Ahhh, volume 5. The introduction of my absolute favourite Sailor Moon villain. I think the Black Moon arc is just my favourite overall really (both in manga and the anime).

I could write a really in depth review talking about why I think Black Lady (AKA Wicked Lady for those like me who grew up with the English dub) is THE BEST EVAHHH... Or I could ransack this review with wicked cool (see what i did there?) images of her instead...

**SPOILERS**

Wow. SO MUCH happened in this book! First of all, everyone found that Chibiusa is Usagi and Mamoru's child, which I knew was coming up soon, so that didn't shock me too much.

I also knew that she eventually turned into Black Lady, but I hadn't seen any of the episodes of the anime where that happens, so I was excited to finally learn the story behind it - and, oh my, was that an emotional storyline!

First of all, Black Lady kissing Mamoru TWICE was super uncomfortable. The fact that no one really cared was also alarming. I looked into it and realise that it's not saying Chibiusa has incestous feelings for her father and that it's about jealousy and her wish to be more like her mum, but still. Strange.

And, of course, Sailor Pluto. Oh Sailor Pluto, you did not deserve that. Neither did Chibiusa. I understand why Chibi was so resentful and brat-like now, and for her to see her one and only friend die right in front of her eyes was truly heartbreaking. Pluto was such a kind soul, and did not deserve that. I never thought anyone on the good side would die in this series, so that was a shock.

Chibiusa finally transforming into a guardian is really exciting though! I've read about her weapons and different attacks, and I know eventually she gets a unicorn and a boyfriend or something like that, so I'm super excited to watch her grow as I read more. I'm really loving this series, and I really wish it didn't have to end!

The conclusion to the Black Moon saga (and the beginning of a new one I am guessing, these poor girls never have a moment rest). I disliked Chibi-Usa so so so much. I get that she wants to be an adult, it must be horrible to be 900 years old and not get bigger. But bitch, no. The things she did in this one were just horrible. She is selfish, horrendous, and should understand things a bit more. And oh boy that incest. Girl, I get that you are infatuated with your daddy, but oh no you don't do shit like this. That is just gross disgusting. This was a tough volume to read. I didn't like that Chibi-Usa got to have powers. It felt a bit like, aww you poor poor thing, you did shitty things but it is OK, you had a harsh past. Here some magical powers to make things go away.
I loved how the Dark Moon saga ended though, and I loved the love and compassion that Usagi showed in this one. Wiseman was just freaking creepy and a manipulative ass.
I felt so sorry for Pluto. The decisions she had to make in this one were heartbreaking.
I wasn't happy with the ending. Could we please just have a volume or two without that little brat? Please? Please?
Gorgeous art though, it just pulls you in.

"Vomits in corner." Is actually an update I posted while reading. There was a part of this story where I actually walked away. Don't get me wrong, I love it when a story goes out of the lines to shock me and give me something different. However, transforming someone, then basically have some incest kissing, making me gasp in horror—and the characters—then ignoring it after that is sloppy. And disturbing. Whey was that even put in?

This whole volume for me was sloppy. A huge step down. Besides that vomit inducing bit that had no purpose or follow up. As if the author was in a rush to get to the end of this plot arc. My over analyzation of why Mamoru ignores Usagi and showers his love on Chibiusa was for not. Because everything is explained away. Mamoru loves Usagi so much that he doesn't want her to be worried so he protects Chibiusa so that Usagi doesn't have to worry. Though I think a "Be safe my love, I'll protect Chibiusa don't worry!" Would be nice. Or if they're not in danger a little affection for both the girls would be good. The choppy parts finally show that Mamoru, Usagi, and Chibiusa spent fun time together. Yet the way even that information is divulged is so choppy that it can only be assumed that was in the past.

The cold Neo Queen Serenity wakes up. And suddenly she's not cold. She's regal but clearly has some of the fun quirks that makes us love Usagi! It's just weird. The impression that was given before was that Serenity was cold and aloof to everyone but King Endymion. Was she just playing at it so that she wouldn't change the future? Usagi is then suddenly explaining how much she loves Chibiusa. Even though all readers have seen is how suspicious and cold she is of Chibiusa. This is baaaaad. No plot development or character growth here. Things are just kind of explained and readers are just supposed to go with the flow. Well. I'm disappointed.

What I do love is that this is Mamoru and Usagi's first real "fight". They survive it and come out stronger and more in love. Which is lovely. Usagi loves Chibiusa now, which makes for some warm and more interesting moments. Chibiusa becomes stronger . . . somehow though her transformation into Dark Lady is really shoddily put together. In this state the vomit inducing moment happens . . . and is ignored. What drove this to happen? (Oh, I know what it is. But this is a kids manga!) Besides that there really isn't anything else of note on character development. There's a tragic death that "wakes" everyone out of their stupor and tries to "explain" everyone's sudden change of heart. But the death is lost on me as the character was not well developed enough to pull on my heart strings. Though part of me goes, "ah, and I wanted more of her." However, this series has already proven that it can and will bring characters back to life, so maybe readers will get to see more.

In the end. This was crappy plotting. Horrid. This volume. No. The Black Moon arc as a whole needed more time to develop. The pacing and tiny amount of time it was given to be told really held this story back. Worst, it held every single character back! (Though I did get some Makoto development in the previous volume. Thank you.) Points for the artwork still being solid. The art has clearly grown even lovelier. It's a shame it seems everything else has digressed backwards. Takeuchi admits that Chibiusa and this arc was created to give her somewhere to go with he story, and it shows. Here's hoping she gets her footing in the next arc. Warily I go trudging on ahead.

Sexual Content: Some incest kissing. And then some nice safe kissing.

2/5- Average/disappointing, library check-out.

The reason why this got a higher rating than the last one, despite having some of the same issues and the ending to the Black Moon arc was somewhat lacking (the actual final battle was like 1 page long and it didn't even show the actual fight - the "final" battle with all the senshi united was FAR more interesting).: SAILOR PLUTO AND BLACK LADY. Also, ChibiUsa (when she returned), was far less annoying in this one, mainly because she finally evolved and was able to grown (and I believe, mature) and access her power.

Also, the inner senshi were finally back (although not participating enough), so that's a plus. I think that's the main reason why this arc doesn't work as well - it's too focused on the Royal Family (Mamoru, Usagi and ChibiUsa) and it leaves the other characters aside, to a point where they are only good to be captured and further Sailor Moon's plot. Anyway, the S arc is coming next volume AND IT'S MY SECOND FAVORITE AFTER STARS AND THE OUTER ARE COMING AND SAILOR SATURN IS COMING AND I'M EXCITED!

This was confusing. So many of the characters look so similar. Half the time I’m like “wait, which one is sailor moon?” Plus what is up with this villain? Is he a skeleton? Is he a planet? Is he a dark presence? What the what? And who are these dumb cronies hanging around the bad guy? I guess I’m supposed to remember them from the previous volume but obviously they aren’t memorable. And finally should we even address the weird incestuous behavior happening with The Black Lady?? What the heck? Yuck-o.

I knew what was going to happen in this volume. I still had to cry at those last few pages.

The Nemesis as the second big enemy was defeated and I'm now excited to see what the next volume will bring as I haven't read it yet.

Things I loved in this volume:
- the transformation of "Small Lady" to "Black Lady" to "Sailor Chibimoon"
- the love and friendship between Chibiusa and Sailor Pluto
- the bickering between Usagi and Chibiusa

I gotta say Chibi-Usa and her other form as the "Black Lady" is a great villain and towards the end with that really emotional scene... just beautiful. I always thought it was a little odd that that Chibi-Usa seems to be somewhat attracted to Tuxedo Mask... despite him being her dad. Does that weird anyone else out? Or just me? Meh. Anyways, I still love this series and love rereading it!

Unfortunately, this story arc isn't my favorite and while there is some great characterization going on with Pluto and Chibi-usa, the vehicle by which the characterization is presented just doesn't really capture me. Also, the weird way that Chibi-usa sees Endymion and Neo-Queen Serenity as her parents and Tuxedo Mask and Sailor Moon almost as a pair of strangers that she meets and not connected to her in any way is disconcerting. Her desire to monopolize Tuxedo Mask/Mamoru is kind of cute when she's in the body of a child, but when she "grows up" the image of them together is a bit creepy and has a slight incestuous suggestion, even though you know that it's just an extension of a child's desire to monopolize a parent (thinking otherwise makes my head want to explode). Almost an example of an Oedipus/Electra Complex I suppose.

However, in spite of all that weirdness, the gorgeous art shines through. There are some really nice panels and spreads in the volume which are really noticeable because you get beautiful pages with all this white space in the sea of super dense and dark panels containing the Black Moon scenes. Can't wait for the next volume, finally the intro of the Outer Senshi!

Yes, I still grit my teeth over the internal contradictions in the story line, and often I just wish the story had gone in a different direction than it did. But generally, I find this volume to be stronger than most of the ones before it. We're past the formulaic "attack each senshi in turn" chapters, and now with each chapter pushing the story forward, it's a lot more interesting. We see more of the friendship between Chibi-Usa and Sailor Pluto, and get a clearer idea of Chibi-Usa's relationship with her parents, and I think Takeuchi is doing better at connecting those relationships to the characters' actions (including, alas, Black Lady's feelings towards Mamoru…). A fairly good volume, with better things to come.

So excited to be watching Sailor Crystals and seeing how accurate it is to the manga now. I’m truly adore the manga so much, the lore of the legendary silver crystal is 10/10. Let alone how they can travel back in time or to the future. The villains (black lady) is my fav amongst the other villains in the anime from the 90’s but now she’s somewhat hovering lol. Her outfit did eat tho, but the obsession with her dad??!! I-

A magnificent, breathtaking conclusion to the Black Moon Arc of 'Sailor Moon'. Each arc delivers on excitement and a beating heart.

Space-time has been distorted; a storm of chaos ensues throughout the time dimensions. Chibiusa is awakened by Wiseman into Black Lady, Queen of Darkness and of the cursed planet Nemesis. Usagi, imprisoned on Nemesis in Black Moon castle, searches around for answers, and with her belief in the Legendary Silver Crystal's goodness, and the help of her still-dormant future self, she unleashes new unlimited power. As Sailor Moon once more, she frees the other Guardians from a darkness-chamber deep within Nemesis's core. Together, along with Sailor Pluto, the girls set out to find and save Chibiusa and Tuxedo Mask, who's been brainwashed again. More than anything, Black Lady wants him to herself - in all her cunning and wicked glory, she's also a dark reflection of Usagi, and her jealousy of Mamoru and Chibiusa’s closeness. Wiseman is revealed to be Nemesis itself - the planet of darkness of the future, and origin of the Malefic Black Crystal, the evil counterpart to the Legendary Silver Crystal. Wiseman is then revealed to be Death Phantom, the criminal Neo-Queen Serenity banished to Nemesis centuries ago. The battle is on: Nemesis is coming into orbit with the earth of the past, engulfing everything in darkness. The betrayed and malevolent Prince Demande plans to put the Legendary Silver Crystals of the past and the future together and destroy the universe. But then, after little Diana offers to take her place temporarily as guardian of the Door to Space and Time, Sailor Pluto breaks the biggest taboo - using her Garnet Rod, she stops time. And so she dies. At the death of the most precious friend she's ever had in her lonely and unsatisfied life, a grieving Black Lady turns back into Chibiusa - and awakens as a Sailor Guardian. This is the key to reviving Neo-Queen Serenity from her crystal slumber; at her daughter's finally experiencing life as a true adult and royal of the Silver Millennium. Near the end the queen shows, for wanting the Small Lady to grow to believe in herself, that she does love her only daughter more than anything; that the former protector of love and justice still has a heart after a thousand years of ruling a kingdom. Anyway, Sailor Moon's and Tuxedo Mask's love and powers combined quite literally help give birth to Sailor Chibi-Moon and her power of light alongside them, and together they seal away Dark Phantom/Nemesis. Black Moon is defeated and Silver Millennium is restored. The Sailor Guardians are given new titles by Neo-Queen Serenity: Mars, Guardian of War; Mercury, Guardian of Wisdom; Jupiter, Guardian of Protection; Venus, Guardian of Love. And Sailor Moon, Guardian of Mystery. Sailor Moon briefly meets her future self - no longer than necessary in case of a time paradox - and back in the present earth we are granted a tearful reconciliation between Usagi and Chibiusa, as through hardships in space and time and chaos the two have become bosom friends. They say their goodbyes as Chibiusa returns to the 30th century, not yet a woman but not quite a little girl anymore...

But then she returns under the pretence of Usagi offering to train her as a Sailor Guardian. Let the hilarity ensue!

End of the Black Moon Arc.

Every panel in this edition to the 'Sailor Moon' manga series is a marvellous treat. It is a dark story that retains a hopeful heart in the presence of Sailor Moon herself.

While the other Guardians don't get to do much in this finale, the Pretty Guardian of Love and Justice demonstrates the strongest resolve to fight, and a determination to protect everyone, than she's ever had before. It really is as if she's grown with the power of herself as a queen and mother in the unfathomable but blessed utopian future. For a queen and mother is what she will be someday. She is drawn in the best fighting poses, and the art even has her clenching her fist in anger at the enemy. Yet there are panels which show her in prayer; at inner peace and tranquillity when up against evil. When taken prisoner by Prince Demande, Usagi doesn't wait to be rescued - without hesitation she uses the opportunity to bravely seek out her captured friends. She also reveals more of her pessimistic-yet-reasonable side when she begins to have doubts about whether the Legendary Silver Crystal's power does more harm than good, like Black Moon believes; and whether she is in fact a “fearsome woman”, as they call her. However, Usagi wants to believe in peace and the goodwill of others - a strength befitting a queen. Sailor Moon is more multilayered than anyone gives her credit for, and at any stage of her life she will fight to protect the universe and those she loves at any cost.

There are other outstanding, heartfelt moments: Such as Sailor Pluto finding a new friend in the cute little kitty Diana, just before her death scene. Her speech to Chibiusa about there being different kinds of love and different ways of expressing it is also superb. Then there’s Usagi and Chibiusa's growing development as they come to work as a team, and their words of farewell which feel unscripted and true.

Everything is wrapped up neatly and with all the sentimentality known and loved in 'Sailor Moon'.

Next up, the Death Busters Arc!

Final Score: 5/5

This volume gives us the conclusion of the Black Moon arc. I said it on my previous review, but I'll say it again here: I really like this arc! Not only for Chibi-Usa/Black Lady, though that's a big part of it. I like the time travel, the "taboos" and getting to see a glimpse of Usa-ko & Mamo-chan of the future.

Speaking of taboos...Not just the time taboos that Queen Serenity explained to Pluto long ago, but the taboo of Black Lady and Endymion. The Electra Complex to the extreme. And while it may be a little uncomfortable for readers, I think that it's "edgy" (for a "kid's" comic book) and I like that added element in brings to the story. I think a lot of people forget that this isn't the "real" Chibi-Usa, but instead a dark, corrupted version of her created by Nemesis to get to Sailor Moon et al. Her feelings of wanting to be the center of attention, and the love her father has always shown for her are warped into what we see.

One recurring theme through this manga is how love will conquer. Not only romantic love like between Usa-ko and Mamo-chan to work together to defeat Nemesis, but here we also get to see the love of friendship and how it saves Small Lady and Pluto. We (finally) also see some parental love from Neo Queen Serenity towards Small Lady. It breaks my heart to think that she waited 900 years for a simple hug from her mother. I agree with another reviewer who said that if this is what maturity looks like on Usagi - basically ignoring her daughter and never showing affection - I don't like it. At least we do see some care and affection from Usagi toward Chibi-Usa, even if there is still some jealousy and annoyance. I can only hope that that means her future self will be more loving!

One thing that I didn't like - no translation notes?! In the translation notes of the following volume, it refers to the "translation notes in volume 5," but my copy doesn't have any! :( I don't know if this is a misprint from the 1-6 volume set or what, but I was disappointed.

This was a weird and confusing one for me.
Chibi-usa is the daughter of future Usagi and Mamoru.

Chibi becomes Black Lady. Very cool bad guy! But I was VERY UNCOMFY that chibi kissed HER DAD on the mouth in a romantic way twice. Yuck! But I understand that it was NOT saying chibi wanted to be romantic with her dad, it was more just she wanted to make Usagi jealous and she essentially wanted to be the evil version of her mom, Queen Serenity. But still. Yuck.

Sailor Pluto!!!!!! I thought they were gonna bring her back when time started again T-T

It’s beautiful that her sacrifice is what saves chibi-usa. However I’m sad that it seems like the only way to save chibi was for sailor Pluto to die. T-T

Tbh I’m not super fond of having chibi-usa around. I’d love to spend more time with all of the sailor scouts (including sailor Pluto!) but it seems that she’ll be around more. I dont know, I don’t hate chibi-usa or anything. I just prefer seeing more of the “original” sailor scouts than her. Oh well. I still like it enough to want to finish the series.

This is when it goes all over, with this crazy time thingies, and manages to come up with a magnificent "new villian" story and an awesome final battle.

Time travel always has its problems, but oh my goodness! So many ridiculous scenarios that couldn't possibly make sense with everyone time traveling around like crazy.

I really love Sailor Pluto! She's so stalwart and dependable, and then she risks her life to save everyone. It's her faithful love that saves the day!
I like how there is a lot of emphasis on believing in yourself and lending strength to your friends.
