Cookbook Nook Mystery #12

Poaching Is Puzzling

Rate this book
In the cutthroat world of crossword solvers, Jenna Hart will have to decipher some puzzling clues to catch a killer . . .

The annual crossword puzzle contest has drawn contestants from near and far to Crystal Cove, and Jenna watches in amazement as puzzle-themed books fly off the shelves at the Cookbook Nook. Her aunt Vera is putting up a sizable cash prize, and no one is more surprised than Jenna to discover there’s bad blood between Vera and the prominent puzzle constructor who’s acting as master of ceremonies. And when the puzzle guru has his throat slit while he’s out hiking, the police instantly peg Aunt Vera as the culprit.

Jenna can’t stand by and watch her aunt take the fall. It’s been clear since the victim arrived that he had contentious relationships with a number of the contestants—even going so far as to steal puzzles from some of them and claim them as his own—and Jenna’s certain one of them is the killer. Trading puzzle solving for crime solving, she sorts through the convoluted clues and cryptic suspects, hoping to nab the guilty party before they decide she’s a problem they’ll solve with another murder . . .

Includes mouthwatering recipes!

A Cookbook Nook Mysteries written by Daryl Wood Gerber is one of the first cozy mysteries that I began reading many, many years ago. The latest, Poaching is Puzzling, brings a puzzling crew to the small, seaside California town where Jenna's favorite aunt is accused of murdering an old friend for stealing a puzzle that gave his career a much-needed boost. Decades later, a big contest shows up in town and Aunt Vera is running the competition. Big stakes. Winners and Losers. Tons of secrets. An editor with a keen eye for slashing things. A best friend who is angry that the man stole his beloved years ago. A protégé who sometimes knows more than the boss. And a colleague who's owed some money. Toss in a few surprise guests and it's a curious puzzle indeed. Jenna figures out the culprit just a little too late and almost becomes a victim herself. Enjoyed this one a lot - gained a huge new vocabulary too. Entertaining and makes for a lovely Sunday afternoon read.

This is the 12th book in the Cookbook Nook cozy mystery series. I have read several of the previous books, but I haven’t read the whole series and still definitely enjoyed this one. I will say it was a little slow to start, but once the story really got going I breezed through it. I enjoy puzzles although I am far from a crossword puzzle expert and as a crossword puzzle tournament was the theme it was fun. I especially liked all the times people would try to use “50 cent words” (seldom used words) or would go off with synonyms in conversation. It felt like a bit of a nerd heaven and I thought it seemed like a fun place to be. Jenna is enjoying the festivities until her aunt’s old friend is murdered and her aunt is the number one suspect. Of course she has to do some sleuthing to clear her name and she really does have a good knack of getting people to talk to her. But her aunt’s old friend wasn’t a very nice guy for all he was a famous crossword puzzle designer. Overall I gave this 4.5 stars rounded up for the great characters who really kept my interest.

I have enjoyed all of the Cookbook Nook Mystery series and this new story, Poaching is Puzzling, is a great addition. A crossword puzzle event in coming to Crystal Cove, California and everyone is gearing up. Jenna Hart and her Aunt Vera are getting in crossword theme books and items to get ready for the event at the Cookbook Nook Bookshop and the Cafe is hosting some of the events. Vera's old childhood friend Wesley is a famous crossword constructor and head of ceremonies. The two haven't seen each other much at all in forty years and Wesley is not the nicest person Vera would like to think he is. Evidently, he has made enemies because someone killed him while he was out on a night hike to listen for birds. Jenna puts her sleuthing skills to use to find her aunt's friend's killer. There are lots of possible suspects who Wesley mistreated and lots of alibis to check out. It is always fun to visit Crystal Cove and all the usual characters during the great weeks of events, but edgy to watch Jenna stick her nose where she is put in danger. Great series and new addition. I learned many new words and fun facts. Recommended for cozy mystery lovers with great sounding food and recipes included.
I received a copy for the purpose of an honest review. These are my thoughts only.

I love crossword puzzles. When I discovered the recently released book in the Cookbook Nook series Obviously, I couldn't miss this one. This is one of my favorite series, and its cast of characters is always delightful. It was a captivating plot that intensified when Jenna's aunt Vera is a suspect in her friend's murder who is a puzzle constructor. The crossword merchandise at the Cookbook Nook and the puzzle contest made the story fun to read. The list of potential suspects is long and intriguing. My guess as to the killer is hardly ever right but it was still exciting trying.

Thank you Beyond the Page Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC of this book. This was a honest review.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Jenna Hart has stocked her Cookbook Nook with a variety of puzzle-themed books, aprons, cookie jars, and other culinary items, for the large group of crossword puzzle fans who have come to Crystal Cove for an annual crossword puzzle tournament. Her Aunt Vera has a history with the event’s guest speaker “crossword designer extraordinaire” Wesley Preston but is keeping mum about the details. “A memory best forgotten.” That is until the man is killed and Vera is at the top of the suspect list.

Now Jenna has her own puzzle to solve. She has seen that the man doesn’t get along well with others with her own eyes including people in his own entourage. She has learned that the Cruciverbalist has no issue with stealing puzzles created by others and touting them as his own. She just needs to pull all the clues together to reveal the real killer, who is definitely not her Aunt Vera, but she has to be careful so that she is not permanently erased before she has a chance to do that.

What a fun theme for a cozy mystery! Readers get a behind-the-scenes look at designing crossword puzzles complete with some perfect words to use in each chapter heading. I may even try my hand a crafting a crossword or two.

All my favorite characters from the previous books are back. Jenna and Rhett are living in “wedded bliss”. Vera is very involved in the crossword event. She even donated a nice cash prize. Kate is cooking away and doing food demonstrations. Bailey keeps the Cookbook Nook running with a smile while Jenna and Vera are doing other things. Cinnamon is always busy trying to catch a killer but knows people just tell Jenna things they would never tell police. Tigger who sometimes acts more like a dog than a cat loves hanging out at the Nook on his kitty condo. Rook is always happy to welcome Jenna and Rhett at the end of their days and is thrilled to take walks on the beach. Ms. Gerber has created such genuine characters. As soon as you open the book it feels like you are visiting dear friends.

The mystery she wraps her characters in is quite puzzling, LOL. There are plenty of suspects, twists, turns, and moments of distraction, along with great clues for readers to follow. This all leads up to a very exciting ending as all the clues fall into place for Jenna at a most inopportune time. As the drama played out I found myself scooting closer and closer to the end of my seat. The guilty party was high on my personal suspect list but was still surprised and a little saddened when they were revealed.

I love that Ms. Gerber shares an abundance of recipes at the end of each book including Gluten Free Versions. It is always best not to read her books on an empty stomach. Her food descriptions will cause cravings, so be prepared.

Poaching is Puzzling is so well-written and well-plotted. It was fun and entertaining and I am so excited to see what the author comes up with next for her wonderful characters.

Poaching is Puzzling is the twelfth book in the series, featuring Jenna Hart and her Aunt Vera, co-owners of The Cookbook Nook and the Nook Cafe. In addition to plenty of references to actual cookbooks, a crossword puzzle tournament is taking place in this book which makes it even more fun. I enjoyed all the information about crosswords that are included as part of the story.

Jenna was looking forward to all the festivities for the tournament, but she soon has her hands full with an investigation into the murder of a prominent crossword puzzle designer who was the emcee of the event. There are several people with motives and who are acting suspiciously, but the Crystal Cove police seem to be zeroing in on Jenna's aunt. Jenna puts everything on hold to take a closer look at other possible suspects and clear Vera's name. I wish the police officers were as thorough and open-minded in their investigation as Jenna! If you're new to the series, the book works well as a standalone and there is a list of characters at the beginning you can refer to. Even though I've read several of the prior books, the list was a helpful review for me.

I really enjoyed this book, It's an entertaining cozy mystery with a great ending. Since the Nook Cafe is an important part of this series, there are several recipes at the back of the book that sound delicious. I received an advance copy of this ebook from NetGalley and Beyond the Page Publishing, but my review is voluntary and unbiased.

I enjoyed this book and I’ve followed the series since the first book. It’s a cozy mystery at its best.
Jenna owns a bookstore, the cookbook nook, and their small town is having a crossword festival/competition

Jenna’s mom is a talented crossword solver, burnJenna is shocked when it turns out that her mom knows the puzzle expert who’s emceeing the contest. It’s even worse for her when he’s found murdered and her mom is the main suspect. Jenna gets involved to solve the murder and clear her mom’s name.

Cute characters, nice small town backdrop, and an interesting plot. 4 stars.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed as in this review are completely my own.

Poaching Is Puzzling Earns 5/5 Puzzles … Clever & Engaging Gem!

It’s a happy dozen with Daryl Wood Gerber’s “Poaching is Puzzling” from her Cookbook Nook Mystery series, and what a delightfully entertaining read with an annual crossword puzzle contest bringing to Crystal Cove not only solvers, but creators. One renowned puzzle creator, Wesley Preston, seems to have issues with Aunt Vera and she with him, so when he ends up dead, Jenna’s Aunt Vera is tops on the suspect list spurring Jenna’s interest and determination to uncover the truth. The truth is clouded by professional jealousy and theft of intellectual property, but the journey is engaging and the final arrest is a clever surprise … then some mouthwatering recipes for entrees, snacks, and desserts with a few gluten-free versions.

Disclosure: I received an ARC from Beyond the Page thru NetGalley. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.

I've been wanting to read a book by Darly Wood Gerber for quite a while now and I am so glad that I finally got the chance to do so. This book is witty, charming, educational, sincere, heartwarming, engaging, and just downright fantastic. Even though this is the twelfth book in the series, I didn't find myself lost or confused by any means. She writes in a way that I was easily able to picture the quaint little town in my mind's eye without any issues.

All of the characters are fully fleshed out with personalities to match. I loved all of the family and friend groups. The bickering between some of the characters was funny and reminded me of characters that were just like actual people and not someone made up. It made me feel like they were all real and I could picture any one of them coming through my door and having a conversation. This book has a real authentic feel about it.

I loved the mystery, and this is the first time I have read a cozy with crossword puzzles as its theme, but I really enjoyed it. I learned a lot of new words and I was happy to see I wasn't the only one who enjoyed puzzles, mysteries, and big words.

I highly recommend this book and I myself cannot wait to go reading the rest of the series to be able to catch up. What an enjoyable experience I had.

Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher, and Daryl Wood Gerber for the ability to read and review this book. All opinions are my own and are completely honest.

I’ve sadly missed a few books in this series, since the last one I read, but it was easy to pick up Poaching is Puzzling without feeling like I was missing anything. Daryl Wood Gerber immediately immerses you back – or for the first time – into the world of Jenna, Aunt Vera and the Cookbook Nook. Just like with Sifting Through Clues, I really loved the concept of this bookstore that’s all about cookbooks, culinary fiction, and food (as further evidenced by the yummy Nook Cafe next door). Jenna is a great protagonist who draws you in and engages your attention, and the whole ensemble cast of supporting players are equally endearing.

In Poaching is Puzzling, the author combines this fun bookstore with something else I love – crossword puzzles! It was fun to see some tongue-in-cheek references to the most overused crossword clues/answers, and I had to chuckle because for the most part the reason I even know those words at all is thanks to doing puzzles lol. In fact, Daryl Wood Gerber does a great job here of finding a balance between honoring & respecting the crossword puzzle world and also not taking itself too seriously. The words and definitions that begin each chapter added to the overall atmosphere of the book too, though the elevated vocabulary of so many of the puzzlers did get a bit tedious before it was over. For instance, I don’t know many people who use the word cruciverbalist in everyday conversation but it came up a lot in this book.

The mystery is its own puzzle to be solved, of course, and the parallels between solving this murder & creating a crossword puzzle were not lost on me as I read the book. The true culprit was indeed on my radar but so were almost half a dozen other suspects, and sometimes it did feel like realizing one of the intersecting words you’ve filled in must be wrong because those letters are just not adding up. The author is definitely skilled at crafting a plot that keeps readers guessing, and I had fun trying to solve it along with Jenna – especially with Aunt Vera being under the microscope in this one!

Bottom Line: Poaching is Puzzling by Daryl Wood Gerber is an enjoyable addition to this popular cozy mystery series! Not only will it test your sleuthing skills and hone your vocabulary, but it will also whet your appetite for the delicious food served up on its pages. A bevy of cookbooks will cross your path too … and may even end up in your Amazon cart before it’s over. Charming and entertaining, this is another must-read from this author!

This was my favorite Cookbook Nook Mystery yet (even though, honestly, I've loved them all!) Daryl Wood Gerber has created amazing characters that-- at this point-- truly feel like family. Even if this is your introduction to the series, you'll feel right at home from the very first page and will immediately want more. The crossword competition provided a great backdrop for this story, with a bevy of suspects that kept me guessing whodunnit (and changing my mind every time I thought I had it figured out) through the entire book.

The included recipes look AMAZING, and I can't wait to try them out-- I'm tempted to throw a party just for an excuse to make a ton of appetizers (but does one really need an excuse to make a ton of appetizers?! Asking for a friend)

I hope this series never ends-- I can't imagine a life without Jenna, Vera, and the Cookbook Nook (not to mention Tigger and Rook!!) and never get tired of spending time in Crystal Cove. I can't wait for the next one!!

Crosswords, cooking and cross-examinations are all wrapped up in this delightful mystery that once again brings the best characters out to play! Jenna, Bailey, Rhett and Tito as well as Aunt Vera and of course the police are all on top of things when things go awry at the Crossword Convention! The characters are so realistic and quirky that you just want to find the small town that they reside in and head for a visit yourself. This book is no exception to that rule! Add in the depth of the plot on this mystery and you'll have yourself hours of fun while learning new words for things! My favorite new word is cruciverbalist! Now if I can only figure out a way to work that into an everyday conversation! As always this series is fun to read and left me with something new to think about! I can't wait to see what the author cooks up for us next in this series!

Puzzles, contests and murder are all part of the wildest week in Jenna Hart's bookstore! When her Aunt Vera is framed for the murder, of a master puzzlemaker, Jenna must do her best to solve the puzzle and the mystery!

I enjoy reading this series. Jenna is smart and has a fun group of supporting characters. I liked this one with the mystery is played out against a puzzle competition and the competitors are very clever.. Settle in and I guarantee you'll love this cozy mystery!

#PoachingIsPuzzling #NetGalley is a fantastic addition to this series.
I'm already a huge fan of this author, and Poaching is Puzzling is a witty cozy mystery that will appeal to many readers.
Crystal Cove is preparing for a crossword competition, and things get heated quickly when personalities clash.
Jenna's Aunt Vera tries to cool tempers down, but when someone is killed, Vera finds herself in the hot seat.
This book was unique, inventive, and the crossword puzzle competition seemed like a lot of fun.
I had fun learning all the different words, and have myself wanting to do a crossword puzzle.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book.
I'm happy to recommend this book to other cozy mystery readers.

Poaching is Puzzling is the 12th book in the Cookbook Nook cozy mystery series.
It is always a pleasure to return to Crystal Cove and visit with its inhabitants, in this book we find Jenna and Aunt Vera preparing for their annual crossword puzzle contest.
I really enjoyed the crossword puzzle theme, as a longtime lover of the puzzles, I love the idea of a city wide contest. I particularly enjoyed how there was information about the puzzles and puzzle makers dispersed throughout the book.

The mystery itself, is very well constructed, multiple red herrings are given before the culprit is revealed .. I was convinced I had it all figured out, I did not, and was shocked by the reveal.

I would recommend Poaching is Puzzling to any cozy mystery lover particularly those that love puzzles.

If you love quirky characters and a twisty plot with a plethora of murder suspects, Daryl Wood Gerber's Cookbook Nook Mysteries are for you. You don't need to have read any of the previous 11 in the series to enjoy Poaching is Puzzling because the author lists all of the characters in alphabetical order by first name, including a short statement of each's role, at the beginning of the book. And there are helpful references throughout to give you context.

What I particularly enjoyed about this book was the crossword puzzle theme. Not only is there a crossword contest held in Crystal Cove, there are also other puzzle-themed events, not to mention a wealth of information related to this very popular pastime. The obsessed competitors are also frequently heard displaying their encyclopedic (or should I say thesaurus-like) knowledge of synonyms and arcane vocabulary. For a word nerd like me, it was a lot of fun. Since the protagonist is proprietor of a culinary bookshop and cafe, you can also expect to have your taste buds tickled by some tempting treats, with recipes at the end of the book.

My review is based on a complimentary pre-release copy of the book.

I have yet to read a bad book in this series, and this one was no exception. I am not into crosswords, but this book made me want to take up the hobby. As someone who carried a pocket dictionary and thesaurus with me is through school, I especially appreciated all of the word research that went into this one and all of the synonyms peppered through the book.
Jenna has come a long way with her friends over the years. Seeing her and Rhett so happy is a perk in this book, but after 12 books watching the people of Crystal Cove grow and evolve together it just adds to the story. This time it’s not a friend of Jenna’s, but Aunt Vera that is murdered. Aunt Vera remains on the suspect list and with everyone that Jenna talks to the list just keeps growing. Aunt Vera asks for her help to take down whomever murdered her old friend, and who is Jenna to not help her aunt?
This one kept me on my toes, and as an avid reader the language used just made it even better. I judge a book on the characters and story. The story was good, with plenty of plot twists, and the characters just keep getting better. The new characters like Eva, Sunny, and Ulysses are all well developed and seeing Bailey, Katie, Pepper and Cinnamon and how they are thriving is an added bonus. I can’t wait for book 13! I did receive this book in the hopes I would review it, but all opinions are mine and mine alone.

Poaching is Puzzling is the newest entry in the long-running Cookbook Nook mystery series. This series is such a comfort series. I love the town of Crystal Cove and all the festivals that they hold. It sounds like a fantastic place to visit. This book centers around a crossword puzzle festival that the town is holding, with a puzzle to complete each day and prizes to win if you complete it with no erasures.

I can’t fathom completing a puzzle with no erasures. That’s beyond my skill set. But I loved all of the puzzle talk in this book. I think the process of creating a crossword puzzle is fascinating and I loved all of the information that the author contained within this story. I also thought the murder was well done. I had mixed feelings about the murder victim but I thought the process of figuring out the killer was full of twists and turns and held my attention throughout.

I thought the reveal was well done and everything was tied up nicely and made sense. I really enjoyed this book and love every visit that I get to make to Crystal Cove. This is such a fun series with great characters and I can’t wait to revisit this series as soon as the next book releases!

Jenna is happy with how crossword themed books are jumping.ofd the shelves, the annual crossword puzzle contest is starting off right. Her Aunt Vera has donated a large money prize which has all the players excited as well. They were even able to get a very prominent puzzle constructor to be master of ceremonies. Things are going well until the master of ceremonies is found dead murdered and left in the woods. Her Aunt had an argument with the man earlier the previous day making the police look at her as the main suspect. Jenna hates thinking what her aunt is going through and jumps into investigation mode. She soon realizes there is no shortage of suspects, it seems everyone has a reason to want the man dead. Follow along as Jenna searches for a killer, will she be able to figure out the clues or will the mans death remain a puzzle.

Poaching is Puzzling, Daryl Wood Gerber’s latest Cookbook Nook Mystery, is a fun addition to the series and I love the idea of a crossword puzzle tournament and a (gasp!) murder involving one of the participants! Wesley has quite a few enemies, so it’s no surprise that someone had it in for him, but it’s still quite a shock when Jenna and Rhett stumble upon his lifeless body during their morning hike. When her beloved Aunt Vera is looked at as a potential suspect, Jenna once again helps (unofficially, of course) the police discover the culprit. I couldn’t put it down, most likely because the books in this series always include several things I like in my cozies - a character list, recurring characters, continuing storylines, and yummy recipes. A+++

Pure pleasure.

Nice, refreshing and smart read. I enjoyed the characters, their relationships, and the puzzle storyline. There were happily married people, widows, hobbyists, and business owners.

The jigsaw puzzle storyline added some quirky dialogue which I found fitting and mostly funny.

I wonder if Gerber's first eleven books are equally as enjoyable. I do hope to find out.

This is giftable for all ages, and I would use this as transition book for teens to adult reading.

It's always great to pick up the latest Cookbook Nook mystery. I love the warm California world of sleuth Jenna Hart, and I can always count on consistency and true coziness from the pen of Daryl Wood Gerber. This series hasn't let me down, so far.

Poaching is Puzzling was pretty good. I am the latest addict to Wordle and Spelling Bee, so this installment, set in the surprisingly high-stakes world of crossword puzzle tournaments, crossword puzzle-building and cruciverbalism, hit close to home. I didn't even know what a cruciverbalist was before I opened this book, so imagine the education I got.

What a great read!

This is a series where I can dive right in and immediately reconnect with the fun crew of characters. Everyone is very unique which is often part of the charm of your classic, colorful cozy.

I really enjoyed the puzzle element. I like how prominently it was featured. Sometimes I feel like a book promises us a “theme” but barely mentions it. That was not a problem at all here. I also love that Jenna always mentions real cookbook titles throughout the book. I wouldn’t have minded a few more of those.

The mystery was well plotted and seemed plausible. I liked the number of suspects. Each one had a motive that seemed to fit. I appreciated all of the red herrings. People lied to Jenna and that rang true to me. I love Jenna, but she is nosy and not at all subtle. It seems realistic that people would bristle at her prying. This added a level of reality that grounded the story.

Jenna’s personal life is also progressing with each book. This is important in a long running series. You want to avoid the series becoming stale and this series is still nice and fresh!

I read an ARC of this book. I am voluntarily leaving a review. All thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own.

Returning to Crystal Cove is always a highly anticipated occurrence! Poaching is Puzzling, the 12th book in the Cookbook Nook series, provides another enjoyable, engaging, mystery to solve with Jenna Hart, her friends and family. Combine these much-loved characters with crossword puzzles and you have a winning combination!

This book finds us at Crystal Cove’s annual crossword puzzle contest, where many expert and novice crossword puzzle solvers and constructors have gathered to solve numerous types of puzzles, all leading to a large cash prize provided by Aunt Vera. It appears that the master of ceremonies and expert puzzle constructor, Wesley Preston, has a contentious history with many of the participants, including Aunt Vera. Unfortunately, his past catches up with him and he is found murdered on an early morning hike by Jenna and Rhett. Of course, Aunt Vera becomes a prime suspect in the murder, and it’s up to Jenna to clear her name.

This book is enjoyable for a variety of reasons – the characters are well-developed, and they are very “real” tackling day-to-day life while managing the drama around the contest and the murder. The setting is very realistic, with the description of the Cookbook Nook, other shops, restaurants, and proprietors so well-described you feel like you are in Crystal Cove in the midst of all the action. Friends Bailey, Katie, Tito, Cinnamon, ZZ, Jake, Pepper, Jenna’s dad Cary, Aunt Vera’s husband Marlon, to name a few of the characters we’ve met throughout the series, are all involved in the action and visiting with them is like seeing old friends. The construction of the puzzle contest is so intricately detailed that it is easy to get wrapped up in the contest and almost forget there is a crime to solve!

In addition to the characters and setting, the mystery/crime is so well-constructed that you are totally caught off guard when the culprit is revealed. Many of the puzzle contestants have a valid reason for murdering Wesley, and the opportunity for murder believable, that you almost wonder if this is a “Murder on the Orient Express” moment and all of them played a role in Wesley’s demise!

Lastly, the references to food are sublime. Not only do we get introduced to new wonders produced by Katie and Rhett, but also real cookbooks to look up, unique crossword-related kitchen paraphernalia, unique cheeses, and a multitude of recipes at the back of the book.

I can’t imagine a more perfect mystery – a murder that perplexes, crossword puzzles, recipes, and a town full of people with whom you wish you were good friends.

I highly recommend this series and will very much look forward to book 13 and many, many more!

Poaching is Puzzling by Daryl Wood Gerber is a diverting cozy mystery. We return to the scenic Crystal Cove, California where Jenna Hart and her Aunt Vera own the Cookbook Nook. The story is well-written with developed characters. This is a character driven series. Jenna is back as well as her Aunt Vera, her husband Rhett, Bailey, Kate, Cary as well as Tigger and Rook. I enjoyed the crossword puzzle theme for this story. There are daily crossword puzzles for the townspeople to solve, a crossword puzzle tournament, crossword themed merchandise (cookie jars for example), and the murder of a cruciverbalist (crossword puzzle designer). The death of Wesley Preston, a renowned crossword puzzle designer, puts Aunt Vera in the crosshairs of Chief of Police Cinnamon Pritchett. Aunt Vera asks Jenna to investigate. She knows that the crossword puzzle visitors and contestants will talk to Jenna because she speaks their language. There are multiple suspects in Wesley’s death. Wesley managed to antagonize several people in the days leading up to his death. Jenna asks questions, searches for helpful clues, and gets useful gossip. The whodunit can be solved before the reveal (the devil is in the details). The case is neatly wrapped up at the end (thanks to Jenna). I learned a couple of novel words while reading Poaching is Puzzling (like cruciverbalist and turophile) and I enjoyed the addition of the fifty cent words (my favorite type). There are details on how crossword puzzles are crafted along with the crossword puzzle trivia. I also learned about the different types of knives and their names (there is one for each type of cheese—soft, hard, smooth, and semi-hard). There is some repetition of minutiae (a pet peeve of mine). We get to spend time with the cutie Tigger and the clever Rook. I like that the author includes adorable furbabies in her books. I look forward to my next visit to Crystal Cove. Poaching is Puzzling is the twelfth A Cookbook Nook Mystery. It can be read as a standalone, but you will miss out on the background of the characters and how the couples came together. Poaching is Puzzling is a crossword centric cozy with clever conundrums, a slain cruciverbalist, enticing appetizers, luscious cheeses, a sparkly spirit staff, shrewd wordsmiths, and a triumphant tournament victor.

Wow, I learned lots from this book. I don't know how much of it will stick but the wordplay was delightful, not to mention all we learned about baking and knives. You'll also get insight into how difficult creating crossword puzzles might be, albeit I never imagined it being a competitive sport, so to speak. In between, lots and lots of talk about food, including the way to proof your dough, and more.

In other words, when not busy trying to figure out whodunit, you'll find yourself learning some pretty cool things, too. Like, cruciverbalist, which is the name for one who designs crosswords. Or what the figure of speech metonymic adage refers to. Hint, Pentagon is a metonymic. And, if you're a crossword addict, you'll probably find yourself reaching for a pencil to jot down all the short words and/or common and uncommon synonyms that are mentioned.

Of course, the murder itself is quite the puzzle. Who did it? Who, shudder, slit crossword designer Wesley's throat? As the suspects and their backstories emerged, I actually found that I felt sympathetic to each and every one of them, even the eventual culprit. The author does a superior job of fleshing them out as human beings, not just extras in the story. The regulars are, naturally, well-rounded and struck me as being people you might know and enjoy having as friends. Heck, even Tigger the cat and Rook the Lab emerge as personalities. In other words, it works well as a standalone.

Bottom line, an excellent, well-written read. Timely, too, as Wordle gets a mention during the gathering of word puzzle fans. Main character Jenna finds herself pulled into the investigation when her aunt is a potential suspect, not to mention she's just one of those people others find themselves telling things. Does she ultimately find herself in danger? Oh, come on. This is a cozy mystery. What do you think? And I loved every moment of the story.

You can't go wrong with this one if you enjoy mysteries, crosswords, or even just an excellent character driven story. Thanks #NetGalley and #BeyondThePagePublishing for letting me sit in virtually on the crossword competition. Loved the use of real book titles and the comments within recipes by characters.

I’m so glad to be back in Crystal Cove, California and the Cookbook Nook Mystery Series in Daryl Wood Gerber’s 12th book in the series, Poaching is Puzzling!

Crystal Cove is hosting the annual crossword puzzle contest, and Jenna Hart’s aunt Vera has offered up a sizable cash prize for the contest. They’ve stocked the shelves with puzzle-themed books and merchandise, and visitors have flocked to town for the big event. The Master of Ceremonies, Wesley Preston, is a well-known cruciverbalist (crossword puzzle designer), and he and Aunt Vera have been friends since childhood. But along with their decades-long friendship comes some bad blood, and Vera is overhead sparring verbally not long before Wesley is found dead.

Jenna can’t stand aside and let her beloved aunt take the fall for the murder rap, so she and her close-knit circle of friends jump in to investigate Wesley’s life and the people in town who also have an ax to grind with the puzzler.

As an English major, a crossword puzzle lover, and an avid Cozy Mystery reader, I absolutely loved this book. Not only did I learn a lot of new words relating to puzzles, but the mystery was filled with red herrings and plot twists to keep me entertained and guessing to the very end. Who knew there was such competition in the world of designing crossword puzzles? (The information the author shared about cruciverbalism was so interesting, I’ve a hankering to try my hand at designing a crossword….maybe cozy mystery themed?)

The author always keeps readers engaged in her books, including her other series, and I’m a longtime fan of hers. Each series has their own set of interesting characters, exactly suited to the themes of the books. The town is so well set up that I can instantly picture the scenery and the placement of all the businesses and Jenna’s home.

And don’t forget about the delicious recipes included at the end of the book! I’m not much of a cook, but I always find at least a couple of recipes to try. And I’ve started a list of the cookbooks mentioned in each book that look wonderful to add to my collection.

Thank you to the author and Cozy Mystery Review Crew for letting me read an advanced copy of the book. I'm happy to leave an honest review. I’m looking forward to the next in the series!
