I've been wanting to read this book for a while now and receiving a physical copy spurred me to do just that! Oh boy am I glad I got that "kick" up my butt! What a delight this book is! From the header on the very first page, I knew this is a book I'm going to love. And guess what? I was so frigging right! Oh and the header is "All good things get screwed up eventually". The opening chapter alone was enough to sink me, like a stone thrown into a pond, I fell right to the bottom, where the author skilfully rolled me around. The need to know more of Never like drug, pulling me forward.
Never is an enforcer for the Magikai, an intriguing character to say the least, one of a kind magically and verbally, her attitude borders on rebellious. She is coolness personified! I adore her prickly sarcasm, I adore that she doesn't shy away from using all her wiles, magical or otherwise, she is kindhearted yet deadly and uses all her skills to maximum effect. She's fiercely independent, preferring to go it solo but accumulated a gorgeous "family", a family she'll protect with all she has at her disposal. And I loved how she "acquired" an entire coven of vampires, stunningly visual. I loved how reticent she is, although, Nadia pinpointed it accurately, "you've got all the makings of a hero in denial". However, with The Jewelled Claw not dead and gone as Never assumed, they're everywhere, lurking, manipulating, scheming, she has the self inflicted task of finding them, eliminating them before they cause more damage. What she discovers shocks even our unshockable Never and boy is the ante turned up even more! The author titillated me with snippets of her past. In fact, there were SO many tantalising dribbles I could feel the drool starting to leak, I just HAD to know, I just HAD to see if Never could pull off a hat trick, and good golly was I captivated with every single thing! I love love love that these characters are flawed, I love love love that the plot isn't simple or predictable, I just love love love the world building the author so adroitly navigated, taking me through it all!
There's nothing more I love than a witty book, combined with magic of a unique kind and this book ticks all the boxes, add to the well delivered prose, as well as the genius play on words in naming these awesome characters and I was in for a ride! There's thought behind the plot, there's thought and clever crafting behind the every iota of this story but so seamlessly presented, blink and you'll miss it! And the characters, glorious! Besides Never, who's awesomeness personified, Elois the bartender, Aggie the witch, Nadia the intuitive, quickly form part of Never's "extended family". Not that she wanted one but hey, they wormed their way into her heart and she's oh so hellbent on keeping them all safe. Which is a challenge, because Aggie has unusual abilities, Nadia, well everyone and their neighbour want HER, Elios is cursed... yeah, a real bag of all-sorts! And then there's Damien. Oh boy, THERE'S Damien! I couldn't get a reading on Damien, no, I'm not an intuitive, the author sent me through a maze of red herrings, I like him, don't like him, like him... I definitely need to get more of his story! The 2 girls, Aggie and Nadia, coaxed and coached by Never, protected by Never, they and their abilities are awesome! Don't get me started on Hugh! He reminds me of a bespectacled professor, and he's a vamp to boot! I just loved all the characters, how they were represented, how larger than life they were painted.
Although light hearted in tone, the events and action are far from that. The descriptions are exquisite, the characters sublime, I mean, other than those I've already mentioned, there's the Bone Reader, what a fabulous, intriguing idea for a character, who is another kind of awesome! I loved everything about him. I actually loved everything about EVERYTHING in this book! This book was awesome!
