This was a fun intro to a new UF series, with a FMC named Never (she hides her real name, this is like her "safe" public-facing name). I like the characters, though I'm skeptical about the world of the supernatural in this series - every organization seems bad, honestly. I don't see any difference, at all, between the Magikai (Never works for them, basically the supe governing body) and the Jeweled Claw ("bad" guys trying to topple the Magikai). The Magikai treat Never and the Were she's trying to save in this book like property - they act like slave owners, and threaten her repeatedly in this book - and so frankly, I agree with the Jeweled Claw that they need to be brought down. Not that the Jeweled Claw are any better.

It makes for a dilemma, though, because I'm not really rooting for anyone. I don't know that I want Never to succeed, because she works to keep dickheads in power. And I don't want the Jeweled Claw to succeed because they're no better (arguably worse, in that they maybe want to subjugate humanity ... but some say no, they just want to be out to humanity) - they don't have issue with the Magikai being like the mafia, they just want to be the ones in charge. Which, fair enough...if I had to live in that shitshow, I'd want to be the one in charge too. Better that than someone's slave or pawn.

Never makes some dumb choices, but they come from an emotional place, so I can live with it. And I really do like the characters. Currently racing through book 2...

DNF 44% not smart enough for me. Humor is a bit off. Slight second chance romance. He betrayed her a couple of centuries ago so my least favorite type of romance trope.

What do you get when you put a werewolf, a bear shifter, a feline shifter and a witch together? You get one hell of a story is what you get!!
Never is a fantastic fmc. She’s strong, shes smart, she’s sassy and she totally kicks ass as an enforcer and she lets nothing get in her way. Never joins forces with the above to solve a mystery in this well paced, action packed and adventure filled first book. Suspenseful, exciting, this had me laughing out loud in places and gasping in others as the twists and turns had me on the edge of my seat. Incredible world building, fantastic, addictive storyline and a motley crew of magical beings that have you hooked to this and eager for the next book.

I've been wanting to read this book for a while now and receiving a physical copy spurred me to do just that! Oh boy am I glad I got that "kick" up my butt! What a delight this book is! From the header on the very first page, I knew this is a book I'm going to love. And guess what? I was so frigging right! Oh and the header is "All good things get screwed up eventually". The opening chapter alone was enough to sink me, like a stone thrown into a pond, I fell right to the bottom, where the author skilfully rolled me around. The need to know more of Never like drug, pulling me forward.

Never is an enforcer for the Magikai, an intriguing character to say the least, one of a kind magically and verbally, her attitude borders on rebellious. She is coolness personified! I adore her prickly sarcasm, I adore that she doesn't shy away from using all her wiles, magical or otherwise, she is kindhearted yet deadly and uses all her skills to maximum effect. She's fiercely independent, preferring to go it solo but accumulated a gorgeous "family", a family she'll protect with all she has at her disposal. And I loved how she "acquired" an entire coven of vampires, stunningly visual. I loved how reticent she is, although, Nadia pinpointed it accurately, "you've got all the makings of a hero in denial". However, with The Jewelled Claw not dead and gone as Never assumed, they're everywhere, lurking, manipulating, scheming, she has the self inflicted task of finding them, eliminating them before they cause more damage. What she discovers shocks even our unshockable Never and boy is the ante turned up even more! The author titillated me with snippets of her past. In fact, there were SO many tantalising dribbles I could feel the drool starting to leak, I just HAD to know, I just HAD to see if Never could pull off a hat trick, and good golly was I captivated with every single thing! I love love love that these characters are flawed, I love love love that the plot isn't simple or predictable, I just love love love the world building the author so adroitly navigated, taking me through it all!

There's nothing more I love than a witty book, combined with magic of a unique kind and this book ticks all the boxes, add to the well delivered prose, as well as the genius play on words in naming these awesome characters and I was in for a ride! There's thought behind the plot, there's thought and clever crafting behind the every iota of this story but so seamlessly presented, blink and you'll miss it! And the characters, glorious! Besides Never, who's awesomeness personified, Elois the bartender, Aggie the witch, Nadia the intuitive, quickly form part of Never's "extended family". Not that she wanted one but hey, they wormed their way into her heart and she's oh so hellbent on keeping them all safe. Which is a challenge, because Aggie has unusual abilities, Nadia, well everyone and their neighbour want HER, Elios is cursed... yeah, a real bag of all-sorts! And then there's Damien. Oh boy, THERE'S Damien! I couldn't get a reading on Damien, no, I'm not an intuitive, the author sent me through a maze of red herrings, I like him, don't like him, like him... I definitely need to get more of his story! The 2 girls, Aggie and Nadia, coaxed and coached by Never, protected by Never, they and their abilities are awesome! Don't get me started on Hugh! He reminds me of a bespectacled professor, and he's a vamp to boot! I just loved all the characters, how they were represented, how larger than life they were painted.

Although light hearted in tone, the events and action are far from that. The descriptions are exquisite, the characters sublime, I mean, other than those I've already mentioned, there's the Bone Reader, what a fabulous, intriguing idea for a character, who is another kind of awesome! I loved everything about him. I actually loved everything about EVERYTHING in this book! This book was awesome!

Never by Silas Reames

Five Fantastic Stars ✨✨✨✨✨
World Building 🌏🌏🌏🌏🌏
Characters 💁‍♀️👩‍🌾🙍‍♀️🙍‍♂️🙍
Storytelling 📖📖📖📖📖

On opening Never to the first chapter, I knew I was hooked when I read the chapter title, All Good Things Get Screwed Up Eventually.

The writing style for Never is smooth, informal, and straightforward, and the narration is quite friendly with the occasional hint of sarcasm, which I love. The story is being told by the MFC, Never, in the first person.

Our MFC has an element of intrigue as she is trying to avoid something, but we all know you can’t avoid things forever. She’s a smart, sassy enforcer with a unique set of abilities, and teams up with three others to work on a murder case, which isn’t what it seems to be.

Both main and supporting characters are well rounded, and throughout we’re given glimpses of their backgrounds.

I found it very hard to come up with something negative to say the novel. If I had to pick one it would be the MMC. His appearance in the novel is practically zero, except nearing the end. By the end of the book, Never never got the closure she needed, but she knows where his loyalties lie, and that he will have more input in the second book.

Never is also given an ultimatum by the Magicals she works for, and isn’t too pleased by it, and to top it off, she is contracted to produce something that hasn’t been accomplished in hundreds of years, and there seems to be no information around to help her.

The novel doesn’t really a cliff hanger, but if you want the answers to the questions floating around your mind, you will want to read the next book.

This is an ARC review. I rate the books I read on what they give me, and what lasting impressions I have when I have finished reading. I love to be able to immerse myself in the story, the settings, the characters, to have an adventure in my mind. Silas ticks all the above. She writes like a well seasoned author but amazingly, this is her first published novel.

Do I recommend this book? I sure do. Most established authors don’t write as well as Silas has in her first book. I will be following this author so I don’t miss out on her next novel.

Never is a 4oo year old Were who is a loner. When she picks up a case from the Magikai (think supernatural gov't) that involves a young Were, she knows she will need help. So, she begins working with a couple fellow enforcers she is acquainted with as well as a new witch they have working with them. The case gets complicated when her ex-boyfriend (who left her for dead) shows up claiming to be one of the good guys. Now Never must protect this young Were as well as the young witch all while trying to figure out who to trust. (While my summary may seem short and simple, the book is actually full of action and surprises.)
It seems that with Never, there is never a dull moment. She really throws herself into her job and trying to keep everyone safe. She's been alive long enough to be jaded and doesn't like the idea of caring about people. So it's a surprise (to Never at least), when she realizes she has grown to like this group of people she's working with. She is a snarky and sarcastic person and I hope that doesn't change. And Damien, he's just never quite what you want to think. I was definitely hoping for one outcome but was not surprised by the actual outcome. Well, maybe a little - I definitely did not see all of that coming! And I adored all the side characters. They all wormed their way into my heart as well, even the Bone Reader.
There is definitely lots of fighting in this book. There are battles with vampires, shifters, witches and even more supernatural beings. The magic system that the author has come up with is not just the typical magic system. I like how the witches magic works and that there is a difference between shifters and Weres. We find out more about each supernatural group as we read as well. There are 2 opposing supernatural factions in this book and it will make your head spin trying to figure out who belongs where and who is trustworthy. I have been sitting on this series for over a year (bc I have no idea how to manage a TBR pile) and I wish I had gotten to this series sooner!

This was a delight to read, with some really inventive takes on Urban Fantasy tropes. This was the first book I've encountered that drew a sharp distinction between true werewolves (or Weres) and ordinary wolf shifters. Most of the time, those two are synonymous and it was interesting to read about the differences. There were other things I hadn't seen presented in this way, if at all: the need for species to have historians even about their own kind, the way magical contracts are dealt with, and the succession of vampire leaders.

It wasn't immediately apparent to me that Never's shifted form was that of a hybrid wolf-woman – I'd been imagining that she shifted fully into a wolf – so it was somewhat confusing at first when she was able to speak. It gets cleared up later in the book but I wasn't getting it at first.

This is a very lean book but by no means does it skimp on plot or characterization. The world-building and exposition are woven deftly throughout the narrative so we're not bogged down with history lessons or info-dumps. I also appreciate how there were some aspects of the world that weren't fully explained – the Bone Reader being an excellent example. It shows a great deal of confidence to throw in such a fascinating creature and not feel compelled to justify it into oblivion.

I like Never's backstory and justification for her actions. Her growth throughout the story feels natural and earned. The side characters are also nicely fleshed out, making it a dynamic and engaging cast. I've already ordered the next book in this series and I am excited to see what comes next.

DNF @ 35%

I wasn't fond of this right off the bat, but I thought I'd try to stick it out. I didn't make it very far.
I'm not a fan of the writing style, for one. Never is constantly breaking the fourth wall, and this prevents me from being immersed in the story. You know it's being told to you. Some people might really enjoy this style, so I wanted to point that out first.

Never tries REALLY hard to be a badass. She even tells you multiple times that she is one, desperate to convince you because deep down, she knows she's not.
I wouldn't classify her as an antihero, rather as a modern day feminist dressing herself up as independent and strong, when instead she's dressed like a slut but pissed that's she's being objectified.... even after objectifying herself, and while she's objectifying others.

Outside of poor character traits, the plot is slow and thin. She has a bone to pick with her ex, in fact, she means to kill him, yet the first opportunity she has, she runs away from him. Badass, am I right?
The way that the characters meet and then interact with each other is jarring. None of it feels natural. And because Never can't help herself from telling you everything, you're shown very little. Yes, I do not like this style at all.
Anyway, I started skimming, then realized I was wasting precious book reading time on a book I did not enjoy, so I'm done with this.

I’m so glad I discovered this new series! Never is a four-hundred-year-old Were. She’s not a werewolf, but something more humanoid in appearance and even more ancient and powerful, having both physical strength and a rare intuitive ability. She’s an official enforcer of the Magikai, the governing body for supernatural beings. The latest contract involves finding—and protecting—a fellow younger intuitive Were named Nadia from a nefarious organization who wants to use her to their own advantage.

Despite usually working alone, she takes on a few partners in this endeavor, including two shifters, Todd (bear shifter) and Lynx (feline shifter), and a young and very powerful witch, Aggie. Never is a multi-layered character with a hidden past whom I grew to like very much, with her protectiveness and generosity overriding her solitary nature. As a result, she gets into some challenging predicaments that lead to an interesting future, including going against her former ex to secure Nadia’s safety.

The world-building was well done in NEVER. And the pacing was generally good, too. There are a few very unique side characters like barkeep Elios and the Bone Reader whom I expect (hope) will play continuing roles in upcoming installments. And I expect to see a lot more of Never’s friends.

I can’t wait to read the next one!

A Stunning New Series! **NO SPOILERS **

A new urban fantasy series that should be on the TBR pile of fantasy lovers everywhere.

Set in a current contemporary version of the US, Never is a rare creature indeed. She’s a werewolf that is something very very different than a shifter. Were’s have strong talents and Never’s is the rarest, she’s an Intuitive. She can read people as easily as reading a book. As is often the case in this genre the vast majority of humans are blissfully unaware and ignorant of things that go bump in the night. Shifters, Wictes, Warlocks, Vampires and of course the Weres exist. The legends of humanity didn’t get everything right, quite the opposite.
Like a lot of supernaturals Never is quite well off, most non humans are largely based on having been around for a long time.

This time trouble has come to Never’s home city, reports of a wild animal attack at a fairground just scream supernatural involvement. Unfortunately when Never gets to there there’s already another team working the scene. Forced to join forces Never uncovers some disturbing facts there’s another Were involved.

Love, love, love the story concept. The world building is top notch and everything just flows together smoothly. I’m counting myself lucky, having just found a new author to follow.

Here’s something that’ll come as precisely no surprise to anyone who’s read my books. I’m a sucker for a snarky ancient immortal. I’m even more of a sucker for found family. Throw them together? You’re pitching direct to me. Unless you’re Silas Reames of course. In which case she’s too busy knocking it out of the park.

Okay, that’s the limit of my knowledge of baseball, or ability to make any form of metaphor out of it, but what I can say is that I finally managed to get to read Never (book 1 of Shifter Vengeance) and I absolutely loved it. Never is a character with a mysterious past and a lingering promise that are teased out throughout this first book in the series. The twists keep coming, the bruises she’s kept hidden come to the surface… and the great ensemble of characters she starts to (unwillingly) find working their way into her home and her heart help us to discover the depth to this woman driven by vengeance.

This is a phenomenal kick off to a series, and I cannot wait to read the rest of it. We started publishing at around the same time, and I’m proud to be a graduate of the same year class as such a wonderful writer. Go discover Silas Reames and trust me – will you regret it?

Never is a 400-year-old werewolf, not a shifter but an actual werewolf. She doesn’t have a wolf form not is she what they call two souled. She is also classed as an intuitive, meaning she can actually sense intentions/emotions of others.
She is a contractor for the Magikai, the supernatural governing power, and has just accepted a job searching for another were. With the help of a bear shifter, a lynx shifter and a young witch, she sets out to find and/or save the young were who has the same rare power she does.
The Jewelled Claw is an organization that is trying to overthrow the Magikai, have the supernaturals take over the world and subjugate the humans. They are also after the young were.
Along the way she runs into her ex, Damian, who she is planning to kill for his actions years ago that left her in danger and a prisoner. There are also lots of other shifters, vampires, witches and more.
This book has a fair amount of action, interesting characters and interactions, there is humour and Never is outstanding. She will use anything she can to get the job done but will only choose jobs that do not go after innocents.
This is a great book, and thanks to several reviews that I read, the series is now a must read.

Never:  Shifter Vengeance. By Silas Reames.

My review

Track down a killer, collect the reward, enjoy a well-deserved drink. Shouldn't be too hard, right?

Never is a badass, kick ass take names kind of were, she's four hundred years old, she's seen it all and has the hard edges to prove it.

But the job becomes more complicated as her ex is involved and she's sworn she's going to kill him, also she finds  herself working alongside a Bear shifter a Lynx Shifter and a young Witch!  As the case becomes more and more dangerous and the stakes rise despite herself she finds her new colleagues rubbing away at her hard exterior and she finds that shes actually starting to care for them.

Never is a smart fun fast paced urban fantasy with some bone crunching and bloody action, but in places it's also laugh out loud funny, Never is despite everything a likable character and there are some clever twists regarding shifter lore, the plot is clever with out being to clever and the pacing is perfect. All in all a very good read and I will enjoy Never and the gangs next outing.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

3.5*

First time read the author's work?: Yes

Will you be reading more?: Yes

Would you recommend?: Yes

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

I liked this book. It was an easy and quick read to scratch my upper YA itch. It is a good opener to a series and was written well. The amount of detail used was good, and the character growth we see in our FMC is awesome, and I hope it continues to grow throughout the series. It had some twists and turns, and I'm still questioning who the bad guy really is. Luckily, I already have book 2, Never Again, so I won't have to wait long to find out. Book 3 will also be releasing on Halloween this year, so catching up now is perfect timing!

My heat rating is based on the amount of occurrence, length of scenes, and how filthy/unconventional the scenes are.  This is a 1/5 🌶 on my scale. There is a scene, but it is not detailed or explicit. A scene you could expect in an upper YA.

I absolutely loved meeting Never, a kick-butt female protagonist who is one of the rare Weres. As well as being a Were, she is also an intuitive, which means she can sense the emotions of those around her. Never works for the mysterious Magikai, tracking down killers and bringing them to justice - one way or another.

Never has everything I love in an urban fantasy read, fast-paced action, humour, found family vibes, and a strong female protagonist. What's not to love?

Quote: "𝐃𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠. 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐝𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐤𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 @𝐬𝐬"

This fun read occasionally breaks the fourth wall, leading to Deadpool-esque vibes. It is available in Audiobook, and is also available to binge in Kindle Unlimited. With only 200 odd reviews, this excellent series deserves far more attention that it has received.

This book is such a unique take on paranormal story. It is about a were named Never and her job as an enforcer. She joins a ragtag group of paranormals as they try to solve a mystery. The levels of twists and turns in this has me wondering what maze I was in. Every time I thought I had something figured out there was another twist. It was amazing and I loved every second of it. I am so excited for the next book because I need to know how their story continues. I would recommend this book for anyone who loves a good mystery, loves paranormal characters with a deep sense of good and a book that will keep you guessing.

Okay, I do not know what I was expecting.. but what a great story! With a strong and fierce FEMALE main character? I love to see it!

The world-building was essential but not too long, and I also loved the character development. I did not feel lost. Also, shifters and a murder case?! Each time I thought I knew where the story was going.. yeah I was just wrong.

Quick and great read, definitely ready for book two!
I want to thank the author Silas for the ebook and all of the opinions/thoughts above are entirely my own!

Reames introduces a new type of supernatural in this world and Never is an amazing badass character with a begrudging heart of gold underneath her brutal exterior. Watching her accidentally collect a found family and fight to save them even as she struggled with her emotional responses to many situations made the plot infinitely more layered. This was an exciting start to the series with so many intriguing facets to be explored further. I can’t wait to read the next book - I especially want to learn more about making Weres and the Bone Reader!!

This is the first book in the series and I can't wait to binge read the rest of it.
It had me cheering for our hero and her misfit family that comes to exist over time and by accident.
There is so much going on so fast that no matter how many times I thought I had it figured out, I was wrong and had to keep reading to find out exactly what was going to happen.
Then the pages stopped turning and the dreaded last page, cliff hanger came into being!
Quick download Never Again, book #2!
If you like the paranormal, magic and lol humor, then I highly recommend this series!

Not only is this series a super fresh take on the paranormal, it's immensely engaging, fast paced and funny, with a kick-ass heroine. Never is a mix of some of the best heroines in the urban fantasy genre, reminiscent of Kate Daniels (Ilona Andrews) and Immogen Grey (Lauretta Hignett), among others, while still being completely unique. The rest of the characters are also imaginative, well thought out, and developed without detracting from the storyline. Their personalities draw you in and make the world come alive. Very happy to have discovered this author, and am looking forward to more.

I binged the series and loved it!

I love Never and the found family she builds along the way. I like that the characters are mostly relatable and when they are not it is quirky not annoying. After the 1st book I thought I knew what was going to happen but was pleasantly surprised I was wrong. As an avid reader who has been having trouble lately finding new books I connect with, I am so happy to have found this author. I am eagerly awaiting the next/last book in this series and anything else she writes.

Silas does an amazing job with her world building, incorporation of magical creatures, adventure, action, and of course, romance!
Never is such a relatable character with the perfect amount of confidence, swagger, and insecurity mixed together!
Reading this book felt like I stepped into a detective crime movie! I was sucked in and loved every second of it!
I cannot wait to read the rest of this series!

From the first page, I was a fan. Never is a badass FMC, who doesn't let people push her around, but still has her sensitive side. It is wonderful how the story is structured. One minute it is super exciting and the next you are laughing. Silas has managed to create a perfect combination between murder mystery, a fantasy book and a slow burn romance. I highly recommend it. There were also some surprising plot twists in the story. I am really looking forward to the sequel and am very curious about how Never will continue her story.

Never is the FMC she is strong, sassy and with a unique set of abilities. She doesn’t let anyone push her around, yet she is caring. The writing style was well structured and plotted. You will be laughing and then pulled into the excitement and mystery. This was a perfect fast read fantasy with a slow burn romance. While some of the plot is easy to guess you’ll also have plenty of plot twists as well. I’m excited for the sequel to come from Silas!

Never is a string and interesting lead character , I loved how independent she is. I really enjoyed this book about Never, a werewolf with a history that doesn't stop interfering. She tough and will always get the job done, but has a soft spot too of course. The world building was intriguing and I'm looking forward to more in this series. The characters were varied and full so I'm ready for more of them too. And the plot just kept trucking along and throwing me in all sorts of directions. Great read!

This was a surprise I really liked the characters in this book. The main character is very likeable and the story characters are a little different to the average book so it has a fresh perspective. I also like a hero that has a large brush of villain as well . I read this genre a lot and lately the pickings have been slim. It was so good to find something that had me making time free to read it.
