Dreaming of a Duke Like You by Sara Bennett
Duke of Grantham series #1. Historical romance.
Gabriel Cadieux was abandoned to a foundling home as a very young boy. He now owns and runs a successful gambling club and doesn’t have much appreciation for the peerage other than the money it makes him. When he suddenly finds himself with the title of Duke, and six rebellious half sisters, he freely admits he needs help. Gabriel offers Vivienne Tremeer a trade. He will forgive her brother's debt if Vivienne will help teach his sisters to behave for society. Vivienne doesn’t exactly trust this new Duke but she doesn’t really have a choice. She will teach manners and deportment to his sisters. Dancing with him is certainly not a hardship. Now she just needs to keep her heart from falling into his hands.

Both Vivienne and Gabriel are outsiders and that’s partly the attraction to each other. They both have hard realities to learn. He is being pushed to wed the right woman while she is just trying to survive until her brother inherits the estate. Both have to deal with relatives that want what’s best for themselves and not necessarily the best for Vivienne or Gabriel emotionally. Do they make the decision of the heart or the one that is proper? The pressure of society is not a little thing.

Slow burn, tempting kisses. Wild and improper sisters make for a bit of fun in the tragedy of gambling debts and unwelcome family. A flirting glance while dancing can lead to much more.
Enjoyable, a bit steamy, and ultimate win with the power of money.

I so enjoy a good historical and this one is fabulous, I loved the characters so much, can two people with scandalous pasts find the love and happiness that they deserve? I am thrilled that it is the start of a new series, can’t wait for more.

Gabriel Cadieux grew up in a foundling home, never knowing his background, he is now the very successful owner of a gaming club, but life is about to change for Gabriel when he discovers that he is the legitimate heir to a dukedom, will he take on the role, especially when he discovers he has six half- sisters, who tend to be a bit rebellious and that the estate is practically broke. When he meets his sisters he knows he cannot abandon them, he is now The Duke of Grantham.

Vivienne Tremeer has to do something to save her younger brother Will, she arrives at the Cadieux gaming club late at night to talk to the owner about letting the debt go, but what happens is an offer that Vivienne cannot refuse, will she help with his sisters and get them ready to take part in ton life, soon Vivienne is not only loving being with the girls she is also loving spending time with Gabriel.

Life in the ton is not always easy and with Vivienne’s past and the scandal that has already rocked the Ashton family, soon things are heating up and it appears more scandal is about to erupt, will love conquer the talk, will Gabriel and Vivienne find that love, this one had me turning the pages and cheering them on, there are some characters in this story that will go to any lengths to stop them though.

I did love this story and highly recommend it to any historical romance reader and I can’t wait for the next one.

My thanks to the author for my copy to read and review.

Dreaming of a Duke Like You was an enjoyable read featuring a romance with a club owner turned duke and a woman trying to save her brother from ruin.

Vivienne Tremeer keeps to the straight and narrow after a scandal ruined her reputation. But when her brother reveals he's in debt to a gambling hell, Vivienne storms into the club determined to get Gabriel Cadieux to forgive her brother's debt. Gabriel is struggling with the discovery that he's the heir to a dukedom and all of the newfound responsibilities that come with it. When Vivienne appears, he realizes she may be the answer to at least one of his problems. With six half-sisters to prepare for entry into Society, Gabriel offers to clear Vivienne's brother's debt if she agrees to teach his sisters Society's rules. Vivienne accepts his proposal and now she'll have to navigate spending time with the duke without falling for him and creating an even bigger scandal.

The premise of Dreaming of a Duke Like You was a fun one and I was looking forward to seeing how Vivienne's lessons for the sisters would turn out. Gabriel's sisters are a lively bunch and they don't really have a desire to conform with Society's expectations which makes teaching them a challenge. I really enjoyed the relationships Gabriel developed with them as he only found out about them after inheriting the title. The lessons themselves were fun and I liked how Vivienne connected with the girls.

Vivienne and Gabriel's first several interactions were great and I couldn't wait to see how their relationship would play out. The arrangement they come up with the clear the debt was fun and I liked how it forced them to be in proximity to each other. I did feel like the romance was a little slow to develop and I would have liked to see their relationship progress a little quicker than it did. I also didn't love Gabriel had a tendency to give in to whatever his grandmother said despite the fact he didn't have a relationship with the woman prior to inheriting and due to the fact she was a terrible person. Aside from those issues, I did like the two together and I would enjoy seeing more of them in a future book.

Overall Dreaming of a Duke Like You was a fun read despite the few issues I had with it and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Historical romance is a genre that can lean in hard on the ridiculous. Twins take each other's places all the time, half of the aristocracy seems to be spying on France, and arcane codicils and entailments come to light at the reading of what seems like every will.

Dreaming of a Duke Like You at first feels like it's going to fall into the "bonkers" side of historical romance. Gabriel Cadieux was raised in a foundling home, but he's now the super rich owner of a gambling hell. Vivienne Tremeer is a responsible lady in her twenties whose younger, irresponsible brother has lost more money than he has to said gaming hell. As the book opens, Vivienne approaches Gabriel to try to work out a payment plan. But Gabriel won't forgive the debt and he won't let Vivienne pay it, either. Plus, he's got more important matters on his mind: he's just learned that his mother was married to his father, who just died ... and made Gabriel a duke.

So Gabriel is both a self-made man/gambling hell owner AND a duke. But if you were expecting more bonkers stuff to go down, you'd be wrong. Instead, it turns into slow burn romance where the biggest conflict is whether Gabriel should marry someone who has a bit of a past. He's already scandalous, and Vivienne is slightly scandalous (she spent the night in an inn with a man, but literally nothing happened - they didn't even go up to the bedroom). Now that he's the duke, he has six younger half-sisters to marry off and doesn't want to ruin their prospects more than their sudden illegitimacy has.

We both enjoyed it: the writing is solid, and although it's not particularly progressive it's not problematic, either. We just needed a little something extra for it to be a new favorite.

12-Word Summaries:

Laine: Vivienne is taking care of everyone; can Gabriel take care of her?

Meg: Besides the whole “heir to a dukedom” thing this was low-key fun.

This objective review is based on a complimentary copy of the novel.

To protect her younger brother, Miss Vivienne Tremeer visits Cadieux’s gambling club in hopes of getting the owner to waive the debts. Raised in a foundling home and now proprietor of a successful club, Gabriel Cadieux hasn’t gotten this far by handing out favors…even to pretty ladies. But when he discovers he’s the legitimate heir to a dukedom, he needs a favor of his own: help with the six half sisters that he inherited.

Unfortunately, this story didn’t push the right buttons for me. It got off to a quick start, but then backtracked into a whole lot of set up that took half the book. It felt like too many plot strings and not enough time for the romance to develop. I thought all the characters were too nice and passive; I wanted stronger personalities. I did not care for the end. 2.5 stars rounded to 3.

Dreaming of a Duke Like You is a wonderful start to Sara Bennett’s new Duke of Grantham historical romance series with layered and dynamic characters and a swoon-worthy romance.

After learning that her younger brother has lost a large amount of money gambling, Vivienne appeals to the owner to release her brother from his debt to no avail. But Gabriel, the club owner and a new Duke, soon presents Vivienne with another offer – To clear her brother’s debts, she agrees to help Gabriel’s six half-sisters prepare to enter the ton.

Gabriel had a tragedy-filled childhood and spent much of it in a foundling home. Now the owner of a successful club, he still feels the sting of rejection amongst family and peers. Vivienne experiences the same feelings of rejection, especially since an incident in the past tarnished her reputation. Can I just say I have a little crush on Gabriel? An astute and sometimes ruthless businessman, he is also so incredibly caring. Plus, he loves to read and often reads romance novels! Swoon!! He’s the type of person who always puts others before himself, much like Vivienne does.

The romance between Vivienne and Gabriel is filled with chemistry and sexual tension from their very first meeting, and they have such a wonderful, slow-building love story. I think Gabriel fell in love with Vivienne from the minute he met her when she stormed into his office and started making demands. She has such a fiery spirit and is unlike most society ladies, which draws Gabriel to her. And if you like grumpy-sunshine romances, you’ll definitely love Gabriel and Vivienne’s dynamics.

The secondary characters are as interesting as the protagonists, and I especially liked Gabriel’s two friends and his step-sisters. I’m excited to see if any will be the focus of the next book in the series. I’m also eager to see a bit more redemption of Vivienne’s brother, as it seems he’s changing his ways with the help of Gabriel’s influence. Special thanks to Forever Publishing for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.

An unexpected, unwanted dukedom has owner of a gambling club, Gabriel Cadieux scrambling to reply. His first response is a loud and deafening NO! However that would leave his suddenly acquired six illegitimate half sisters in deep trouble.
Miss Vivienne Tremeer needs Gabriel to excuse her brother’s gambling debts.
A bargain is struck. There’s more to come of course. Vivienne has secrets. Gabriel has hurts.

I received an ARC from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

This cover is SO great, but the book inside of it wasn't really. I really wonder why sometimes I take an ARC of an author that I've never read because the cover is pretty. It's pretty much burned me over and over again. I don't even know why I keep doing it to myself.

I disliked just about all of this book. I didn't like the hero or the heroine. I didn't like the plot. I absolutely despised the end. I am being extra generous giving this two stars because by the end of it I was so ready to throw my kindle. The worst part about it all is the hero is going to court someone else at the END for whatever reason, because the heroine and their love is not worth anything to him, and then he gets hit over the head by this epiphany that he should marry for love, so he chases after her.

After that I didn't even care. I was speed reading to the end because the end couldn't come fast enough for me. I now hope to move on from the bad taste this one left in my mouth.

I had never heard of this author before I started looking into her but she has been writing since 2002. She has 20 or so books. Some of the series are not my genre and the ones that are have only 100 pgs each or so. I have only read 2 books of hers. She can be a bit expensive and as someone that averages 300 books a year I don't like spending that much but she doesn't seem to write a ton in my genre. This one did catch my eye.

This started out a little slow but really picked up. It was a long book which a lot of my authors don't write really long stories so needless to say, she got quite a bit of depth in this. I liked Gabriel and Vivienne. I loved their story. I really liked their characters. Sex was minimal. Got a little hot and heavy but then was not descriptive. Didn't mind too much because it was a well written story. Definitely will try her again.

Typically I try to sit and think about what I liked and didn’t like about a book before I review it. But this one I feel like I’m going to forget everything that happened in a couple hours. The struggle to have the motivation to pick up this book and read it after I had started was real. I had no desire to finish reading the book. I even forgot what had happened because I stopped in the middle of a chapter and didn’t come back to it for days. Briefly sharing my thoughts, I do think the author has a good wiring style. I really had no complaints about the writing itself. I think my issue was that the romance didn’t come across with as much tension and build up that I would have liked. I also think this story might have been better if it was more of a marriage of convenience than forced proximity. I just didn’t get the connection that I was hoping for. Overall, it wasn’t bad and I would probably read this author again, I just wanted more from it.

I’m new to the author and this is the beginning of a new series for her. Gabriel Cadieux has gone from a founding home to running a successful gaming club. He learns he is the heir to a Dukedom. He isn’t interested until he learns that his six half sisters will lose all rank and position without him. Vivienne Tremeer has approached Gabriel about forgiving her brother's gambling debts. The request is first denied and then he instead makes her an offer. He will forgive the debts if she will help prepare his rowdy sisters more for society.

I liked Vivienne very much. And parts of the story are fun. I love that Vivienne delights in the sisters. Gabriel is supposed to be a rake but is cowed by his grandmother which didn’t fit him. I wanted him to stand up to his grandmother and society more strongly. I read a lot of historical romance and although this is enjoyable I wasn’t on the edge of my seat or swooning.

I’m assuming the series will continue with romances for the sisters. Thank you to NetGalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for the ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review. (3.5 Stars)

This was more like 3.5 stars. I really liked the story and the characters and I would read the next book. But I feel the spicy rug was pulled out from under me. It was like the door was left slightly open and then slammed shut and I hate that. If it’s closed it’s closed and that’s that. If it’s open, excellent! Yes please but don’t get me all excited with details and then tel me it’s the next morning 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

Gabriel Cadieux is the owner of a gambling club and the new Duke of Grantham. He inherited an estate in debt and six illegitimate sisters. Vivienne Tremeer lives on the edge of society with some scandalous whispers about her reputation. Her brother Will put his inheritance in jeopardy with his gambling and debt to the Cadieux Gambling Club. Vivienne's willingness to pay her brother's debt leads Gabriel to offer her the job of preparing his sisters for society, especially the oldest with her come out. Neither expected the attraction and to fall in love, but her past and his duty to the title and family makes it impossible to be together. Gabriel has lived most of his life without a title. Does the man still have a chance for happiness? Lots of interference, good and bad
and the sisters are so sweet and funny. Mild open bedroom door.

Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.

Gabriel Cadieux grew up an abandoned orphan at St. Ninians, becoming a successful business man by his own wits and hard work, running Cadieux's, a popular gaming hell. Vivienne Tremeer confronts him in his office one day, hoping to persuade him to forgive the gambling debts of her young, impressionable brother. From their first meeting they rubbed each other the wrong way... but of course, where there is friction... there are also sparks!

Vivienne failed in her endeavours; she and her brother Will are living on the tenuous good will of her aunt, after they escaped from their home with their neglectful mother and her spendthrift wastrel second husband, who is looking to steal the scant remains of Will's estate from him because of a codicil to their father's will. Vivienne is trying what she can to help Will and prevent the loss of his inheritance until he reaches his majority in three years. But she is stymied by her own sullied reputation, because of her stepfather's manipulation of an unfortunate mistake.

A new opportunity for her to help Will recover from his debts arises again when Gabriel suddenly finds himself the legal heir to the title of the Duke of Grantham. It turns out that the Duke who kept Gabriel's mother as one of his mistresses had actually secretly married her, and then abandoned her and their son, because of the expectation that he marry a lady of his own standing. Bowing to pressure from Society and likely his mother, he married Lady Felicia, becoming a bigamist, and over the years had 6 children - all girls, none of them able to inherit. On his death, the truth of his marriage to Gabriel's mother came out, causing quite the scandal for the family, causing Lady Felicia to take to her bed, abandon the care of her daughters, and causing Gabriel's half sisters to be labeled illegitimate. His grandmother, the Dowager Duchess steps in and takes control of the family, hounding Gabriel to take responsibility of the impoverished estate, and family, and restore the family's coffers and standing in Society. He finds himself suddenly with family, and an overwhelming burden of responsibility and expectations.

Let's also keep in mind that he is now being maneuvered and manipulated by a woman who knew of his existence, and left him to grow up in an orphanage, abandoned by his own family. The irony is now she is haranguing him to do his duty as the Duke, to his family.

Gabriel seems out of his element dealing with his new role as Duke, having to deal with Society on a different level, and being a brother to 6 resentful, neglected, wild girls ranging in ages from child to young women, and tasked with the daunting duty to provide for them and guide them into being young ladies. Not only that, but he is also thrust forcefully by his gimlet grandmama into courting the perfect future duchess, negotiated and arranged by the Dowager herself.

Gabriel and Vivienne now cross paths in the ballrooms and drawing rooms of Society, and Gabriel realizes that Vivienne has the social skills that he and his sister lack, and proposes a deal with her - that he will forgive her brother's debt and help Will, if Vivienne will help give some polish to the sisters and guide them into at least being able to produce the facade of being proper young ladies.

Of course, being a romance, Gabriel and Vivienne come to admire each other and develop a friendship that threatens to become more... except for the barriers of his grandmother's expectations, Vivienne's own soiled reputation, and the interference of others, including her weak, clueless mother, wastrel stepfather, amongst others.

I found this to be written well, and was an enjoyable read, with good dialogue and characters, especially the secondary characters and their interactions with each other. But I found the story lost me in the latter half, as I became quite frustrated with Gabriel. For a such a self-made man, who seemed so sure of himself at the beginning of the story, he very quickly lost his focus to become quite the puppet with his grandmother pulling the strings. He gave her all the power in the relationship, when really, he was the one with the title, the money, and should have had the power - especially considering she was the one that manipulated things so that her son hid his first marriage, engaged in a bigamist marriage, abandoning his first wife and son, and she knew about Gabriel but still abandoned him to the orphanage, ignoring his existence until she was forced to deal with him. Then she dares to exhort him to do his duty to his family???? What a hypocrite - and damn Gabriel for giving her that power to dictate to him! She should have been shamed by him, and threatened with isolation and a bare allowance, in a Dower house in some far off estate. Also, considering the ills she did to Lady Felicia and her now de-legitimized granddaughters - where was Felicia's family in this. If Felicia had any family left, they should have turned around and sued the estate or Granny dear for fraud considering they would have breached any marriage settlements/contracts when the married prior Duke courted and wed Felicia... the scandal broth was put together and stirred by a hand other than that of Gabriel's so it was wrong that he allowed that witch to manipulate and maneuver him the way he did.

Luckily he found at least one of his testes again and failed to fall in with the Dowager's plans and chose happiness instead, with Vivienne.

Another story that just reminds one that it is very healthy to trim off some limbs of the various family trees.

Steam level: 2. Slow-burn, with open door sex toward the end, not graphic.
Tropes: gaming hell owner vs, well-bred lady, MC fish out of water
Publication date: October 10

No surprises, but this works well as light-hearted escapism. I'm a fan of HR's featuring MC's who are successful despite rough beginnings, and found both characters here to be likable, with strong chemistry. Most of the secondary characters are memorable and well-developed, with Gabriel's six sisters, in particular, bringing humor and warmth to the proceedings. Dialog is generally sharp and the writer's style is engaging without being overdone.

On the flipside, the pacing is leisurely at times, with not enough focus on Vivienne and Gabriel's "enemies to friends to lovers" transition in the first 2/3. The set-up takes a while to develop, with more repetition of ideas and interior monologging than necessary. The minor subplot of Vivienne and her cousin's involvement in writing a bestselling book feels shoehorned in. There's also a lack of comeuppance for a couple characters, which is one of my pet peeves.

I frankly thought Gabriel's storyline was more compelling than Vivienne's. I found myself skimming through scenes that dwelled on her ruination, the feckless man who ruined her, and her relatives, who weren't as dynamic as Gabriel's sisters and his grandmother. I wanted to know more about Gabriel's family's adjustments to each other and to society.

However, I did like how heartfelt the HEA was . The emotion between the MC's definitely came through at the end.

I read an advanced reader copy of this book and this is my voluntary review. Opinions are my own. Thanks to the author and Net Galley for this opportunity.

Sara has been on my radar for an author to try. I decided to try this latest release. I thought the beginning was really good. Gabriel won a gambling hell basically came from nothing (at least he thought he did) and after his real father died he became the next Duke. He also inherited his 6 half sisters (in which the girls mom's marriage to Gabriel's father was actually declared bigamy!) he didn't want them to grow up destitute. Just blame Gabriel's situation on his grandma. Vivienne wants her young brothers gambling debts dropped and Gabriel declines. He ends up needing her to help with his sisters and him to get in society standards.

This was only a sweet cute read for me. I would've like more scenes together with Gabriel and his sisters. It was too low angst for me in which we really didn't see any issue happening with Vivienne's step father. Just toward the last 30ish % was lack luster for me. I was just expecting more climatic plot. I'll still give Sara another read.

I received this book at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Vivienne Tremeer and her brother are in London, trying to make a go of things and hide from their stepfather while living on the suffrage of their aunt. Too bad Vivian’s brother gets in with the wrong crowd, precipitating her need to go to the gambling then her brother is in debt to an ask for leniency… obviously that doesn’t go as planned.

Gabriel Cadieux has become wealthy and successful by not backing down, so when the delectable spinster sister of one of his clients shows up, he is not swayed.

Lucky for Vivienne, Gabriel soon finds out that he is the legitimate heir to a dukedom that just so happens to have sex feisty, unmarried half sisters included with it!

Time to strike a deal! He calls Vivienne, the most proper lady he knows, and strikes a bargain to absolve her brothers death if she becomes his sisters governess and get them ready for society!

Are full of lots of a family drama on the side for both Vivienne and Gabriel, the story had a lot going on, and made it hard to focus on the growing attraction in relationship between these two.

I was also surprised with so many side characters, like the brother and the sisters and the dowager duchess, that I didn’t really get a good well rounded feeling any of these characters to help add personal touch to the story.

In the end, I was happy and contented with the HEA presented, but it was a long and sometimes arduous path to get there.

Thank you do you forever Romance for my arc review copy. Opinions are my own.

Thank you to Forever and Hachette Audio for the audiobook code. These opinions are my own.

This is a story of two people with scandalous backgrounds living at the edge of the ton. Cadieux owns a gambling hell and unexpectedly comes into a dukedom saddled with debt. Vivienne was caught in a scandalous situation and refused to marry her way out of it. Now the two might be able to help each other.

This was a well written story. I found it enjoyable for a quick read. But I don't know if it's one that will stick with me. I particularly appreciated both main character's love of family and motivations. And I found the audiobook incredibly well narrated.

I recommend this for folks like me who love historical romances.

THOUGHTS:

I don’t read a lot of historical romance but guys, I really liked this one!! Every time I picked it up to read, I was hooked.

Gabriel & Vivienne’s relationship was so good. The tension with those almost kisses in the beginning-middle of the book.. I was dying!! It definitely was a slow burn love story for them. ❤️

Gabriel was swoon worthy. I loved that he stepped up for his half-sisters. I loved the bit of found family going on. Vivienne was great. She was protective of her brother & tried to help him get rid of his gambling debts. They both had that fierce love for their family and I really liked that!!

Overall, great start to a new series! I’ll definitely be on the look out for the next book. 😍

After discovering that her younger brother has lost a fortune gambling, Vivienne Tremeer storms into Cadieux’s club to force the owner to release him from the debt. She never expects to find herself enthralled by the handsome owner, who happens to be the new Duke of Grantham. Gabriel Cadieux was raised as an orphan in a foundling home, and has fought his way to become an owner of an up and coming gaming hell. He's now comfortable in his wealth, so discovering he is the legitimate heir to a bankrupt dukedom, which comes with 6 - now illegitimate - sisters, Gabriel knows that if he will be able to join haute society, he'll need help. Seeing Vivienne as the perfect tutor for himself and his sisters, he offers to clear the debt, and train Will in working in the hell, as long as she quietly helps them. But Gabriel never expected that he would see Vivienne as anything other than a beautiful hindrance, and definitely not as a potential duchess.

I adore Sara's books, and as soon as I saw that I could download this from NetGalley, I knew I couldn't stop myself immediately reading it. Vivienne and Gabriel were phenomenal heroes, and their romance was perfect for the story. Neither was the usual character, both misfits in the ton, but they loved fiercely, and would do anything to help those they cared about. Gabriel had two friends from his childhood that meant the world to him, and though he had never had true siblings, he couldn't let his sisters be left in ruin. Vivienne was the same - her brother was throwing away everything to bad friends, and she stormed a hell in the night to fight for him - not something the usual society lady would do. I think that was the main reason why Gabriel was so drawn to her, and vice versa. They saw kindred spirits in each other, and their personalities were so complementary. A fantastic start to a new series, and I hope that Vivienne and Gabriel make re-appearances in the following books!

This was an enjoyable story from Sara Bennett. I loved the characters of Vivianne and Gabrielle.
She was raised properly as a young lady. When her father died and her mother remarried, her step father made her life a nightmare.
He was raised in an orphanage. A good good one where he received a good education. After making his way in life he is informed that his mother was married to his father, making him legitimate and the new Duke of Grantham.
Their paths cross before he becomes a Duke and then of course afterwards.
You can feel the attraction between them. They are both self sacrificing people and put their attraction behind them to put their families first.
This was a good story. Very sweet, very mild. There is no real danger or mystery, just an angry grandmother. So there was nothing really to keep your attention held to the book.

Dreaming of a Duke Like You by Sara Bennett is a wonderful story of two kind humans who have been dragged through life. Vivienne may be the daughter of a Baron, but her reckless mistake a year ago left her reputation in shatters to escape that and her hellish step-father, she finds a home with a grumpy aunt. Gabriel on the other hand was tossed out after the death of his mother by his grandmother for being illegitimate. Only after the death of his father, does he and the world find out he is actually legitimate and his six half siblings are not. Vivienne and Gabriel find their way to each other through unique circumstances and have to fight to stay in each other’s arms.

This book was engaging, funny and left me wanting more. It is low spice, and really isn’t spicy until the last 20% of the book or so. I hope to read more about the siblings in the future!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC. all opinions are my own.

I received this book for free, this does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review

A wave of dizzy nausea washed over him. He could hear his heart beating fast. He watched, speechless, as the lawyer bowed obsequiously low before him and called him “Your Grace.”

Given up to a foundling house when he was three years old, Gabriel has had to make his own way in the world. Winning a gambling hell at twenty-two, he has amassed quite the wealth now five years later and apparently a dukedom. It turns out that his father did marry his mother and he is the legal heir to the Grantham title, much to the surprise of his grandmother, who delivered him to the orphanage when his mother died. Gabriel doesn't want the title but with six half-sisters that need him to help get them accepted in society and a dukedom that needs his financial expertise, he can't refuse it. But he's going to need some help, too.

Gabriel Cadieux, the gambling hell owner with the heart of ice, and the new Duke of Grantham. And he was looking back at her.

Currently staying with her aunt in London, escaping her stepfather and some scandal attached to her name, Vivienne finds out that her younger brother Will is in heavy debt to a gambling hell. Not wanting Will to jeopardize his inheritance that he will come into in three years, she takes a night trip to the hell and tries to reason with the owner but finds no quarter there, instead some attraction. When it's discovered that Gabriel is the new Duke of Grantham, he then comes to her with a plan to forgive her brother's dept if she helps his sisters learn how to succeed in society.

Gabriel leaned down to whisper in her ear. “We are like two peas in a pod, are we not, Miss Tremeer? Both of us playing our parts and hiding our true selves from the world. But I see you and I think you see me.”

Dreaming of a Duke Like You was a sedate historical romance that I wished the leads had spent more time together. The first half flowed babbling creek well with introducing readers to Vivienne, Gabriel, and their world and circumstances they were currently battling with. There were times that it felt like a primer for the future series, two bestfriends for Gabriel, along with his six sisters, and a brother and friendly cousin for Vivienne, get decently filled out stories to tease interest for future books (along with helping to fill out worldbuilding). Vivienne and Gabriel meetup a few times and they have gentle friendship chemistry, which leads Gabriel to coming up with the idea that Vivienne could help his sisters in favor of him forgetting her brother's debt (and getting her brother to help out at his club). This deal is struck around the half-way point and the second half we get to see them together more.

There had been something missing in his life for a long time, and it was only now that he understood what it was. Vivienne Tremeer.

This was a softly toned story, Gabriel was a quietly goes about his way with some vulnerabilities in his new position, which causes the reason “Why can't they be together?”. His grandmother has the Dowager battleaxe personality and insists that he must marry a titled, no hint of scandal to her, debutante of her choice. So while Gabriel starts to admit to himself that he has feelings for Vivienne, he feels he can't marry her for the sake of his sisters' success in the ton. Vivienne is a Baronet's daughter but there is a whiff of scandal that followed her from Cornwall that she spent a night alone with a man. It's a valid reason that works but it gets dragged out too long; I'm talking at 85% Gabriel agrees to his grandmother that he will marry her bride choice. The latter second half loses some of it's momentum because of this dragged out, Gabriel keeps dithering leaving Vivienne doing really nothing but waiting for him to get it together (maybe reality accurate, lol).

Then the new Duke of Grantham had said, his gruff voice full of anger and resolve, She is mine.

The last ten percent delivers the first bedroom scene (only brief kisses prior) as Vivienne decides to take what she can before she has to leave back home and the last five percent has Gabriel's sisters giving him a talking to get him to eventual deliver the HEA. I wish Gabriel had come to the decision more himself but it was in the vein of his more subdued personality. There's an epilogue that jumps a year and more HEA-ness. If you don't mind your leads not spending a lot of time together, especially the first half and a latter second half that felt a bit fumbling but are looking for more of a gentle tone and characters, this does deliver those two aspects.

Gabriel Cadieux owns a profitable gaming establishment in London. He receives news that he is the heir to a debt-ridden dukedom and guardian to six sisters. Gabriel grudgingly accepts his new responsibilities. However, he needs to find someone who can help his siblings integrate within Polite Society. Gabriel believes Vivienne Tremeer will be perfect for the job. She is perfect for his sisters but wrong for him. Which will Gabriel choose? His responsibilities? Or his heart?

Vivienne Tremeer is the daughter of a baronet. When her brother loses at gambling, and has no way to pay, she approaches Gabriel to forgive his debt. Instead, the infuriating man offers Vivienne a deal – if she agrees to teach his sisters how to navigate the ton, he will clear the debt owed. She never expected to fall in love with him. However, Vivienne knows her blemished reputation is wrong for Gabriel’s family. Will Vivienne do the right thing by giving Gabriel up?

It is always fun for me when I see a hero share my youngest son’s name. Other mothers may find it uncomfortable or unnerving, but not me. And no, I did not name my son after a book character (my husband forbade it. Lol). I could not help but love Cadieux. He started out with nothing, a boy from a foundling home, who managed to turn his situation around by a game of chance. I like how Gabriel never forgot his two childhood friends, also from the same foundling home. He included them in his new life, both as a gaming hell owner and then later as a duke. What I adore the most about Gabriel is his hobby. He likes to read… and not what others would expect. Gabriel likes reading romance books, a first for me.

I could not help but empathize with Vivienne. She always put her loved ones’ needs before her own while dealing with her own worries and troubles. I admire Vivienne’s willingness to take action to protect her brother’s future. She had limits on what she was willing to do. Even when things looked bleak or helpless, Vivienne never considered debasing herself. What I like the most about Vivienne is that she never treated Gabriel like an outsider. She understood him better than their peers ever would.

DREAMING OF A DUKE LIKE YOU is the first book in Sara Bennett’s historical romance series, DUKE OF GRANTHAM. I am new to this author’s works. The story’s premise is what interested me. I have a fondness for the “gaming hell owner” angle in historical romances. Some of my all-time favorite stories have that aspect in them. I cannot wait to read further books in this series.

Nitpicks, I do have a few. One, Vivienne and Will’s stepfather. I believe that could have been touched on further. Honestly, I anticipated him being Gabriel’s final roadblock to deal with. Instead, it feels like the entire situation fell between the cracks, forgotten. Unless the author plans to save that for Will’s story.

The second one is Longley’s character. I understand he is Gabriel’s nemesis. He seemed to only come out to cause some tension or problem for Gabriel, only to melt back into the background. Nothing more is done with him, no final confrontation, nothing. I wonder, like above, if the author plans to use Longley for Charles’ book, which makes sense.
