4.5/5 stars -- This is a great guide for taking photographs with the Canon T3i. For each setting that Jeff reviews there is a corresponding graphic to show you how to set it on the camera - this is extremely helpful. There are also several examples of a photograph with one setting vs that same photograph taken with another setting. Again, these types of examples are so helpful. I am considering using Lightroom 4 to edit some of my photos and it emphasizes taking photos in RAW format to better edit them whereas this guide emphasizes taking photos in highest quality JPEG format. I wish maybe the pros and cons of RAW vs JPEG would have been discussed more; however, the purpose of the book is to take the best photographs with what you have - so in that regard it's an excellent book filled with many, many wonderful examples.

MUST READ for any beginning photographer, and anyone that has this camera. I can't express enough how well-written this book is! It's well laid out, tackles aperature, ISOs, shutter speed and continually builds on the concepts as the book moves along, allowing the reader to constantly re-learn the concepts. I thought I was a lost cause until reading his book. Packed full of shots illustrating when the different settings should be used and providing a frame of reference. I flew through this in a few hours and can't wait to start playing with the settings!

If you have been a holiday "happy snapper" always using automatic settings on a point and shoot and have just upgraded to your first DSLR, then you cannot beat this manual for demystifying talk of f-stops, depth of field, "fast" lenses, etc. For the beginner with an interest in learning how to improve their photography by making the most of the camera in their hands (and the eyes in their head) this is the perfect starting point, with plenty of colour photographs, with the settings used and the reasons behind them.

Really good primer on the t3i camera. Jeff's text is easy to follow and doesn't assume much prior knowledge which helped me feel more comfortable. This is a library checkout for me and I won't be purchasing it since it is so basic. But if you are a beginner with this camera, you should really check out this book.
