Bought the first 6 volumes to reread them for Halloween 2024. The stories don't hit as hard as they used to, but then again when I first read these I was in fourth grade. Nevertheless, I'm enjoying myself! Sometimes, the nostalgia factor can't be beat.
Finished this in one sitting. It's not delivering as it delivered nung bata pa ako, maybe because I matured at narealize kong wala ng mas nakakatakot pa sa mga demonyo sa totoong mundo pero it's a good way to reminisce my childhood.
Reread this for this year's Halloween because a new issue was released. This is still very much enjoyable! It brought back so many childhood scares and memories.
I remember reading this around 2004, and I am so glad that it has an e-book now. The chills from the stories still get me. It's insane that these stories are from actual people who experienced it.
Bring back memories..
Still give the creeps.
Isa sa mga paborito kong series. 💚 Always.
📖
Reread with my physical copy na yay! 🤍
Happy kiddo here. Waiting sa book 11 to 20!
I just added a paranormal shelf for this. I used to be a huge fan of the books, I think it's still continuing production and has more than 15 books published. Amazing.
Read this way, way before I got into Twilight, probably, 5th grade or 6th grade? I don't remember, maybe I was already in high school when I first read it? Hahaha. I forgot, but what I do know is that I got introduced to Bob Ong on my first two years in high school and I was never the same. LOL
Phew. This book was an easy read. If I haven't been busy with college, I probably would've finished this in one sitting. It's been a joy having to dive into these simple horror stories again. It did take me back to the time when I would binge-read these books during elementary. 🥹 TPGS became one of my introductions to horror literature.
HOWEVER, as a writer, my taste grew overtime. It saddens me that I've also outgrown the kind of stories that were written in this book. Most of them were only for the sake of scaring the readers. I didn't remember one story because they were practically all the same—only with different settings, characters, and ghosts. I wish I could've seen more, not gonna lie.
All in all, I'm giving it 2.5 stars. This has been a nostalgic read, after all. 👌 I may or may not continue the second book in the series soon.
I saw a post on Reddit and decided to read this volume for nostalgia’s sake. It was funny that I didn’t find the stories scary anymore, unlike when I was in high school.
I was a bit annoyed by some typos; I think the book could’ve used a better editor.
Anyway, the book was okay. It was nice to reread some stories I still clearly remember to this day—namely, the one about the doppelgänger who loved ube ice cream, Benitez Hall’s Red Eyes, and the headless student passenger.
I loved every single story here. Unlike some of the later books in the series, the stories here all seem that they could actually be true. They were also told in a way that makes you want to call a friend and go, "Uy, alam mo ba, may nabasa ako..."
Definitely the perfect book for those who enjoy short horror stories set in the Philippines!
Weird that they kept mentioning that the killer in "The House That Cries in the Night" is a lesbian, but OK... Out of pocket lesbophobia aside, I didn't find this scary at all. Maybe it was scary for its time (because I remember this being insanely popular when I was younger), but IDK. Even nostalgia couldn't stop my irritation at the juvenile writing.
This book is a classic! I still remember that it was one of my favorite reads when I was a child. I revisited it recently for a dose of nostalgia. While I may not feel the same fear I once did, the joy of having bought it, read it, and finally owning my own copy is a completely different experience.
nabasa ko to nuong nasa kolehyo palang ako.
I used to read this horror books from one of the shelves of National bookstores. I sometimes sat on the floor just to read a single chapter. I think I was in my sophomore year when I first read the bloody mary issue. Great job, Psicom
Stories are written like clinical matter-of-fact narrations that it's not really exciting to read. Still, 3 stars for being an iconic series. Maybe it worked decades ago, but this didn't age well. There are stories here that have wormed themselves into the country's top urban legends.
Viewed on Archive.org ... a fave of my parent's library growing up + scared the shittttt out of me😭 every story comes with an abstract depiction/collage of imagery from the stories and looking at em now makes me laugh. Love U philippines❤️🤍💙💛
2 stars because like every other adult who has reread this, I didn't get scared much (if at all). Very nostalgic though and memorable for kids so gonna bump it up to 3 here
These stories feature the usual Philippine paranormal tropes (white ladies, dwarves, dead soldiers from the various colonial powers) and lack the atmosphere (and rigorous editing) that would make them actually spooky. They're stories that didn't need to be committed to paper. Capitalizing on the fact that most Filipinos have a ghost story or ten (supposedly experienced first- or secondhand) to tell, PsiCom (a Philippine pulp fiction publisher) has already churned out thirty of these books. I wonder if they switch up the details of old stories and reprint them as new.
It's very entertaining, never fails to amaze me. If you're a fan of horror/paranormal stories then this book series is the one for you. I've started reading this since I was in high school. I'm proud to say that this book series lead me to read more books and become a bookworm today...
