I enjoyed many of the short stories contained in this book. They were all twists on what we've come to recognize as classic fairy tales. My personal favorites were "The Tower" by Jaidis Shaw, "Hope and Appleseeds" by Jocelyn Adams, "Souls of the Ocean" by Rachel Ayers, and "Gretal" by Ashley Hendricks.
If you like fairy tales, especially those with a twist or those that are completely twisted, check out this book. Very worth the read.
I've been pouring through the Twisted Fairy Tales: Volume Two anthology, which came into being through the hard work and fierce determination of my darling Isabelle Rose. My favorites so far are "Pru and the Gunslinger", by L.M. Magalas (a Wild West retelling of Rumpelstiltskin), "Gretel", by Ashley Hendricks (haunting, aching, beautiful prose) "Soul of the Ocean", by Rachel Ayers (mystic, compelling, perfectly-crafted - forget Disney's Little Mermaid), and "Plain Sister Pretty" by Heather Whittington (the Dancing Princesses gender-bended and transplanted into feudal Japan).
The individual stories themselves are all good, some better than others, but none of them terrible. However, I didn't think there was a wide enough variety between tales in this anthology. Hansel and Gretal, Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Snow White made too many appearances, often not different enough from each other or their original tales for my liking. Still some of them were fascinating and ingenious and overall this anthology was a good read.
