Answer Back reads in the shape of a Bell curve. The opening and closing sections are a deft but hohum sample of '60s vintage Modernism--quotes, various voices, strong images that don't really add up to much. But the two central sections, in which Finkel addresses human eroticism and the hell of war, are lively, direct and moving.
