Francis Van Wyck Mason (November 11, 1901 – August 28, 1978, Bermuda) was an American historian and novelist. He had a long and prolific career as a writer spanning 50 years and including 65 published novels.
I had a 1951 paperback of this book in my shelf for many years, until I now actually read it. I admire how the author makes the colorful setting credible into every detail, from Morgan's love stories to his marching his men through the jungles of Panama, and there was enough drama here to keep my interest up. Morgan puzzles me a bit. Is such a heroic yet ruthless character to be considered a good man or a bad one? My old paperback fell apart as I was reading it but it will stay in the shelf nevertheless.
I read this book many, many years ago....I love the works of F. Van Wyck Mason...especially his historical novels....he dealt mostly with the American Revolution and Civil War eras, though he at times wrote about the middle ages and ancient times as well...he was also a writer of mystery fiction as well...if you can find his books read them, they are great reads...
