My reading pace and engagement level have been off for a while now due to something I’ve been going through so I was hoping this reread could be something that made me feel a sense of fun again, unfortunately, this didn’t quite do the trick.
This is the eighth in a series, there are references here to previous events but as you probably already guessed this isn’t a super complex novel so you can just jump in and easily feel up to speed.
I didn’t remember much from reading this as a kid, unfortunately it was even more surface level than I expected, none of the love interests really had a personality so the romances feel flat, there’s potential with the mom drama but it’s underexplored, and although the conflict makes sense (a rift between friends while vying for a Daytime Emmy) that conflict relies too much on avoiding a conversation.
Also this makes it seem like soap stars enjoy the same kind of acclaim and media attention as primetime and movie stars when even at the height of this genre (the 1980’s when this paperback released) that’s just not how it is, it’s a quieter, more niche stardom. This just ignored almost everything that’s distinct to soap opera fame and really didn’t get into the differences in their work either. What's the point of specifically having these teens be soap actresses if you weren’t going to run with all the things that make that a unique life experience and instead show the same basic kind of celebrity as any other story would?
