That Winter by Jeremy Mark Lane- winter is one of my favorite months so when given the choice of a free audio book I selected this book. Starts out with the descriptions of the winter and how different it is from other seasons. One year Gabriel, a reporter with interviews barely noticed the cold at all. He was in a diner and noticed a woman who walked in, with her mother. Lucy had tracked him down and left a message at his dorm. They make plans for a movie, after meeting her father-the next night. Love the descriptions of the places they traveled through. 3 weeks they drove all over the towns and talked to one another in person or on the phone. He was in love with her until that one December night. They were to meet at the diner. She told her how she'd not be good for him and got up to leave. All he could think of was her lips. He let her go but she was always in his heart... Short story that you will remember as if it was 900 pages long because there was so much to the story. B0052GOZXK
I downloaded this book from Audible, and listened to "That Winter" straight through.
This is the love story of two young people who meet in a small town. It unfolds as a "slice of life" and walks us through a time that separates one winter from all others in a young man's life.
What presents at first as a simple storyline is anything but. The author's talent with imagery is impressive, and provides the reader with visual descriptions that pull you in. Mr. Lane almost creates a kind of melancholy fog in this story, as if to warn the reader to prepare themselves.. someone is going to lose.
When Audible announced the author as narrator, I groaned. I listen to books on Audible frequently, and can only think of a few authors who are successful narrators. Mr. Lane did an excellent job.
This book was much more than I was expecting, and is appropriate for the young adult or adult audience.
