While I liked the first two books well enough for a 3⭐️ rating, this book gets a 4⭐️ rating. It was a wonderful finale to the interesting story Black crafted. It was exciting; redemptive; and, in all but one case, effective at tying up all the loose ends.

I felt that this installment developed the faith elements much better than the first two. In this installment we hear much more from the Verad, the book of faith that Aly uses for her Truthpulling magic. I love that her strength in magic comes directly from the words of truth in this book.

All in all, I enjoyed this trilogy. I recommend it to readers who can look beyond some issues with characterization and world building in the first installments to see the deeper story that wraps up beautifully in the last.

Scepter of Fire is the epic conclusion to the Scepter and Crown series by C. F. E. Black. This story was so good, beautifully tying up all the loose threads. And while I absolutely love Aly and Red, Grey is still my favorite character! He’s that secondary character that immediately jumps off the page right into your heart!

Without giving away any spoilers, I can say this story exceeded all of my expectations. I am totally happy with how the main characters and the secondary characters stories ended. I was totally sighing during the last few chapters! The action in this story had me turning the pages as fast as I could to see how Aly and Red were going to win the final, epic battle. This is such a creative series and I loved seeing how it all unfolded!

While I’m sad this series is over, and I will definitely miss these characters, I cannot wait for Ms. Black’s next story! It sounds amazing! I highly recommend this YA fantasy series!

I bought a copy of this book and I also received a complementary copy. This is a clean read, but full of allegory. 5 stars.

Now that I’ve got that out of my system I can talk properly. It’s been so hard for me to find good no
spice fantasy I don’t read spice and when you find books like these it’s precious. The plot and
storyline is chefs kiss but the relationships between so many of the characters are just another level.

Wonderful stunning pure and wholesome. I am having a hard time moving on.
Definitely need to get more C.F.E Black but I’ll miss this series so much.

Enjoyed this book as much as I enjoyed the previous two books! The only criticism I have is there were times when I felt like the pacing was a little off, like things were moving too quickly. But overall, it was a really fun work of young adult fantasy with a cohesive allegory, world, storyline, and compelling character arcs.

I don’t have words…

Thank you C. F. E. Black for creating stories that surprised me in the best ways. Maybe my expectations were to low, and it’s not like this is the greatest book in the world( i. e. I would understand anyone who didn’t like them) but I love it and can safely say I will be rereading these books one day.

Every single one of the books in this series is amazing. It's full of such unexpected twists that I audibly gasped and yelled at my screen (startling both the kids and the dog.) Be prepared to binge the series!!

◦ I've received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ◦

I enjoyed a lot the new character development, all of the characters in this story have grown a lot. Starting with Red and ending with Grey each one of them has had some development and they've changed from the very first time we met them.

⮞ 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝-𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 ⮜
The world-building as usual has been beautifully made, and we've gotten even more details about the poisoned river and the secrets behind it. I liked how the world's secrets were slowly revealed to us until the very end.

⮞ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝/𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝 ⮜
I loved the plot twist of events that involved Red's sister. I loved her new development and her braveness. Her relationship with Seb also improved and it was such a happy time seeing them finally getting closer! Red's development was the most impressive, if in the beginning was getting on my nerves this time he showed he has become a true man and even tho he's gone through hell and back he wasn't lamenting about every single bad thing happening in his life but tried to count his blessings and still remain positive that good things might happen. I've also loved how Aly has grown and how more powerful she became. This whole story had no dull moment in it and I've enjoyed the new dynamic with other characters and the secrets and plot twists that happened and kept me on my toes.

⮞ 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐞/TW ⮜
There is abuse mentioned towards one of the characters but the scene isn't too graphic detailed. The romance is fade to black or closed doors, nothing spicy.

This book took me a little longer to read than the previous two, but I think that was just due to my life being a little busier at the moment. The pacing was still good in the book. A lot happened & it was a very entertaining read.

I’m still annoyed with Elise. I feel like she handled her heartbreak so childishly and irrationally. I know she’s a young girl, but I still feel like it’s a bit much to betray your family and friends just to spite someone. Still, she was some better in this book. I really liked her relationship with Seb as it developed. Seb might be one of my favorite characters. I think I could read a whole series about him.

I was disappointed with the lack of Carolyn in this series as a whole. I feel like she was a bit of an underutilized character. And I was definitely disappointed in the lack of interaction (or even mentioning) of Red’s mom. I feel like she would’ve been much more invested in her children’s lives. They seem like a close family, yet the mom moves away on the brink of war, leaving her three teenagers to deal with all the chaos, while she (who ruled beside her husband for years) just chills out at a house in the country? Seems weird. She’s not old and decrepit— her oldest is only like 19!

Love love love Red & Aly together. Red has grown so much over the series and I am so here for it. And Aly has too in different ways! The character development was nice to see and it added a lot to the story.

The plot line with Aly’s army was fun. And I liked that Kassia’s spot as enemy #1 sort of was replaced by all forces of darkness. I feel like that made it feel more true to life.

I didn’t love the ending with the removal of magic. I thought that the magical world was fun and I was sad to see so much of the beauty and power in Aly’s life go. I also felt like her recovery from losing magic was a bit rushed as Red proposed, but I’m all for happy endings so that’s okay!

Thank you so much @cfeblack for sending me an ARC of Scepter of Fire I'm exchange for an honest review!

This is a pretty good story! The plot is fast paced, but it suits the themes and the actions. The characters are very well constructed and the worldbuilding is also great!
Aly managed to train more Zealots as well as defeat Kassia, which allowed her to finally experience life without the shadow of war.
Red is now the king of Tandera, which is also a nice conclusion to his character arc.
Red and Grey having a brotherly relationship was the cutest thing. I wasn't expecting it, but I loved it!
Grey and Naia also leave their ghosts behind, as they move on to a peaceful life!
Elise finally came clean about her spy work and helped Tandera become free from evil. I really liked her dynamic with Seb, they complement each other nicely.
The only thing I didn't enjoy in this book was the ending (I'll explain why down below, but it will contain spoilers). It just didn't feel like it was the best ending in my opinion.
Overall this is a good book, about the challenges between light and darkness, truth and lies, culminating on an event that will change everything.

SPOILERS:
I didn’t like the fact that every sorcerer lost magic. I have a tendency to dislike the trope where the powerful woman loses her powers at the end, and this is no exception. Magic was an essential part of her life and she was quite fond of it, as were a lot of people. It was an important trait of hers that was lost.
Also, I'm not really sure why Red suddenly is the embodiment of magic or how it can be even used. But that might be explained in a sequel or spin-off. 🤔

‘Madness can only be held off so long’
While it seems that some of our modern-day “kings” might have an evil magic user controlling their every thought, the reality of the Puppet Master isn’t all so far-fetched. Greed, honorifics, pride, and power can all pull strings – and they don’t have the masses’ best interests at heart. We common folk must be alert for any and all dubious changes, question authority, and take reasonable action to protect our freedoms. That sentiment may seem hypocritical coming from someone considered to be an ultra-conservative (greater good over individual wants), but we all gotta be prepared to take down the black cloud that’s racing toward us. If the king is busy "in his counting house counting all his money”, there aren’t any Beacons and Beholders IRL to save us.

Students need a safe space in which to critique how they’re being taught, so they ask for explanations and/or request tailored lessons. The best teachers create students who can provide feedback as well as teach the teacher a thing or two. One of Aly’s Zealots does just that – and it’s in his best interest to help her be able to help him with his craft.

Not everyone lives a life of happiness and fulfilment. Many people struggle and even have painful ordeals thrust upon them. They live under their own dark shadow:
‘The past is a prison few people ever escape’
‘I liked the world better without the shadows that haunted me’

Fave quote:
‘I personally don’t want to live in the land of *we’re-all-going-to-die*.’

On a lighter note, I appreciated seeing people come together in times of common need and rebuilding. Hopefully, a new normal.

[ARC Review]
An epic ending to a wonderful trilogy. How I've loved laughing, crying an screaming for joy with these characters in the past three books + additional stories.

This mostly consists of: preparation for war, a high stakes magic mystery and...yes....epic, epic battles!
The thing I missed a little, which is why I can't count this one as a new favourite, is the growth and interactions on a more personal level in the first three quarters of the book. The past two books were full of that and that really worked for me. I was missing some of the banter and personal conflicts between main characters, which is what gets me fully engaged normally.
Having said that, fair is fair, I binge read this and thoroughly enjoyed it. All of that was set right in the last quarter which was full of beautiful emotional character arc endings that gave me all the feels and let me finish the book with a satisfied sigh.

In addition, I really enjoyed the scenes from Elise's pov. There's a good conflicted character!

This is absolutely clean, YA epic/romantic fantasy: this particular book leaning more towards epic than romantic. And it's absolutely noblebright fantasy with characters clawing their way out of darkness into a new dawn.

I'm definitely excited to share this trilogy with my teenage niece in a year or two.

*I received a free arc from the author. This does not affect my opinions expressed in this review.

Overall, I enjoyed this series. I do think the writing could improve in a few ways. There were some loose ends, and people we don't hear about after they part ways with the MC. I got attached to them, and I thought they were a bigger part of the story than they turned out to be.

Sometimes leaps were taken in the story that I didn't fully follow. Almost like the author knew what happened, and it didn't feel necessary to detail out. For readers that don't know the world, story, or characters those details are crucial. It's not always easy to make those assumptions. Sometimes, it stressed me out in this story that I had to fill in the gaps.

The word facade was used quite often. Haha, I know that isn't a big deal, but little things like that bug me. There were several typos, but I reported them all through kindle. Pray they fix them!

The magic in this series is super unique. I really enjoyed it. It was very complete, and I felt like it wasn't a mystery how the magic worked.

The conclusion was very satisfying. I love a happy ending. There is some tragedy as well, so don't think everything resolves perfectly.

An impressive story from an indie author! I will read more of her books in the future!

Book 3 in the Scepter and Crown series

Lies vs Truths
Mad hope. Trust. Fear. Betrayal. Pain. Lies. Guilt. Despair. Forgiveness. Family. Safety. Broken. Redeemed. Restored.

Page-turning conclusion to the series written in multiple POVs which adds so much to the overall storyline. It's filled with one interesting twist after another. The story is a wonderful representation of overcoming fears/past/ghosts. I was enthralled from beginning to ending. Highly recommended.

Believe in self. Finding true place amid turmoil. Move out of darkness into the light. Defeat the enemy. Never give up. Rise from the ashes. Coming home.

"power of truth" "ugliness of lies" "fighting lies with truth"
"Crowns weren't won in times of peace."
"From the ashes, truth will rise."

Just the book I was waiting for, this story is unique to the fantasy world. The characters have a depth to them that will interest you, and the plot is slow and steady and made me want to know more about it. The conclusion came in with a blast. The first half of the book was all about how things are progressing after book two’s ending and then the second half was all the action needed to finish the story with a bit of surprise. I liked Naia a lot in this one. Red and Aly are as good as they always are, power house. The slow-burn romance is so different and lovable. I liked how it all turned out.

Scepter of Fire was absolutely amazing! With higher stakes and the battle for truth, this book has it all. I love the world building in this series and it's unique magic system. The characters are compelling and realistic. Spoilers ahead!!!! I'm not usually one for a happy ending where all the main characters end up with someone or get married; but in this one it felt right. I'm also not a fan of worlds where magic is destroyed and everyone has to learn to live without it. Especially in a world with a wondrous magic system of truth and lies, it was very sad and tbh disappointing. But overall, the ending was satisfying. I can't wait to see what C.F.E. Black writes next.

I’ve been waiting for this book since the end of book two and it was worth it! The conclusion of each character’s arc were well done and we got to see it in their perspective which was a nice touch. The progression of the story from the end of book 2 was a nice and steady pace that didn’t feel rushed to just end the series. Aly and Red’s relationship was adorable and made the slow burn worth it. The ending surprise me and enjoyed it.

I would recommend this series. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I knew it would end well, but it definitely didn’t end in the way I expected. It was a good book that kept me reading and engaged, but I still feel like it fell a little short. Much like the rest of the series. I feel like the characters weren’t developed as much as I had hoped as well as the magic. I am left with some weird feelings but I do want to reread them again at some point to fully grasp it all.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (4.5 stars)

I felt the pacing for this final book in the Scepter and Crown series was a little slower than the previous books, with a lot of political intrigue and maneuvering, but once it ramps back up, it’s a fast-paced race to the end.

I thoroughly enjoyed binge-reading this entire epic fantasy series. (And I can’t recall the last time I binged a series!) So kudos to the author for drawing me into her story with the prequel novella and for having characters I wanted to follow as well as an intriguing plot. Well done!

I read this as soon as it released on KU. So good!

I’m just mad that it says this is the last book in the series.
Excuse me!?!?!?
I’m not done reading about Red and Aly!!!
Also, there was something at the end that makes it seem like there should be another book…. I won’t say what because it is a major spoiler but I need another book to help explain this :)

I read this book so fast after the second in the series. And she waits all the way til the very end to resolve all the major questions in the series - or at least, she resolves most of them, and then raises new ones. So good. I feel like I said such an abrupt goodbye to the characters at the end. I'd love to see more from this world!

Plenty of loose ends are tied up in Scepter of Fire. There’s so many things that I want to exclaim over but I can’t ruin the book for others. As I read the book I became more excited as the story progressed. The ending was both heartbreaking and beautiful.
