Rate this book
Introducing English Grammar describes and explains English grammar in the light of current usage. It is aimed at Norwegian students of English in teacher education and students who take an introductory course in English grammar at college/university level. The main aims of Introducing English Grammar • to alert learners to the close ties between grammatical form, meaning and communicative function • to give learners good tools for improving their English • to introduce learners to grammatical terminology so that they can make use of grammar notes from dictionaries and other sources • to familiarize learners with the basic clause structure of English In the selection and presentation of topics an important consideration has been to help learners improve their English. In order to increase students' language awareness and to warn against typical "Norwegian-English" errors, there are frequent comparisons between English and Norwegian as well as practical "Notes for learners". The general approach is descriptive, but readers are given clear advice on how English should be used in order to be considered "correct" in more formal contexts. A separate chapter is devoted to grammar in discourse. The terminology and the grammatical approach used in Introducing English Grammar are compatible with the major reference grammars of English.
