Currently rereading the True Philippine Ghost Stories series for Halloween 2024 and this one's the worst one imo. None of the stories were good, even with the nostalgia factor going.
I’ve been rereading every single TPGS book of mine recently and this is hands down THE best collection in the entire series.
I enjoyed pretty much everything in this book except for one. The storytelling for almost every story was fantastic. I loved the buildups, the plot twists, the reveal, everything.
This is definitely my top pick out of the 30+ books in the series so far. If I were to recommend any TPGS book to anyone, I’d choose #4.
Some of my favorite stories include: - The Lady in the Black Dress - The Baby Trap - Sundo - Housemates - Urban Legend (oh my god this was creepy x 100)
Take note, I first read this book when I was maybe 7-8 years old and these stories have been on my mind for almost 2 decades. That’s how effective they are at being spooky!
The only story I didn’t really like (and actively hated tbh) is Something Terror This Road Comes.
I don’t even know how it made it to this collection — the grammar was plain bad and I’m not even sure if the writer knew what they wanted to say half the time. So many sentences were either weird, bad, or just unintelligible.
- “The actual setting where the grably-plank thing exploded was a so-called eastern road Savanna.” - “They were all hooked up by what terrified them.” - “Devastating, though surprising, is that a young lady with a spirited mjnd like me hasn’t yet been bothered by things that can’t be explained by the natural outlook, although visible to other people.” - “One must face in the other side of the world which includes dealing with the psychological state of matter, the unpurified hallucinations, and keeping a soul-sight mind over psychic people.”
I’m being nitpicky, I know, but oh well, that’s what happens when everything else in a collection is pretty good and only one story is laughably bad. 😂
