Perfect for reluctant readers and word lovers alike, Dan Gutman's hugely popular My Weird School series has something for everyone. Don't miss the hilarious adventures of A.J. and the gang.
The author of over 80 books in a little over a decade of writing, Dan Gutman has written on topics from computers to baseball. Beginning his freelance career as a nonfiction author dealing mostly with sports for adults and young readers, Gutman has concentrated on juvenile fiction since 1995. His most popular titles include the time-travel sports book Honus and Me and its sequels, and a clutch of baseball books, including The Green Monster from Left Field. From hopeful and very youthful presidential candidates to stunt men, nothing is off limits in Gutman's fertile imagination. As he noted on his author Web site, since writing his first novel, They Came from Centerfield, in 1994, he has been hooked on fiction. "It was fun to write, kids loved it, and I discovered how incredibly rewarding it is to take a blank page and turn it into a WORLD."
Gutman was born in New York City in 1955, but moved to Newark, New Jersey the following year and spent his youth there.
The school janitor, Miss Lazar, is quite bizarre. She might be a superhero.
A very funny book.
I don't recommend them for the intended age group of 2nd graders unless you don't mind them reading about a protagonist who hates school, asks to go to the bathroom just to get out of class for a while, and calls another student a "brown noser." Also might want to make sure that the person reading it has enough mental capacity to figure out that sticking a toilet plunger to the top of someone's head to lower them off a 2 story building is just silly fun and not a realistic rescue method.
This book is rated 🌟🌟🌗stars not 🌟🌟 stars. I didn't really like this book because it was really repetitive. It was really repetitive because in ALL 🇦🇱🇱 the books in the series Ryan says "maybe the teacher kidnapped the real teacher?" And I think that is really stupid. Overall, I don't think this book was that great.
This is my first book by the author. I was looking for a short kids' story that could put a dent in my reading challenge. And this book delivers. I love the story. I love the main character's POV. It makes me smile like a fool while listening because it made me remember how completely innocent elementary kids are...and how naughty and mischievous on the side. The narrator also captured the personality of our main character and also the secondary characters which made the audiobook more entertaining.
This won't definitely be my last book by this author. I now so look forward to the other books in the series!
I really loved this one. Miss Lazar is Bizarre is about the school janitor who AJ and the gang suspects might be a superhero. After Miss Lazar comes to the rescue on multiple occasions and scales the building to rescue lost toys, everyone praises her around the school. Pretty soon, the principle gets jealous of all the attention Miss Lazar is getting so the kids at Ella Mentry Elementary school concoct a distraction to make the principal to center of attention for a day... until it all goes wrong.
This one was so cute and funny. One of the best books in the series I've read yet.
I read this book to my son years ago, and we both laughed so hard during the "rescue" scene. It is the absolute funniest scene that I've ever read in my life!
My son has ADHD and was a little naughty when he was in gradeschool, and the main character was someone with whom my son could identify. This series of books finally helped him learn to LOVE to read, and that's really what it's all about, right?
If your child has not discovered a love for reading yet, and you are searching for a series of books that might spark that love, try this series. These books are hilarious!
I enjoyed the fact that the children really respect their custodian. /in real life, they tend to be ignored, but schools wouldn't function without them. I had to mark one star down for the lowering the principal with a plunger part. Only because the kids of this age range tend to be pretty impressionable, and they shouldn't learn that it's okay to climb walls (or that a plunger on the head will save a life). Just me nitpicking. Very entertaining read though.

The custodian really is the unsung hero of the school. Here, Gutman has made the custodian a literal superhero whose praises are literally sung. He even goes against type and casts a woman in the role! Way to spin that formula into a feminist manifesto! Or at the very least, giving me a new way to engage with this text.
This is a decent early chapter book series. Each book has a bit of humor and a relatable setting and characters that make them easy for students to engage with.
Ok, I know this is a kids book, but still. The concepts are funny and the innocence of the students makes it amusing. I like how you don't need to read the stories in order and how AJ manages to get away with everything with the gang, Andrea (the brown noser), and Emily (the crybaby).
Ok so it’s great but a little short and the begging is a little bit rough. So the story goes A.J the little boy goes to the bathroom to escape class and does not go to the bathroom. And the toilet explodes and miss lazar wants to see everyone drop there trash is a nice cleaner.

Hilarious! School custodians are always the best people to befriend. They know the whole school inside and out and keep every bit in working order. And in A.J.'s case, she's a superhero!
4.5 maybe. The girls just gobble up these books. There is something fun about the repetition in the books and the characters from book to book. They also don't need to be read in any order really.
