her growing feelings for Gil, she’s left high and dry trying to come to terms with them let alone explain them to herself, or anyone else. Her passionate love of horses means she sets up a rescue operation with her friend and in doing so goes head-to-head with an influential but disliked local.

Injured in the line of duty, Gil is not pleased to find himself heading back home to the place he couldn’t wait to leave, until he meets Jenny Holloway and accepts a job on her farm.

But did he accept the job because he needed it, or because he’d fallen in love with the woman on first sight?

So many inner conflicts are going on within every character, both major and secondary. And Ms Patrick has a full cast of them. Zach, Jenny’s son is a charmer and worked his way into this reader’s heart almost instantly. The interaction between Zach and Gil as they get to know each other is masterful and heart-warming.

And brilliant wordsmith that she is, Anne Patrick writes a tight and fluent tale where every word matters. There are emotional highs and lows and laughter and tears. There is crime, greed and betrayals.

Whether writing on-the-edge-of-your-seat mystery and suspense, or gentle family life with suspense entwined, Anne Patrick is an author worthy of your Keeper shelf.

My Thoughts:
I am a big fan of Anne’s so it was no surprise I loved this book. Jenny lost her husband 2 years ago to an accident and has run the ranch on her own and taking care of her son Zach. She has no room for romance as she works too hard. When Montgomery offers he son to b hired to help out around the ranch, Jenny jumps at the chance. He just got home from the war and needs a change. Zach and Gil take to one another right from the first meeting. Can Jenny make room in her heart for another man? Gil would love to make Jenny and Zach part of his family.
I loved the characters and the setting. A bit of a western touch to the romance. He hurdles Jenny has to go through was enlightening. The twists in the book make for a great suspense. The book has a bit of everything to entice the reader. Another great book I would recommend.

Actually this book was great for being mostly a love story. There was even some mystery involved.
