Elaine Hogan, a mother of three, has crafted an engaging, heartfelt, informative, and educational book for parents, caregivers, and teachers of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. As a parent with a child with ADHD, she found herself feeling overwhelmed. She wanted to learn more about her son's diagnosis to help him overcome the challenges that come along with a behavioral illness. Her book, "The Frazzled Parent," highlights life, self-care, and educational skills that children and teens should adopt to become more self-sufficient and manage their condition. Her book also offers self-care advice for parents because they need to stay strong and healthy to support and care for their children.

I have not been diagnosed with ADHD, but I wanted to read the book to learn more about the neurodevelopmental condition as an educator. I am an English professor and academic tutor, and I work with students of all ages, helping them increase their reading comprehension and develop their writing skills. I wanted to gain a better understanding of the disorder. How it affects an individual's learning process: If I ever need to work with a child or adult who possesses the condition, I can create an individual learning plan or differentiate my teaching approach to help the student understand the material better. As an educator, I believe education emboldens our minds and allows us to imagine good thoughts and ideas. Education prepares us for our future, and it's crucial for growth and development, so I am always eager to learn more ways to help a student and expand on my pedagogy.

Hogan has crafted a well-written book that explains ADHD from multiple perspectives. She begins the novel by discussing a parent's struggle to balance the hope and fears of raising a child with a disability. Raising a child with ADHD presents challenges with managing their behavior, developing life skills, and helping them understand and cope with their diagnosis. She opens the story by describing a mother's experience seeking information and resources to understand ADHD and how it would affect her daughter's life. I like that the author incorporates research from scholarly sources like the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to share the facts about the diagnosis to not only eliminate people's thoughts and myths but to provide evidence to help parents and others understand how a child can be diagnosis and how many children the illness affects and the challenges they will need to overcome. The author creates a good balance between research and statistics with personal experiences from celebrities and her own family, which I thought made an empathic tone and shows that the author understands what you may be facing.

The book is well-organized, with different chapters describing treatment options, parenting tips, and how a person with ADHD can improve their social skills and develop healthy habits that they can use throughout their life. I love how the book highlights a holistic approach to show how a parent, caregiver, or teacher can support a child with ADHD and discuss more than medication for treatment options. My absolute favorite aspect of the book is when the author states that "an ADHD diagnosis should not be seen as a hindrance, but rather as a chance to work with strengths and overcome challenges, and it can also be a journey of growth and self-discovery" (pg.8). I'm glad to see the author highlighting that an individual with a disability can live a happy and healthy life because society does not always see individuals with a disability or health condition as equals or treat them with kindness or respect. Everyone deserves to live a happy life and accomplish their dreams. It may be a journey to overcome the challenges, but anyone can do it with a growth mindset and support from their loved ones.

The Frazzled Parent is a compassionate, educational, and delightful story that provides helpful tools for parents caring for a child with an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. She describes the challenges a family faces with real-life examples and personal stories. The book is a beautiful guide to help support individuals with the illness, whether you are a family member, friend, parent, or teacher. It also enables you to understand the diagnosis and gives insights into individuals' struggles and a better understanding of their lifestyle. This book can be a great resource to help others with ADHD. The Frazzled Parent is the perfect book to get the information, tools, and support families and teachers need to help people of all ages with ADHD.

Review:
This is a very informative book. It dissects ADHD from top to bottom and goes over everything in great detail! The author, Elaine Hogan, did a really thorough job going over all things to do with ADHD.

I like how the author used real data and from the very beginning, she defined what ADHD is. She gave examples of famous people who were diagnosed with ADHD to connect with the readers and shed light on the disorder- that’s it’s not an impairment. On the contrary she shows how many people reached great achievements having ADHD.
Something I really like that the author did was debunk some of the top myths of ADHD. Many people,
Especially parents, have a guilt trip thinking they did something wrong or they have bad parenting skills- which is not the case.
The author proceeds to list symptoms based on child’s age which is good for readers to dive into for specific information for their child.
The author then goes on to explains how to get tested for ADHD and what options you have to help “ease” the symptoms of ADHD (medical or natural).
Furthermore, the author gives examples of real-life case studies, which again is great for readers to relate to. It offers excellent and well thought out ideas for parents to work with their children and how to help children who are in school dealing with ADHD.

It goes over and gives examples of diets, sleep habits, hygiene and exercises to help.
Another great aspect of the book is that it gives guidance on helping their child with social skills and other functional skills.
She also included a whole chapter on dealing with emotions which is a huge concern with people who have ADHD.
Lastly, It closes with helping you as a parent or the patient of the disorder, deal with it all as well as setting up your child/you for future success.

I see no reasons to give this book anything less than 5 stars. It’s a quick read and again very helpful and informative. It’s also based on facts and research (which she lists as references in the last 20 pages! This can help everyone understand ADHD even if they do not personally have ADHD or a child with ADHD.

This is an important guide for parents and teachers to better understand ADHD.

As a public school teacher for over 27 years, I can attest to the validity of Elaine Hogan's statistics in her book The Frazzled Parent. She states that almost 10% of US children ages 2-17 have been diagnosed with ADHD. My own classroom experience supports this statistic. For any parent, a diagnosis of ADHD can be scary. The unknown usually is.

With this book, Hogan offers what parents want and need: information to guide their child beyond the diagnosis.
Hogan addresses many aspects of ADHD, including treatment options, communicating with your child's teacher, and dispelling misinformation. She explains first what ADHD is -- and what it is not. She includes causes, case studies, screening questions, treatment, and family support. Every component is explained clearly and with great detail. The information in no way overwhelms the reader, the last thing a concerned parent needs.

This book is an excellent resource for teachers and for parents. So many topics are covered extensively, including strategies to improve aspects of daily life. As both a parent and a teacher, I am a fixer. I want specific information, not vague theory. While there is no easy fix to ADHD, there are ways to help the student navigate adolescence successfully.

Every teacher should read this book, as should every parent whose child has received a diagnosis of ADHD. Knowledge is power, and in this case knowledge is critical and a necessary step toward thriving.

Highly recommend for parents of children with ADHD

This book showed amazing insight into ADHD in children and how parents can work with their children to help instill improvement in behaviors. The tips provided were explained well and fully helped me to understand ADHD in children. I was especially thankful for the mention of differences in behavior between boys and girls. I feel like that isn’t talking about enough, so I really appreciate it because many girls could be overlooked otherwise.
The author discusses multiple important topics, such as working WITH children instead of trying to force behaviors, how to use rewards to motivate children, building and maintaining relationships. It also discussed the importance of ensuring kids are eating well, getting a good night's sleep, keeping up with hygiene, and getting exercise.
I also appreciated the section on how parents can take care of themselves while working with their children. It can be difficult and frustrating raising a child with ADHD, so self-care is important.
Overall, the explanations about ADHD and behaviors children may display were great ways to teach parents about it and how to work with their kids to improve behaviors. I definitely suggest parents of children with ADHD read this book

A much-needed companion to parents raising successful children with ADHD

The author does an excellent job of attacking the topic of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) from every angle necessary. The book provides a comprehensive view of ADHD, and what parents and others need to know. Unlike other books on the topic, the author considers the needs of both the parent and the student.

Crucial to rearing children is the parent’s ability to not take challenges personally, to find solutions, and to project confidence. In the book, it is said this way: “This story serves as a reminder that while parenting a child with ADHD can be challenging, it can also be a journey of growth and self-discovery.” Where other resources talk only of the child, this book also builds up the parent.

Bravely and honestly, Hogan discusses the importance of executive age, the diagnosis, the importance of having a routine, life skills, self-care, and making friends. The text seems to walk beside parents so that they know they are not alone.

The book is well-researched and resourceful. The chapters are full of humility, knowledge, and humor. Beyond self-help, The Frazzled Parent is a must-read for any parent, grandparent or teacher loving a child who exhibits behaviors related to ADHD.

As a former pre-teen suffering from ADHD, reading this book was like talking to my saving grace. ADHD caused me pain, turmoil, and challenges beyond comparison. Now, my husband also suffers from ADHD, and what he went through in school, the struggle is real.

I appreciated the work and research it took to write this book. Even though the target audience is parents, teens can benefit from reading this book alongside their parents or guardians. Nobody deserves to encounter the symptoms of ADHD, but having a companion and guide to help along the way makes the journey so much easier and better. Elaine Hogan did an excellent job presenting all the information in 19 steps. Honestly, I was a little critical at first, but as I read the detailed descriptions of each action, I started to feel at ease, filled with a glimmer of hope.

This book is a fluid read. Every chapter, step, explanation, and reference is connected beautifully so families can easily apply these steps to help their children power through and even conquer ADHD. The book is exceptionally well-edited and well-written. It is accustomed to the target audience excellently. For these reasons, I am giving a total five star rating.

The Frazzled Parent

Frazzled Parent is a good title for what we feel as parents and grandparents of ADHD children. I am a grandparent and need the words of this book to reassure me that we are not alone. We feel like it is so daunting a task to be on alert all the time with our children who seem to be one step ahead or triggered by things that did not cross our minds. This book reminds us of the little, yet big, things we can do to calm the seeming chaos. The larger-than-life emotions felt and emitted by our children are real. We all need the skills to deal with them, to know empathy, and still grow. After attending therapy, my daughter was also reassured that what she was doing was just what her ADHD child needed. Just as this book reminded us to take care of ourselves, those little words of encouragement and self-care were so important. Sometimes talking face to face is not so easy. Reading this book gives that face-to-face, enlightening, and reassuring us. The author provides the skills so that we can care for our precious children, help them grow, and ensure them with life readiness.

I do not suffer from ADHD, nor am I a parent to a child with the condition, but I know several peers in college who live with it and came across this book while trying to learn more about it.

The Frazzled Parent has something for everyone. There are statistics, case studies, and updates on current research made readable and engaging with visual aids, activities, and list formats. Hogan detangles the convoluted jargon and stigmas typically used to villainize the mental disease or parents helping children through it, for instance, emphasizing how the diagnosis also comes hand-in-hand with “curiosity and creativity” (for example, Leonardo da Vinci is among historical figures widely speculated to have had ADHD).

I also recommend this book because of the personal touch to the narrative, the empathy that shows the author’s personal experience and passion for the subject. Her message to not neglect your own health when trying to care for others (“You need to put the oxygen mask on yourself first before helping your child”) stood out to me and extends past the world of ADHD to helping anyone going through a difficult time.

If you’re seeking a book that can help you understand ADHD and guide you on how to navigate the disorder, then you might find this book to be a treasure trove of information. The author has done an exceptional job of presenting the information in a well-organized and thoughtful manner, making it easy to apply to daily life. The book provides relatable examples throughout, to show how individuals with ADHD can achieve success and emphasises empowering parents to support their children’s ADHD journey. It highlights the importance of community and connection and explains how ADHD can be an asset when properly understood and embraced.
In summary, this book is an excellent source for anyone who wants to gain a more nuanced understanding of ADHD, whether as a parent or someone personally affected by the disorder. Elaine’s informative and supportive approach offers valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities that come with it. It’s a must-read for anyone who wants to navigate the complex world of ADHD with confidence and compassion.

The Frazzled parent was a very insightful read. It was straight forward and well written. The author communicated her knowledge and research in a relatable way that felt easy to understand even to someone not familiar with the ins and outs of a medical diagnosis such as this.
As a parent with young school age kids, I really benefitted from the no judgement, conversational style the author uses. The concise lists are straightforward and bring clarity while not undermining the complexity of the issue. The details have insight and explained directions to look into if you are questioning if your child (or anyone) might be affected by ADHD, and resources to help if you obtain a formal diagnosis from a clinician.
The author recognizes pain points for parents in this situation and clearly address them in ways that routines and strategies things feel accessible.
Most of all I appreciate the authors ability to destigmatize something that is very common in our society. I highly recommend this book to parents of young children suspected of experiencing the affects of ADHD.

This book was a good read. The instructions and descriptions were easy to read and easy to follow. While I don’t have a kid myself, the book explains in detail what to do. And it’s written well that I don’t feel overwhelmed by the information that is presented. Each chapter focuses on the steps you need to take in taking care of a kid with ADHD. While a quick read it still showed me how to adapt and overcome if I have a child with the disease. Key highlights of the book were the fact that ADHD is a stressful thing to work with in a child, and it showed easily how to do it yourself and what essential steps you need to take when dealing with the disease, from bullying to simple scheduling of a kid’s day so that he or she could get some structure in life and also reduce the effects of the disease. It also goes in-depth with self-care, which is always essential when dealing with special needs children.

I found this book while trying to find a book my friend can use. He has a young child whom he suspects might have ADHD and wanted my advice, as I was diagnosed myself, albeit much later in life. I am definitely not an expert on the subject, so I thought I’d look for something that might help steer him in a more cohesive and professional direction. I really enjoyed this book because it’s a very accessible guide to help parents navigate a child that has this condition. There were plenty of things, such as myths about ADHD that I myself didn’t even realize I believed. The book has many examples and what I enjoyed the most was case studies to help get solutions and methods across for the parent that wants to do the best for their kid. I recommended this book to my friend and I really believe it will help him get some answers to what he can do to best help his kid.

The book offers some useful tips, but it makes several assumptions that limit its practicality. It seems written for parents who either stay at home or have a significant amount of time to implement its strategies. It also assumes the parent does not have ADHD themselves and is managing only one child.

As a parent with ADHD, I found parts of the book redundant and, at times, overwhelming. Instead of feeling supported, I ended up feeling more frazzled. While there are a few helpful and easy-to-apply ideas, most of the advice is fairly basic and not much different from what’s already widely available.

If you already have a foundational understanding of routines, work with a counselor, or have supports like an IEP in place, this book may not offer much new insight. Parents who also have ADHD may benefit more from resources specifically designed with their challenges in mind.

An Invaluable Resource for Teachers

If you are a teacher of a child with ADHD, I highly recommend reading this book. The author provides a thorough comprehension of how to support these children by sharing a range of techniques, which include: developing healthy habits, managing emotions, improving social skills, and implementing a reward system, among others. One unique aspect of this book is its focus on building self-esteem and confidence in ADHD students. Hogan emphasizes the importance of recognizing and celebrating the strengths of these students, rather than just focusing on their challenges. This approach can have a profound impact on their academic and personal success. Teachers will find these strategies to be incredibly helpful in their interactions with ADHD students!

Perfect for parents with ADHD themselves

As a woman with ADHD who wasn’t diagnosed until my 20s after I graduate from college, I still struggle with my own ADHD and often have a lot of anxiety about regulating myself AND helping my child regular their ADHD and emotions.
Not only was this book enlightening from a parenting perspective, it was also healing to my own inner child! Chapter 6 (about dealing with emotional hypersensitivity) was especially helpful and I found myself getting emotional as I saw the parallels between my adult self, my younger self, and my child.
I would absolutely recommend this to parents with ADHD themselves or for anyone looking to increase empathy and understanding for their child with ADHD.

I had high hopes for this book, partly because of the title. I am indeed a frazzled parent, with a pre-teen ADHD child. The content, however, often sounds as though it was written by AI. Lots of repetition of obvious points: yes, it is important for a child to learn organization, self-control, etc., etc. Even the stories meant to humanize the subject sounded made-up to me. And goodness, while technically potty training is a "pre-teen" topic, the term "pre-teen" usually means 10-12. Perhaps this would be useful for someone brand new to the topic of ADHD, but I would instead recommend the work of Edward Hallowell.

One of the worst things is that there are places in the book where you are directed to pause and write a review! I have never seen such a thing before.

"The Frazzled Parent" by Elaine Hogan is a game-changer for parents dealing with a pre-teen with ADHD. The book is full of helpful tips and tricks to navigate our fast-paced, short-attention-span world. The author covers 19 essential skills that parents need to teach themselves and their kiddo to make life easier.

What I loved about this book is how relatable it is. The author shares her own experiences, which makes it so much easier to connect with. Plus, it's written in a super-friendly tone, so it's a breeze to read.

If you're a parent feeling stressed or trapped, give "The Frazzled Parent" a go. It's an awesome resource to help your pre-teen with ADHD thrive.

I highly recommend this book to parents and teachers in particular, but also to anyone who suspects they might have ADHD themselves. I really appreciate the sympathetic way the author approaches a still-poorly understood subject, emphasizing that having ADHD is not the fault of the child nor the parents. I also appreciate that the Hogan described the differences in how ADHD manifests between boys and girls, which still is only beginning to be addressed. I also had never read a breakdown of ADHD signs and symptoms from preschool through middle school into high school and adulthood, which was fascinating. As a woman diagnosed with ADHD in adulthood, this book resonated with me a lot.

Great resource for parents and grandparents! Dealing with ADHD can be confusing and frustrating for the child, the parents, and even the grandparents. When my children were growing up, my son was diagnosed with ADHD but there weren’t a lot of resources to help us help him. Elaine Hogan’s book is an excellent resource. If you are still evaluating treatments, she covers the various types (music therapy, medication, behavioral therapies, behavioral modification, etc.). But the real gems are the “hacks” for helping your child acquire the skills to succeed in spite of ADHD. She covers potty training and social skills, over-stimulation and anger management.

I am a mother of 2 daughters with adhd one of which is preteen . I loved that I was offered to read this book. One of my children is a preteen and I love seeing different techniques on how to care for them and make their life easier. I love how this book not only teaches you techniques to use for them, but it also teaches you self-care and to take care of yourself as well. They also suspect that I have ADHD so it helps as a family and to remind myself not to forget me.

As the mother of a thirteen-year-old son with ADHD going through puberty, as well as, being a volunteer and tutor at his neurodiverse school, I contend that The Frazzled Parent is a godsend for parents and teachers. The book begins with a well-researched and dynamic chapter all about ADHD, including its causes and symptoms, then leads into chapters about treatment options, healthy habits, and parenting hacks (including a very in-depth guide to creating a successful rewards system). Hogan includes helpful and uplifting case studies, including the Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps and how he mastered his ADHD. She also details ways to improve social skills, deal with emotions and calm the chaos. As a parent, exhausted from trying to understand my son’s mind, advocate for him in the classroom and protect him from misunderstanding and prejudice, I greatly appreciated the chapter “don’t forget YOU matter, too” and a reminder of the necessity and value of self-care. Elaine Hogan definitely did her research. The Frazzled Parent is very well organized and easy to follow with clear guidelines, bulleted lists, bold-faced key elements and a helpful glossary of terms. Overall, this book is highly effective as well as validating and comforting. The Frazzled Parent is the perfect book to help get the information, tools, and support to parent and teach teens with ADHD.
