"Don't Get Mad…Get Even" by J.L. Campbell is short story collection that is well worth the read. Set in Jamaica, each story features a unique new cast of characters who've been wronged in some way and, like the title suggests, they're dead set on getting even. The lilt of the dialogue brings alive the sound of Jamaica so I could almost hear the conversations in my ear as I read.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. If pushed to pick a favorite story, it would be 'Sudden Emancipation', an emotional story about two young sisters in a bad situation. Or maybe I'd pick 'Entrapment', with the obeah woman and a cool supernatural twist. Okay, it would be hard to decide on the best one because all five of these stories were so engrossing.
This short story collection was an enjoyable read. As the title promises, each story focuses on a character who’s getting even against someone who didn’t do right by him or her. This is mostly contemporary, but there’s a touch of paranormal in this collection. I also enjoyed the setting of Jamaica and the patois interspersed throughout the book. J.L. Campbell is an author to watch out for. No matter how long each piece was, I was fully involved with the characters’ thoughts and actions.
This is a collection of five short stories. I've become a fan of these little guys because they're short and they often pack a punch. And these do pack a punch--often literally. I felt for all the characters in the stories and I learned a lot about the male/female relationship in Jamaican culture. Pick it up, you can't beat the price.
I enjoyed this story but felt confused as to the goings on. The story seemed to have jumped from one situation and then back in time. As it got to the end, it started to get good and then it was the end. Even though this one left me lost, I will still read more of J.L's books.
This book was filth. The book was only short stories that consisted of women killing their husbands basically.I don't have anything else to say, because the plots were so pointless.
This Book has a New Definition of "You Reap what you Sow"!
Jamaica's own, J.L. Campbell, brings the island in a collection of masterfully-written short stories. Call it karma, or whatever faith that defines "when wrong comes back on person" is brilliantly told.
From the first story to the last, the author paints vivid tales of abuse and revenge through her poetic prose. Within each word, I could hear the oceanic waves, along with the sweet subtle scents of jasmine.
But what I also enjoy is how Campbell shares the island's beautiful language. As I'm reading most of dialogue, I'm slowly repeating the words, feeling as if I'm a part of the story.
If you're a fan of suspense and thrills, and chills, you need to buy or download this book!
There are talented writers and then there are gifted storytellers, and Campbell has an amazing gift for prolific storytelling.
Don’t Get Mad…Get Even” was my first read by J. L. Campbell and most definitely not my last!!! In this book of Jamaican inspired shorts, the author thoughtfully shows readers an array of imprisoned nightmares. And although each short story was of abuse, infidelity or broken promises they skillfully showcase the author’s ability to approach sensitive subjects in a not so graphic manner while still delivering a POWER PUNCH!
I was digging the Jamaican lingo and upon ending, I found there is a glossary of Jamaican terms that I’d wish I’d known about at the start. Overall, “Don’t Get Mad... Get Even” is SURE TO EVOKE EMOTION! I look forward to reading more from J.L. Campbell.
This book was alright. The stories were super short and only like 5 stories so it's a quick read. Revenge is always sweet. Especially when it's so extremely justified, as is in every story here. I loved one of the stories where the children were forced into adulthood and went through hell to fight back. The rituals and beliefs touched on in a few stories was very interesting and super powerful in all the characters lives. In the end, getting even is the best revenge.
Ms. Campbell has shown that she knows chem Heritage. I liked everyone of her stories. Some of the stories had an underlying sense of humour and the are totally relatable. I would recommend that everyone gives her "Don't get mad....Get even" short stories.
Ms. Campbell touches some areas that we all could come across or know someone with these issues.. though there is some laughter involved some of these areas are real..love my Jamaican people!!!
This short story collection is very entertaining and original. They all have different twists and the wronged party doesn't always triumph, but boy, do they make their tormentors pay!
I loved this book. It was a great little read!! Took me no time, but kept me interested and wanting more. Not going to put any spoilers here!!You have to read it yourself!!!
I always say life is about choices. You either allow someone to choose for you or you make the choices for yourself. Interesting stories subject matters. You have infidelity. You have domestic violence. You have suicide. It was like a tale of no return. I know some will read and say this couldn't be me, where others will say these are people I know. It's funny because while somethings maybe considered taboo, you recognize that in every culture you have those unspoken truths.
I tried to decipher the story line , but I could not find a connection. Stories were fragmented and had no connection. I started to put it down several times but I am not the type of person who can let a book I started go unfinished. This book in my opinion was confusing and disconnected.
This book was nothing like I thought it would be. it was all short stories and I am not fond of those. There's about four or five the last book is the longest. However I must say I was a f as st read. The stories are Jamaican based. This was Marist times as doing this author. I research her a little more to see if all her books are like this.
