The Chickaswa Indians were forced to migrate to Oklahoma by the US government, taking their slaves with them. After slavery was ended, the former slaves were left in a legal limbo, neither a member of the Indian nation or considered freedmen.

I read this while doing my family tree research. It's a very eye opening book especially regarding the Chickasaw who owned slaves and sided with the Confederacy during the Civil War. Very in formative.
