Really what does anyone expect from the muscle-bound character? Deep philosophy, profound views on life, a new religion? Of course he got into a bar fight.
A short story graphic novel which takes place shortly after the end of The Arrival DLC for Mass Effect 2, it introduces the character of James Vega and explains how he becomes connected to Shephard. There is essentially nothing at all to it.
me3 really treated the weight of the events of the arrival dlc too lightly, given the scale of death and destruction, and ultimately, actual real genocide. the fact that this comic exists and still does nothing to push that or have anything substantial to say is insane, having it instead be lighthearted fodder for a scuffle. this is a nothingburger of a comic featuring a character with no growth either. he's just there. we see how james gets to be shepard's warden while they're in prison, but it doesn't add anything else, when it should've at least given us a bit more background of the batarians and their views of shepard/humanity at large.
*I love the game, so I've been trying to read all the graphic novels so I can get background on the world.*
I love anything with James. Still feel that he is an underrated character. its interesting to think of how all the humans got flack for what Shepard did in the Arrival DLC, and the consequences of Shep's actions, even though it was needed and just James beating up batarians lol.
I really enjoyed reading this short-comic! Sure, it doesn't fill any kind of blanks in James Vega's background storyand it doesn't really develop his character a lot but it was entertaining enough for me and, most importantly, it showed how he came to know Shepard and how he first met him/her. That has to count for something xD It's set after the events that happened in Mass Effect 2's DLC "The Arrival", in which Commander Shepard had to make a difficult decision regarding a particular solar system (not going to spoil it xP). It's also set pretty much after the events in the "Mass Effect Paragon Lost" movie, so I'd recommend anyone to watch that movie before reading this comic, otherwise you'll end up kinda confused as to why James Vega acts the way he acts at the beginning.
It seems that the artists of the Mass Effect comic books have a hard time rendering the various beloved NPCs in such a way that they are recognizable beyond their trademarks - in this case, Vega's muscles and tattoos. Spacedad Anderson also looks weirdly young in some panels, while looking slightly more "realistic" in others. Not my fave out of the Mass Effect comics so far, but not the worst one either. The padding this adds to the overarching story of the Mass Effect Trilogy is minimal, but it does provide a bit of context.
As with Mass Effect: Incursion, Conviction isn't so much as story as a peek into the life of someone other than Shepard. Good art to go with the ME universe. Pass as a standalone, but recommended if you can get it combined with another ME book/comic.
Vega was never a character I really cared about, I pretty much ignored him in the games. This doesn't add too much to the backstory and is sort of pointless, but hey, it's a few pages, might as well read it.
Read this last night. Haven't finished the games or the novels, so I'm going to hold off rating this until I complete more stuff. I'm turningi into a fangirl.
After "Deception", everything is refreshing to read. I would usually give 3 stars for a comic like this, but the 4th star goes to Vega's good looks, which are non-existant in the game IMO.
