Nobody's Business

Rate this book
After the death of her husband, professional competitive skier Brooklyn Raine has shunned the press. Living as Lyn Hill, bed-and-breakfast owner in a quaint Vermont mountain town, Brooklyn keeps a low profile and avoids any link to her former celebrity status. Now, her famous older sister has arrived with her children and fiancé in tow, and the spotlight threatens to burn bright on Brooklyn once again.

Sports reporter Douglas Sawyer sustained a devastating loss in Iraq and no longer cares about his career, much less his future. At the insistence of friends and family, he becomes the first civilian participant in Ski-Hab, a winter sports rehabilitation program for war veterans and amputees. After he discovers that pushy Lyn Hill is actually former ski star Brooklyn Raine, his instincts sense the perfect story line to thrust him back into the journalism world. Despite interference from other skiers, the local cab driver, and Brooklyn herself, Doug is determined to chronicle the life of the former ski champ.

But when their secrets are revealed, each will face a hard choice. Will Brooklyn and Doug abandon the easy trail to take a chance on the more challenging slope to love?

I'm no fan of romance novels, but this title caught my attention because of the veteran amputees angle. Lyn, a former Olympic skier whose husband died of cancer has retired from public life. To honor her late husband, also a champion skier, she opens a B&B in a ski area and, with the help of an amputee, opens a skiing rehab center for amputee vets called Ski-Hab.

Enter Mr. Uh-Oh. Doug is a sports reporter who went to Iraq for a story. The humvee he was in blew up and he was the only survivor, minus his right/dominant arm. He is the first non-vet to enter the Ski-Hab program.

The tension comes from Doug wanting a "where is she now" story about the former Olympian, and her horror of any publicity. They're hiding these major secrets from one another while falling in love (in one week!). The secrets were a stretch for me; I would have blurted them out. But if you're a romance fan, there is a decent amount of tension build-up before they manage to fall into each other's arms/arm.

The author is a solid writer, not much corny stuff or overused cliches. I was confused as to whether Lyn had one sister or two -- ultimately, two. I would recommend this book to romance readers who like a clean read with little over-sentimentality.

Nobody's Business, #2 - While more of a serious story compared to Darling, Business is interesting, heartwarming and romantic. Good characters and story lines and plenty of wounded warriors in ski rehab make this an enjoyable read. Source: BookSprout. 4*

Nobody’s Darling, #1 - What a fun read! Full of humor while dealing with childhood and adult traumas. A gamut of emotions for both characters trying to win a contest while dealing with deceit from the reality show. The discoveries and learnings they face during the month in a fishbowl change them forever. Wonderful characters with clean story lines made for an enjoyable read. Source: BookSprout. 5*
Nobody Series end.

Twilight Time - It's hard for me to find books I like outside of the thriller-action-mystery genres that I prefer. This is an excellent representative of a book I can get immersed in until the last page. Of course, with the ailing pet, mine was a 17-yo male tuxedo cat, brought emotions out that I seldom feel in great depth for human or animal. The author's writing style is that good to bring to the surface what I had experienced back in 2001. New. Fresh.

Sad bits aside, the rest of the story is awesome; wonderful characters, interesting story lines, strong emotions and love, lots of it. Instead of the usual stupid dramas common in this genre, the drama which raised its head occasionally was handled as adults, no screaming tantrums. OK, there's a problem, let's work it out, which was done by various methods. I will be looking for more books to savor by this author. Hopefully, I don't have Zachary to anguish over, again, in another book. Source: Booksprout. 5*

This is book two in The Nobody’s Business series and it is Brooklyn and Douglas story. Brooklyn used to be a professional competitive skier but when her husband died she walked away from her career, limelight and the press and then changed her name to Lyn and opened up a B & B in Vermont and keeps a low profile but to honour her husband she had opened a skiing rehab centre for vets called Ski-Hab to help them. Douglas is a reporter and while in Iraq covering a story he was the only survivor when the HUMVEE he was travelling in blew up and he lost his right arm so when he heard of the Vet Ski-Hab program he decided to go especially as he had nothing to lose and hopefully it would help him move forward with his life. This book takes you on a journey of love, loss, secrets, tension, hope and some difficult situations that will have you turning the pages to see what happened next and it has great characters along with recovery and second chances and I couldn’t put this book down as it pulled you in and kept your attention throughout and I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

Ill-informed views of Down Syndrome ruined it

The author writes well and has stories to tell, but her archaic views of Down Syndrome shocked me. A peripheral character, the nephew of the main character, a child, has Down Syndrome. She writes "she loves her nephew, but sometimes, facing his disability made her squirm. ....while April had long ago adjusted to his awkward facial features and physical limitations, the rest of the family tended to avoid direct eye contact for fear of hurting the child's feelings with an involuntarily wince or grimace." Really horrible, IMHO.
She also gives out incorrect information about the amount of exercise greyhounds need. Greyhounds are happy to be couch potatoes, they don't generally require hour long runs.
I think this book needed heavy red penciling and a decent editor.

Doug did have a woe is me attitude after losing his arm and he needed that push from Lyn to try things he didn’t think he was capable of in his new body. But he sees her as a potential story rather than someone with feelings he’s had a crush on for years. I don’t blame her for shying away from the press after the bottom dwellers were ruthless during her loss. Doug didn’t tell her the truth about him until after the press finds her and I would struggle too to get that trust back. It was nice to catch up with April, Jeff, and her children and I’m looking forward to their sister’s story.

A well written, well thought out plot that is an enjoyable read. A romantic story line that's heartwarming, keeps your attention and deals with real life issues of war, death, injury and recovery.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
