David A. Carter has bugs on the brain. Pop-up bugs, to be precise. Popular author of a series of insect-rich books, including Jingle Bugs and Bed Bugs , Carter is a masterful paper engineer. His latest holiday extravaganza takes a traditional Christmas song and turns it positively buggy. On each of the 12 days of Christmas "my true love" gives a new, festive creepy crawler--leaping, lurking, or popping right out of the box. By the fourth day, we're up to "four Snowflake Bugs, three Sneaky Bugs, two Cuckoo Bugs, and a Fruitcake Bug in a pear tree." Now if that's not true love... Young pop-up enthusiasts will revel in the silly six-legged critters Carter creates. Decked out in antlers, tutus, and tinsel, these bugs are definitely set for the season. Unlike the once-opened gifts of Christmas, these pop-up packages bring enjoyment over and over again. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

This has been a favorite since my daughter was a toddler. We read this book very slowly - starting on Christmas Day with the first bug, and adding a bug every day until we get to the end. It's fun and sweet.

I love author David A. Carter's pop-up Bug series, this one included. The pop-ups are engaging, increasing in complexity as the numbers increase. The illustrations are whimsical fun. Borrowing the "12 Days of Christmas" carol is a great framework and besides counting, kiddos are exposed to shape and color examples as well.
My T is only 10 months but she gets SO excited about reading this book. She loves all the pop-ups, especially the big tree at the end. I have the Halloween book as well, and hope to pick up a few more by this author.
I love a good pop-up book, and some of the pop-ups in this book are worth seeing, but I didn't enjoy this version of the Twelve Days of Christmas and can only imagine that it would be really difficult to read out loud.
On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me...
I've purchased almost every title in this series and have yet to be disappointed by any of them. My 8-year old son requests to read them again and again and again, and now that he's reading on his own - likes to read them to himself.
Now that he's older, he is also very careful not to tear the pop-ups, but I've got to admit that there are a few titles we've bought more than once. He probably got his first pop-up book at the age of two - and although the pop-ups are quite sturdy and made for little hands to enjoy - he did manage to tear a few of them. I think this is inevitable if you want to introduce your child to pop-up books at an early age, and since the pop-up books in this series are reasonably priced - I've been more than happy to replace the ones he was a little "too hands-on" with!
What do we like about the pop-ups? Each one is a work of art - you are never disappointed when you turn the page. The pop-ups are cute, colorful, creative, and most of all - FUN. The accompanying text on each page is also good - funny rhymes, silly sayings, and sometimes even a sing-a-long song.
Of all the pop-up books we own (and we probably have fifty or more - some dating back to the thirties and forties) these are the ones we enjoy the most. We've also bought several to give as gifts to my son's friends.
This particular pop-up book would make a delightful present for any child in your life. My son and I have read it literally dozens of times together. We like to sing the song as we read, substituting bugs for turtle doves and partridges, of course! There is simply no way to not be impressed by the pop-ups. Each is so unique and creative - I would love it if this guy designed pop-up ornaments!
Our other favorites are those by Robert Sabuda & Matthew Reinhart and there are also some excellent Harry Potter & Star Wars pop-up books if you're a fan of either of those series.
Another fabulous pop-up from David Carter. Our first exposure was with Jingle Bugs, so this was a fun one too with the added benefit of having one of my son's favorite songs as its base. He tried to sing it, but I ended up taking over on many of the later verses because they were really hard to make work in the melody. Didn't matter- it was a hit!
This is an absolute favourite in our family. The kids love the popup pictures and the funny bugs! We read it every Christmas until they were teenagers!
