The First Ten

Rate this book
From Jamie Mathieson, award winning screenwriter of Doctor Who (Oxygen, Flatline, Mummy On The Orient Express) come ten stories of suspense, science fiction and fear.

As a doomed plane plummets to the ground, one of the passengers reflects upon her life, only now spotting jarring inconsistencies…

On a dying Earth, a child finds a derelict supermarket with a breathtaking secret that could save her life, or take it…

Within a crashed UFO scientists discover the monstrous corpse of an alien, with huge footprints leading into the woods…

Often unsettling, sometimes darkly funny and always surprising, these stories demonstrate why the author is lauded as the one of the great discoveries of modern Doctor Who.

Great set of well-written stories

Had only heard of the author through his website and Dr Who works, but there's some great reading, characterisation and twists in here - even if some are obvious a mile away - but in 9/10 tales here you'll enjoy the journey as much as the ending.

Look forward to the second ten.

Hit and miss. The misses are never offensive though, they just can't touch those hits. Favourites included a Battle torn city frozen in time, a little girl caught in a paradox, and a drug ring profiting on alien skin as its product.

Having been a fan of Jamie Mathieson's work on Being Human and Doctor Who, I was very intrigued by this short story collection. As with any anthology book, some of the short stories are better than others, but there's some great ideas in here which could be great novels in themselves.
