"Speaking Sandals" by Yendluri Sudhakar is a book of real life stories of Madigas. They are a large, historically marginalized community (Scheduled Caste) in Southern India known for traditional leatherwork, tanning, and rope-making, but now often agricultural laborers. While the book is told through the author himself through stories who is discovering his caste identity, the character is actually a personal depiction of the author’s own father.
The narrative gets deeper into the complexities of local politics, internal conflicts, showing how these struggles directly impact their livelihood. It also describes turning points, such as how the British provided a lifeline during times of extreme crisis of drought, how they helped them when others didn't even touch them and the first ever divorce in their community. Some stories like Does food Have a Caste ?, My Mother fed us clay brought me to tears.
