This is a short story written by JH Glaze. The crux of the story is this: Smart people, in genius range, work in a government funded lab on experiments that may or may not have military application!

Alex, the main character is a nice and decent man. He does not mistreat his subject matters or his colleagues. But being decent does not mean he is safe! An experiment in the lab goes disastrously wrong and .... Well it is only forty pages long. I'm not going to rehash the story here. It is, however, dark and deeply disturbing. Why? Because it is all about human nature. And with that comes a very dark and predictable ending. But the fact that it is so very predictable is the crux of the story. We know how these things go!

The one thing I'm getting to appreciate about Jeff, as an author, is that he does not underestimate the intelligence of his readers. He leads you down the path to the bridge. If you wish to cross it - so be it!

Since it is a short story and you can literally use it to fill the time between coffee breaks I would recommend you to read it. The last two pages, as predictable as it was had me wiping away a tear. Who am I kidding. Several tears.

If you like dark and twisted, if you are only human, read this. It makes you reassess an age old truth - We are the superior race because our intelligence gives us the power to reason! Heaven help us.

I give this book a 5/5 star rating. Sensitive readers should think before they read this book. For the rest of us, we should try and learn to think before we do.....

This is a very well written book with meaning for us, our planet, and all the creatures that live on it. To fully review it is to ruin a very well crafted book with a clear, strong narrative. It is not fluffy and cuddly, rather dark and, fighteningly, not unrealistic.

I really enjoyed this book! JH touches on a subject that has always interested me and to this day I wonder if what he writes is something that might actually happen. This is a great book and I recommend it to anyone that likes a scary, realistic, sci-fi type read :)

"Forced Intelligence" by J.H. Glaze is a very clever horror novel about a scientific animal lab experiment gone wrong, leaving several scientists trapped in a locked down government building which is full of animals out for revenge.
It is thrilling, fast paced and keeps you at the edge of your seat; another compelling read with a rather original "what-if" idea that makes this story stand out from the crowd of horror stories.
Apart from the very entertaining and gruesome side to this work there is a more serious note to the book as it almost philosophically says something about the value of human and animal life.
Scientist Alex breaks for a rabbit on his way to work, only to see it killed by a natural predator seconds later.
Then there are arguments and discussions in the locked down building about what goes on in those labs, the cruelty and the purpose of the experiments. This is merely mentioned, not resolved - after all we are in a horror story and Glaze does not swerve of the genre to change the world with a mis-placed political lecture in the middle of fight for survival. As a vegetarian my perception might be slightly tainted but Glaze merely portrays viewpoints that would be expected in the situation and does not take sides. The fact remains that this is simply a great read that I promise you will enjoy.
The lab is a military place and the experiment was to force intelligence into animals for military purposes; there is great irony in the fact that the intelligence turns against its creator.

As a rule, I don’t read short stories. It’s just not my thing. But because I’ve read two other marvelous books written by this incredible author – “The Spirit Box” and “NorthWest” - I decided to give this one a go. After finishing reading it in the space of an hour, I wasn’t actually surprised that I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as quality writing of the highest standard is exactly what I have come to expect from author JH Glaze, and as always, he didn’t disappoint.

Overall I found this short story to be simultaneously entertaining and daunting. I can’t tell you much about the characters, setting, plot, etc, without giving any spoilers, but what I can say is this: it gets you thinking. Even the impressive cover art sent chills up my spine and had me envisioning scientific experiments gone wrong.

I greatly appreciate books where I can walk away with a million thoughts in my head as to the different endings the story could’ve had. The scariest question for me was “but what if…..?” Terrifying truths, a dollop of irony and a laugh or two are only some of the elements that make up this quick read. No matter what your genre preference, “Forced Intelligence” will undoubtedly have an impact on the reader in some way or another. I thus give it a well-deserved 5 stars!

This thriller-sci-fi short story would make an excellent script for a "Twilight Zone" episode.

This was a quick, intense read. It gave me the feeling I used to get as a kid when I watched the Twilight Zone. The author said I'd like it - he was absolutely right.

Entertaining and a page-turner. I read it in about an hour - it is only 57 pages long. It's humorous - I laughed out loud at some points (especially regarding JoJo the parrot). However the humour does not detract from the serious message of the book: The extent to which Mankind is destroying the planet. It's a cross between Michael Chrichton's 'The Andromeda Strain' and 'Animal Farm'. Well done.

I’m still here sitting shaking my head as I write this review… JH Glaze has once again left me stunned by the way his brain is so unstoppable!!!

Forced Intelligence will have you spinning your thoughts around as you are thrown into the world of a “genius” (the science) …. Sure it is highly possible, ok yes most likely that experiments just like these do happen, it doesn’t help put my mind at ease at all!!! The opposite in fact.

The ending was one that I didn’t see coming at all, makes me wonder if things had turned out differently, where would we be in the world, of intelligence?
YES, I actually cried at the ending, no it can’t end this way, oh my gosh, and wow were a few of my thoughts, I was so taken back.

Still baffled and rattled with this phenomenal story, but it’s still a MUST READ. I will warn you though, you will be spinning in circles just like I was as you try to think this one through with all the possibilities that could be actually happening around us, or behind closed doors in this case.

Forced Intelligence is definitely a dark and daunting read, it will have you second guessing the things we “think” are to be true in the world of science.

1. Nerve rattling - Yes
2. Possible - Yes
3. Entertaining - Yes
4. Scary - Yes
5. Twisted - Yes
6. Sad - Yes
And this list could go on and on…

It’s a exceptional read, one that could have had a couple of very different endings. Jeff picked this ending,,, Which one would you or I pick?

I would first like to thank author J. H. Glaze for the opportunity to read Forced Intelligence. I received my copy as a free eBook from Amazon. :-D Thanks

Forced Intelligence will make you change the way you think.

It’s short, and to the point and I was almost crying at the end. Wow never read a book that made me want to cry. (well some did maybe)

I take my hat off to you J. H. Glaze this short / novella story is astounding the writing style is unique and has a set of strong characters, and an interesting and twisting story line that had me on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading.

Forced Intelligence makes you think what is really going on in the would today. Are things like this happening behind closed doors?

This is a short story about how a government experiment can malfunction. A drive to elevate lab animals to human perceived sentience goes wrong and the two scientists responsible for that set of experiments have to justify themselves to a court of their victims.

There are weak points such as the name for the animal who is the main scientist's protector and pulling in environmental issues takes away from the storyline. I'm not saying these aren't important but the preachy effect brought it down some for me.

I like the story idea and the main theme.

I was given this book in return for an honest review. Doctors Connor and Shafer have created a type of booster for increasing intelligience. Due to a mistake in the lab, there are drastic consequences. If they don't fix it fast, they could all be in serious trouble, not just with the military, who may be on there way, but with there lives. Just because you can create something, doesn't meen that you should. This is a short story, but a great one. Definately thought provoking and kind of scary because you have to wonder, if the author thought of it, did scietists? Definately another must read. WaAr

This is a short story about an experiment to grant intelligence to a chimp, which goes wrong. Oh, it works, but with a slight problem. This problem sets off the alerts in the lab, and the lab goes on lockdown and the military and government have to make a decision. As the doctor and the animals work together to get out and try to help each other, they all learn something about themselves. But, do they make it out in time? What a good read. Very interesting points of view. Kept me turning the page. Really liked this one! For a short read, its definitely worth it. 5 of 5 stars for Mr. Glaze! Truly loving this author!

Fear Factor J H Glaze Style!, September 29, 2012
Can you say SCARY!?! This short story was a very good read but definitely rattled my nerves, because it seems like something that could actually happen somewhere. I'd have to say that it raises suspicion & fear of "classified" information that I don't soon care to witness first hand! Whose side would you be on? J H Glaze sure knows how to bring on the fear factor!! ;*}

This was a short story by my new favourite author J.H. Glaze.
Was really nicely written, with only a few persons in there and lots of animals. And, like usually with this author, some funny parts together with some scary parts.
As I never went to army, I found some ideas in there about why I didn't go there and preferred civil service in those days ;-)

Great read for a cloudy day, recommend to anybody that likes a nice story that makes you think!

This was a fast enjoyable read for sure. From start to finish I felt sorry for the animals of this story seeing what we as humans do cause animals and how they may feel about it. I wish it could have ended differently to lead to maybe a longer sequel but no such luck on this on. Great read if you want a quick sit and read... Another great job by Mr. Glaze (bravo)

This is an interesting short story of an experiment that went both right and wrong. Thought it was really interesting. The wrong is horribly wrong and the right is really right. Found it well written and its a really quick read.
