Musique !

I very much liked Rubio and Efa's comics biography Monet: Itinerant of Light, a few years ago, and I enjoyed almost as much their biography of Belgian born Romani-French jazz guitarist and composer Django Reinhardt, certainly one of the greatest guitarists of all time, who died at the early age of 43. This comics bio is fine, maybe a little cartoony, but colored beautifully, focusing on his early life. Maybe since it was kid-oriented it featured a bear and monkey that traveled with their family. It's too short, really, but a good introduction to his early life, and then there's a written bio that follows it (though it repeats some of the same information) with photographs, and references. The idea is to create an entertaining tale of his "gypsy" life. There's not much more than mentions of the music, however, one of the limitations of a comics bio.
The double entendre of the title: He was lightning fast as a guitarist, but he also badly burned his hand in a fire, recovering full from that (and the early threat of an amputation).
Here is a 9o second YouTube video, just a taste of Django playing with that also famous jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli, whom I heard in the late eighties when he was in his late seventies in Ann Arbor:
Django Reinhardt, the famous (and infamous) guitar prodigy gets his own bio-comic (is that a thing?), telling the story of his early years, when he lost the use of one of his hands. In a way it's a bit of a love story between Django and his brother.
It's an excellent idea to pick a period out of Reinhardt's life, making it easier to focus on what was the biggest turningpoint in his life.
The art is great, too, fantastic use of colours.

A heart warming comic that tells the origin story of the
[What I liked:]
•I’d never of Django Reinhardt before this comic, & he truly has a wonderful life story. The comic tells it with engaging emotions (& also funny bits, like the pet bear & monkey!).
•I appreciate how the creators of this comic wove the popular music of the times into the story. It really added to the feel of setting.
•The afterword contains a short biography of Django with a lot of interesting info & anecdotes, & some wonderful photos. It’s clearly a well researched book.
[What I didn’t like as much:]
•I was hoping to see more of Django’s success & career after his recovery. Where the comic ends is a good stopping place thematically, yet it feels like his story was just getting started.
Paydirt. I've never really been interested in the story of Django Reinhardt, the early jazz guitarist, but that's because I never knew it. I'll never be a fan of his output – Sheik of Araby sounding like an incoherent mess to my 4/4-bludgeoned ears, and certainly not Arabic – but this book is a biography of the man behind the myth, the boy that became a legend – or, as the introduction says several times, a god. We start with him as a youth slipping into cafes to hear the dance quartets and other musical artistes, until youthful vigour and malaise combine to make it known a banjo might improve his mood. It did more than that – but then came the fire that nearly caused amputation of his limbs, a failure of a marriage, and so much more.
This comic book retelling of it all isn't a classic – it's not the most visually attractive thing, it shows his artistic progression just by dropping the names of the tracks he rehearses on his gypsy caravan stoop, and it has some annoyingly disposable Greek chorus members (apart from the female one, she's gorgeous). Plus it has a really weird thing of dropping a bear and monkey into things. Plus it's only an origins story. Oh and also plus, it gives a little too much time to an essay form of what we've just seen, after the bluntest possible ending, which kind of embellishes and kind of negates the artistry and crafty authorial invention of the main part. But I still think this is a presentation of Django's youth that will appeal to his many fans, and with me as evidence I know for a fact it successfully raises interest in the narrative of this man's life where it never previously existed. A strong four stars.
With beautiful artwork and powerful storytelling, this graphic novel brings the story of Django Reinhardt to life in a captivating way.
According to Wiki 'Jean Reinhardt known by his stage name Django Reinhardt was a Belgian-born Romani-French jazz guitarist and composer. He was the first jazz talent to emerge from Europe and remains the most significant.'
He was incredibly talented and in his lifetime played both banjo and guitar. I didn't know anything about him before reading this graphic novel and as I read I was amazed by the adversity Django went through and despite this he still managed to develop his considerable talent. It is an inspirational story and all the more enjoyable because of the artwork.
This novel focuses on his childhood and early career and it would be great if there are future volumes exploring the rest of his life, especially how he survived WW2 but this is an excellent volume and well worth reading.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher Papercutz for an advanced copy of the musical biographical graphic novel.
One of the saddest phrases in any language has to be what if. What if this, What if that. In the case of this graphic novel, what if a mother didn't save and scrimp to buy her son a musical instrument to keep him out of trouble. What if Django Reinhardt had never been heard. All the early jazz guitarists who would never have been influenced by Django's playing like Charlie Byrd and Wes Montgomery. All those songs lost, his contribution to music never known. Thankfully we don't have to wonder what if, as shown in this biographical graphic novel about the influential jazz guitarist as he grows into the showman he would become. Django: Hand on Fire written by Salva Rubio and illustrated by Efa show the young artist from birth, to his discovery of his ability, from pain to overcoming adversity.
Born in 1910 to a Roma family of entertainers, Django and his brother grew up poor in a locale known as "The Zone" outside of Paris. A troublesome boy, Django was moving fast from mischief to delinquency when the gift of an American banjo changed his life and musical history. Django was a prodigy, playing things he would hear only once, and mastering difficult techniques and songs with repeated practice. Soon he was playing with the best musicians in the most high paying bands, which Django would gamble away quite regularly. One night a fire nearly killed his wife and unborn child, and maimed his left arm, possibly destroying his burgeoning musical career.
The book is beautiful both story and art. Yes the graphic novel ends, at the start of his musical fame, but the key parts of his story are told, which is the most influential. The story moves well, never bogs down and shares a lot of information and history in the books small size. The end note essays are quite informative, with more about Django, his influence on music and a sketch of his life until his early passing. The art is very distinctive and really accompanys the story well, with a lot of detail.
A very good introduction to the master musician. The story might be a little much for young readers, but older and more mature ones, especially if they enjoy music and guitar will have no problem and will enjoy. A fascinating life full of many what if moments.
A beautifully drawn, very well researched telling of the early life of Django Reinhardt. We are presented with the known details of his early life and musical influences through sensitive, beautifully watercolored drawings that present us with a detailed and evocative portrait of life in "la Zone." The attention to specifics of period dress and setting bring the reader into vivid contact with a long-gone era.
Although there are poetic liberties taken with the details of Reinhardt's biography, Hand on Fire does a wonderful job of maintaining fidelity to what we know of the great man's earliest years while still maintaining the mythical resonance of what is essentially a superhero origin story: a Manouche banjo prodigy suffers a catastrophic injury following a caravan fire. Nevertheless, due to his boundless belief in his talent and the support of his family, he was able to overcome his injury and emerge as one of the towering masters of the defining instrument of the 20th century, and one of the most influential musicians of all time.
This is a lovely first volume of what promises to be an excellent biography of the great Django Reinhardt. It should appeal to lovers of jazz as well as the general BD audience. Includes an introduction by Thomas Dutronc and a contextual essay by the author. Highly recommended.
First published in French as Django Main de feu, this is availble in English for the first time.
A brief biography of the childhood of Django Reinhardt, the Romani-French jazz guitarist who was a musical sensation in both Europe and North America and influenced musicians all over the world. Readers learn how this hard scrabbled, undisciplined kid who grows up in a itinerant Roma troupe found his talent playing banjo and nearly lost everything in the catastrophic fire that damaged his foot and his hand. This injury caused him to switch to the guitar, where he achieved amazing international success. It is his discipline and determination that get him walking on his feet and excelling as a musician.
Salva Rubio's writing is straightforward and includes just the right amount of detail to keep readers wanting more. EFA's full-color artwork verge on cartoonish and will appeal to a wide range of ages - skewing from middle grades up through high school. The brevity and format may deter adult readers, who will also enjoy this graphic biography.
Be sure to find some footage of Django playing his guitar. Simply amazing!
Thank you to Papercutz and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Django, Hand on Fire by Salva Rubio is a historical graphic novel about a legendary prodigy musician. The story revolves around Django Reinhardt, who grew up in the early 20th century in a nomadic traveler family Belgium. He became known for his guitar-playing. But what will happen when a fire mutilates his left hand? Will he be able to resume playing at the same skill level or at all? According to the description, this book "features the passion and determination of the man who has always considered himself the greatest guitarist in the world."
Overall, Django, Hand on Fire is a wonderful historical graphic novel that would make the perfect addition to any curriculum involving historical figures. I have to admit that I had never heard of Django before reading this graphic novel. However, that did not hamper my enjoyment of this graphic novel in any way. In fact, I was happy to learn about a historical figure that I hadn't before. As a teacher, I can see many ways that this graphic novel could be taught in the classroom. For example, one could have book circles with each group focusing on a different historical figure. I did take 0ff 1 star, because there are some adult themes that would make this book more appropriate for high school than middle school. If you're intrigued by the description, or if you're a fan of historical graphic novels, I recommend that you check out this book when it comes out in February!
Trabaja a mano, artesanalmente.
When I found this book, I decided to read it for though I have listened to his music and have actually found a few older records of his. I have also found that many jazzes and a few rock guitarists look at his music as where to start and to become. The book opens with the story of his music and really how muscly everything came easy for him. It was not until a fire that would burn his left hand and left leg that he would need to work at just moving his fingers first then work to play the guitar once again. The book really goes into the struggles he was facing and how he overcame them. The first part of the book is done in a graphic novel type which was okay. Once you get towards the end you have an actual written story which I personally liked better. Either way, this is a very good story and really worth the read. I received this book from Netgalley.com I gave it 4 stars. Follow us at www.1rad-readerreviews.com
I thoroughly enjoyed this Django Reinhardt biography. Although I have loved his music for a while and knew aspects of his story, it was fascinating to read and see the colour and life in this cultural and historical backdrop. The book focuses mainly on his young life, but this is of course the significant period, leading to his later fame. In addition the detailed written account at the end of the novel with photographs, provide an excellent and enjoyable read. I loved the artwork for this graphic novel. The characters were depicted well and there was clarity on every page. All in all, an enjoyable and emotive read. Excellent.
When I read this, I could really tell there was a lot of care and attention put into creating this comic. The character and the character design of Django was multifaceted. Curious, not cautious, clever, quick thinking yet somewhat naïve. The illustrations were absolutely magical and I enjoyed the expressiveness of Django, Nin-nin, and others was conveyed well. This really brought me into the story. I also appreciated that this was an intense but short glimpse into a section of his life, rather than his whole life.
Django Reinhardt's early life told in graphic novel form. If you aren't familiar with Django, he's one of the first guitar greats. He was a child prodigy, playing professionally with adults by the time he was 10 or 11. He originally played banjo until a fire badly burned his hand leaving him without the use of a couple of his fingers. At that point he had to teach himself how to play again, this time on guitar.
I picked this comic up based on the cover alone, not knowing who Django Reinhardt was or his incredible yet tragic story. Reading through this comic has given be a basic understanding of his life but in such a beautifully drawn way that I am considering researching further into his life. The way it was drawn kept me hooked all the way through, it is a true beautiful biographical comic that catches us and doesn't let us go before the final point.
Note: I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Somehow they managed to make every character unlikable in this story, with king douche-canoe being Django himself. It tells us a sprinkling of history but doesn't explain why that history is important until after the story is told in an afterword. Pretty disappointing, even as someone who can read French and is well schooled in music.
Not being a musical person, I didn't hear about Django before. But the story was nicely illustrated and I enjoyed the additional clippings and history in the back.
Thank you # NetGalley and Papercutz for giving me the opportunity to read this.
