A journey back in time to the “realities” of life long ago can be eye opening and the use of the actual letters adds realism to the somewhat “gritty” world even the rich lived hundreds of years ago. I did find that it got very “samey” as the journey through Europe progressed and I did get a tad bored but what lifted the book above all else was the frequent plates of illustrations and etchings. The quality of the art on show was exceptional and the author is to be praised for some inspired selections, many were new to me such as Panini and opened a new avenue of exploration.
What I love about this book is, the fact that it included many illustrations. I am a visual person, so the beautiful paintings are definitely help me to immerse in this book.
