Broken Kingdom

Rate this book
Threatened by demons. Haunted by the Queen of Death. To save her kingdom, Halia will lose everything.
The barrier that protected Misroth for two hundred years is broken. While Halia is held captive by the monstrous nestrae, the demons march toward her homeland, threatening to destroy all she has fought to protect. Meanwhile, Gillen, the rightful king of Misroth, is battling for his life...and mind. The Life-Giver seems silent, but Nesrelle, Queen of Death, is not, and her message is death isn't finished with Halia-or the ones she loves.
Misroth's only hope lies with its worst the Alrenian Empire, a bloodthirsty land that is both wicked and alluring, full of deadly games and fierce dragons. But time draws short. Misroth is crumbling into chaos and terror. The throne is empty. And the Queen of Death is waiting.
In this epic final installment of the Silent Kingdom series, readers will delve deeper into a world of tragedy and triumph, dragons and demons, and love and loss.

Wow, I’m so sad this series is over. The scenes are vivid, the characters are courageous and everything I’d want in my friends. Seeing Halia grow and battle through this book is simply amazing.

The author toys brilliantly with emotions, juggling hope and despair in a hypnotising dance. This trilogy is an absolute must read. The characters are so full and unique, each with their strengths and weaknesses, and the world building so beautiful. The battle scenes are really well done and the story leaves a burning mark, like a rune (if you’ve read it, you know what I mean), except it haunts positively.

{Spoilers as I am reflecting on the trilogy as a whole rather than each individual book after just reading all three within a short period of time.}

All of the Silent Kingdom books are highly detailed and action packed. One can easily feel the emotions of the characters as they fight for their freedom and Halia's angst as she goes through one life altering event after another in her journey to save the kingdom. The journey is the most important part of this adventure, as well as the characters finding themselves as they grow up and realizing that they are in fact stronger than they think. This is portrayed well in each of the battles that they go through- not only against the creatures that Rachel has made up and brought to life in her descriptions that seem to come out of the pages and get stuck in the reader's mind, but also their personal battles against not feeling adequate in their life roles or the grief that they have gone through. The reader can feel the grief the authoress has gone through in her own life through the darknesses that she portrays in her stories.

If you enjoy reading about humans in a battle against demons and other mythical creatures, this trilogy has plenty of them. I am not big on this type of genre, but I wanted to read them due to personally knowing the authoress and wanting to support her. I personally would have liked less fighting and more romance between Halia and Avrik (and sooner), but these are not those kinds of books. Rachel always asks for an honest review, so I do have to add a couple things I thought about as I was reading:

- Some of the journeys that Halia took seemed to drag on a bit. For example, the time that they spent underground in Toryn in Forsaken Kingdom. Or the Journey they took through the forest to get to Toryn in the first place. Of course a journey by foot would have taken forever, especially with all of the interactions they had with Sedwa and Ichgor along the way, and I understand the dramatics needed. However, to me some of it started to become redundant and teetered on the edge of being too much in terms of time and blood shed- and the amount of times Avrik and the others were threatened (or actually "killed") but always came back in the end.
- The other redundancy was with Halia and her always looking back at her parents and how they made her feel, or the "condemned" drune that kept coming back to haunt her. It also happened with Avrik with his thoughts on his father or the connection between Gillen and others. While these are all completely appropriate in respects to the story line and needing to portray how they felt, sometimes it could have been left out as these thoughts had already been shown to the reader multiple times and there was already that connection established between the reader and the characters.

To summarize, if Rachel needed to cut out some of the story and make it shorter like I know some editors are inclined to ask of their writers, there are some portions that could have been taken out without hinderance to the dramatics of the story as a whole. In all it was a very well written trilogy full of thoroughly described images that pulls the reader into the fear and struggles that the characters face. And has the reader emotionally invested in how everything will turn out in the end.

"We stayed there and watched the sunrise, avoiding the weight of every burden pressing down on us, avoiding the way our time was running out. Pretending we had forever."

I cannot begin to describe my love for book and appreciation for this series. In the conclusion, we follow Halia as she enters Alrenor and attempts to save her kingdom. I was with these characters every step of their journey; they left me laughing, angry, crying, and in few times, finding peace.

And one of the best parts? Dragons! I have been looking for a dragon book and I had high hopes of it when I first picked up the series. Don't worry, Schade does not disappoint with her descriptions of these dangerously beautiful beasts.

And as per usual, she didn't stick to the standard expectations I had when I was reading. I was trying to plan out where this story was going to go so that I wouldn't be so emotionally vested. But I was so wrong. No matter what different scenarios I tried to tell myself this story would head, Schade and Halia had different thoughts. I was still left in anticipation and needing to know what was going to happen to these characters that I fell in love with.

I cannot begin to describe Schade's amazing story writing talents. She honestly writes magical words on paper in such a way that makes me feel as if I am standing on the hills of Evren soaking up the sun, breathing in the fresh air. I become so immersed in her story writing that I honestly feel like I am stepping out of the book and back into this world. It really just feels like a cinematic masterpiece like how you would expect to see Middle Earth on the big screens.

I cannot thank Schade enough for giving me this story of Halia and her strength. Because being surrounded by the ones I loved (whether fictional or real), I know I can face anything.

Broken Kingdom, the third book in the Silent Kingdom series by Rachel L Schade is the perfect end for an amazing series like this! It's super suspenseful and full of unsunpected events. The story takes place right after the second book and we still accompany Halia and her friends on their adventure to save Gillen and even more important their kingdom. After the barrier broke, the Nestrae infiltrate Misroth and torture the people with their horrifying visions, but they wait to destroy the kingdom until Halias birthday. Is she able to escape the Nestrae and save her kingdom in time?
Continue the story and find out, it's totally worth it! Once I started reading the book I couldn't put it down and the end came sooner than I thought. I was like under a spell while reading, I felt like I was there with the small group of friends I grew to love. I laughed, grieved and fought with them and I totally ugly cried at the end! Read this book and you know how I feel!

I can't believe it's over. The whole series is done. What a crazy, insane, and nail-biting adventure!

Watching Halia go from a scared and terrified girl to the tough woman she has become through the three books was amazing! She has learned a lot in her travels and it was great to see her fight for her kingdom!

While I zipped through the first two book and was (impatiently) waiting for more, it took be quite a bit to get through book 3. I felt this book needed to be quite a bit lengthier to really wrap up the various story lines.

And can I just say, DRAGONS! I loved how they were brought into the story and kept throughout. I wish there had been a bit more there with them in the story, but it was a joy to see them in the book.

Overall, a great read and a great series. I can't wait to see what else this author creates!

I loved it. I was so excited for this book and I was not disappointed. Of course it wasn’t all sunshine and butterflies, but who expected it to be? It was a great end to the trilogy.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Rounding up again. Another 3.5 stars. Parts of this book I loved. The characters especially. But some parts are still really slow and the end scene with the goddess of death was pretty anticlimactic. Was left feeling puzzled by how the author decided to end it with her. Loved the dragons and excited to read the spin off series that will feature them more prominently.

I enjoyed the ending. Book two especially was so dark and hopeless feeling, this book had some of that similar tone but hope shined through, the beauty of how they come together to fight for each other, their kingdom and people, for good over evil. Beautiful and well done.

It has been a while since I have sat down and enjoyed a fantasy novel. Fantasy is my preferred genre, but it's been hard to find a good book to escape into. I would say that overall this book and this series was able to let me escape into it. I have seen people complain about things in fantasy being a little too unrealistic and if that's something that you don't enjoy, then you might not enjoy this book and series. For me, I don't have a problem with that. So it was a lot of fun. I decided to give this book a review because it doesn't have many reviews. In my opinion the content was clean. There was no sex. I didn't notice any inappropriate language. I was able to really fall in love with the characters. I felt like there were lines in this book that transformed many of the "villains" from more one dimensional villains to more fleshed out villains that you could even sympathize with. There is deity in this series and it felt like it could have come out of folklore or ancient theology. I will clarify the villain that was deity is really not someone intended to be sympathized with. The best part of the book was finally getting some resolutions to the unspoken drama that has been plaguing the main characters for most of the series.

Tremendous ending!

Loved this series! It gets a bit dark sometimes but the outcome is always good. Although fantasy, the story weaves such profound descriptions of heaven into it, makes you smile! Great read!

Action packed!

Love all three books in this series. Fantasy, monsters, underdogs, warriors, female lead character, sacrifice, family dynamics, lore, kingdoms, little bit of romance, and even a few friendly dragons!
