I find somewhat difficult to rate this novella. I read it because Cynthia Eden has talked about Ms Reus's next book. Before buying it, I wanted to gauge if I might like her way of writing.

Color me surprised when I realized that this story is very, very similar to Bound in Sin.
It spoiled the reading for me.

Second Harlequin read. Sure, the sex was great and clearly the most important focus of these short novellas, but I feel like it's the only focus: to generate situations where they get all hot and bothered. Or taken. Or dominated. I wonder if non-sci-fi readers feel like this when they read a normal sci-fi book. Like someone going "oh, don't run up the stairs, Jesus!" while watching a horror movie.

Do you like sexy vampires and werewolves with non-stop action and romance? Destined Mate is a novella you can sink your teeth into then!

Two hundred years ago Angela Lavigne fled her home and her love when she was turned into a vampire against her will. Knowing her lover’s intense hate of vampires she couldn’t take the chance of him killing her, so she disappeared never expecting to see him again. When Angela believes her friend and fellow vampire is kidnapped though by a pack of werewolves she storms their keep only to come face to face with the one man that has the capability of destroying both her life and her heart.
Knox is a powerful and fearsome werewolf alpha, titles well deserved with a thousand years of life, but he never forgot the young women he fell in love with centuries ago. When she suddenly appears in his home, Knox is not going to let her disappear on him again and will use any means necessary to keep her in his arms, including using the irresistible attraction between them to remind her of what it can be like once more. But can Knox convince Angela that he has changed his stance on vampires since her turning, assure her that they can overcome vampire/werewolf discrimination and prove that she’s his Destined Mate?

What can I say about Destined Mates besides that I loved it?!?! It was a fast-paced, sexy and all together captivating novella that I was able to finish in one night. Katie Reus builds a vivid paranormal world where vampire and werewolves have deep seated hate but a shaky truce, the dynamics and politics of the two races was fascinating and added an important element to the story and Knox’s relationship with Angela.

I always find it more believable when a couple featured in a novella have a past history together; this makes the fast-paced relationship realistic and still gives the couple plenty of time to work out their conflicts and issues. In this case, Knox needs to understand why Angela left him and Angela needs to believe that Knox has lost his intrinsic hate for the Vampire race while trusting that discrimination in his pack will not come between them in the future. An irrevocable bond formed between them two hundred years ago and despite their lengthy separation passion and desire still flame high. I was intrigued by both characters right away, Angela’s willingness to face danger and possible death for a friend and Knox’s leadership and dedication to the woman he loves. Katie Reus got the part of alpha hero just right with a strong, dominating male who has just enough charm and give. She gives readers a sensual romance and a couple that you can easily fall in love with.

Add to that the action and tension, you end up with a fabulous paranormal romance with plenty of spice. I’m looking forward to the next novella in this series!

My Review:

As a human, Angela had been Knox's lover and she was well aware of his deep-seeded hatred of vampires. So when she was brutally attacked and turned into one, she didn't want to put either of them through that trauma knowing he would more than likely kill her as a result. That was 90 years ago and Angela hasn't seen him since and has no idea that he changed all of his opinions after she was changed. The only thing that she knows is that Knox's pack is holding one of her best friends and fellow vampires and she has no intention of letting them kill her.

The book starts with Angela infiltrating the werewolf compound, and wow, this girl has some moves. She's fast, quick-thinking, and incredibly strong. She also realizes when she's beat and knows when to back down. I love that she's a really strong vampire and daywalker. For me, that made the romance between her and Knox more viable.

The chemistry between Knox and Angel (as he calls her) is instantaneous and incredible. It may have been 90 years, but you would never guess it from the way that they react to each other. If there was a single thing that I could change about this book, I would have liked to see more interaction between them. This is a short novella and the chemistry works because of their history. I just felt like it was all a little too short between the two of them.

Overall the book was a fun and entertaining read. It's really short, but there is a lot packed into this little book. It's a great overview of the way that this world works, within the pack and within the vampire clan...as we get to see the leader of the vampires, Titus, too. There is TONS of action...both fighting and sexual. It's quick-paced and very easy to read. I am looking forward to book two in this series, Protector's Mate, which is about Alaric, Knox's second. We get to see fabulous glimpses of him in this book as he helps to soothe Angela when Knox needs his focus.

When Angela is turned into a vampire against her will, her only thought is to run. The love of her life hates vampires so instead of confronting him and seeing that hate in his eyes, she decides to leave everything she knows and head out on her own. But when her friend is kidnapped, Angela has to go back to the one place she never thought she'd go again.

When alpha werewolf, Knox sets his eyes on Angela after ninety years, his feelings come rushing back. He never knew why Angela left and had never really got over it. When the head of her vampire family demands her return, Knox realises he can never let her go again and decides to fight anyone to the death who ties to take her away.

In such a short novella everything has to happen at lightning speed but the author does a wonderful job at keeping it as believable as possible. It's such a well contained story that I believed every word, which was helped by the great pacing.

The main characters, Angela and Knox, are fab. Angela is my kind of gal - feisty, independent and passionate. Knox is a born leader, slightly arrogant, but expected for an Alpha, and also very sexy. I loved that Angela was a woman who could take care of herself and that Knox had a caring side. They complimented each other brilliantly.

There are a few sensual moments but nothing really too explicit, which I liked. It made their coming together more real for me and my heart fluttered a little at their rediscovered love.

VERDICT:

"Destined Mate" is a lovely, well written novella. I really enjoyed it and didn't want it to end. In such a short novella it's bursting with action, passion, heat and great characters. A very enjoyable bite-sized paranormal romance.

3 'Destined' Stars

Dual POV
Shifter Romance
Novella
Standalone Series

Destined Mate by Katie Reus is a Second-Chance Romance between human to vampire Angela and Knox, a powerful Alpha werewolf.

This is a novella, so there's not much time to fully draw in readers and explore the histories between Knox and Angela. But, it does succeed, if only briefly. Just not as much as it could have, say if it shifted between the past at the pair's first meeting and the very tense present where Angela is caught trespassing on Knox's land. She had no idea it was his property and she genuinely fears for her life. The dual POV allows us to hone in on the misunderstanding between the pair. Indeed, Angel, as she's called by Knox, is certain he will kill her. Even though she has has become a fighter in strength and demeanor in order to protect herself all these years. Her heart is not so strong. Knox is more aware of his undiminished feelings for her and of the wasted years. This loss is very poignant.

Brief, hot and a HEA.

(All these 3 star ratings for Shifter Romances seem harsh. However, I want these 3 Stars to signify 'Good/Enjoyed' but don't make it to a 4 Star = Very Good or a 5 Star = Excellent rating.)

Ladies, gentleman, and genders of indeterminate origins……read this story. It was HOT!! Very well written, with a kick ass heroine that I whole heartedly approved of. Angela was fearless, loyal and not afraid to throw hands with the big boys. She was also intelligent enough to stop and weigh her options and not wade in recklessly, unless that was the only way. Knox was a superb example of what an Alpha should be. Dominant, compassionate when the occasion called for it and ruthless when he needed to be. He was also not afraid to follow his heart. *sigh* There is also a great little story connecting all the sexy hotness, with enough action and drama to keep you on the edge of your seat for the short time it takes to gobble this little gem up. I could definitely see myself quickly becoming addicted to this group of shifters. I will certainly be a die hard fan of Katie’s from now on. Good job!

This is a short novella, so this will be a short review. Destined Mate gives you all of the good stuff without any of the fluff. There was just enough back story to make me interested and invested in the characters, and there were quite a few hot and heavy scenes that I greatly enjoyed.

I would have liked for there to have been a bit more groundwork laid for the fight between the vampires and werewolves, but overall I liked the story. The characters were easy to relate to, the romance was well-paced and exactly what I expect from a Harlequin book, and the world is well-drawn for a story that is quite short.

If you're a fan of 18+ paranormal romances, definitely pick this one up. You'll love it.

I loved the lead female character in this book. She was very quick, very strong, not quick to blindly trust and she kicked some serious butt. She was a strategic thinker. Add in a sexy werewolf shifter and this book had it all for me.

this is a novella so it was super short but it was fine! i think it's funny that the mc's met after years being apart because of a simple miscommunication between friends but hey, that friend is the best (accidental) wingman.

Angela dated Knox, a wolf shifter and Alpha pack leader, some 90 years ago when she was still a human. And even then, he loved to rage about how much he hated soulless vampires. But then she's turned into a vampire against her will and instead of confronting Knox and being rejected she runs away and hides from him. Now, she's face-to-face with him and the passion, attraction and even love are stronger than ever. And Knox doesn't care that she's a vampire. But her coven isn't about to give her up...she's strong and has rare powers for a vampire. But will Knox's pack accept her as the mate to the alpha?

This was good, but as I've found with all of this author's short stories (haven't read anything longer yet) there are little strings that never get tied up. For example, Knox is in awe at Angela's abilities and ponders how she must have been turned by someone very old and powerful...but it's never really explained who or why it's relevant. Even their separation for 90 frickin years!, isn't really wrapped up. They just let that go as though it wasn't important...and I could believe it since they're immortal but make sure the reader knows that's the reason it isn't important. It's just a drop in the bucket of time. As it was, it just felt like neither of them cared, which flies in the face of how much they supposedly love each other. It's a good fun read, but these things need tying up.

'Twilight' has it wrong. Apparently, werewolves metabolisms aren't as fast as we were led to believe because Angela, our leading lady, manages to drop them, quite skillfully I might add, with tranquilizers as she breaks into their compound to rescue her friend. Despite that, she still manages to get herself caught and finds herself right back in the arms of the love of her life (who she has been hiding from for 90 years). The only problem? He is a werewolf, the leader of the largest pack of werewolves in North America, and she is a vampire. Talk about racial differences.

This book drops you right smack in the middle of some fast action and then proceeds to run you right into some hot, steamy sex scenes. And if that wasn't enough, you get thrown right back into some action. This author keeps it coming non-stop and, at only sixty-one pages, I had the story finished before my heartbeat slowed back down.

When Angela was turned into a vampire she disappeared from Knox's life before he could realize what she had become. Since he harbored a personal hate for vampires, Angela was afraid he wouldn't accept her for what she was. Now, nearly a century later, the two come face to face again and must confront their feelings. With the history between the two main characters, the action and the romance are both believable and very fast paced, and kept me involved in the story from the very beginning. Angela's reticence is also realistic. She's spent ninety years believing one thing, only to be told and expected to believe without a doubt, something else in a very short time span.

With such a short story, we don't get much more than a glimpse of other characters in the plot, but the main characters are very well drawn and intriguing enough that they hold your attention. Knox is a sexy, dominant man who is determined to win back the only woman he ever considered making his mate, and Angela is a cautious but intelligent and willful woman. She is willing to let Knox have the upper hand, but only if it suits her.

From the beginning you can tell how strongly these two felt about each other back when they were in a relationship, and ninety years later it's just as obvious that their feelings haven't changed. Those feelings have also never been dealt with by either of them. The author manages to convey all of this very skillfully, without drowning us in back story.

Destined Mate flows so smoothly that I was turning the last page before I even realized that I was at the end. With the vampire/werewolf politics, the hint of the possibility of war brewing on the horizon, the passionate exchanges between Knox and Angela and the non-stop action (whether romantic, political or physical), this book kept me hooked and made me a fan of this author and this series. More please.

Destined Mate was a sensual feel good read despite the tension filled confrontations between the werewolves and vampires. The connection between the two main characters ignited the moment both met up after ninety years of separation. Given the amount of time apart I really thought they would have a harder time reconnecting, yet in this novella I saw how true love can really stand the test of time. Cliche maybe, but it worked for Knox and Angela's story. Another theme that stood out to me was the heroes ability to grow past his strong prejudice towards vampires. True, he had good reason to hold a passionate grudge against the species, but when his human lover is attacked, turned and then leaves him because she can not bring herself to be in his presence for what she is, he learns one can not be judged by what they are. I found this lesson the be a great example and reminder of how I can better myself and this is why I enjoy this genre so much. The sense of family and belonging brought the plot together and was topped off with the reunion of to lovers, two hearts, and two destined mates. The story was beautifully wrapped up by the end and made me want to look up more stories from author Katie Reus!

SETTING:
Destined Mate takes place on the expansive property of the most powerful Alpha werewolf in the United States.

WRITING:
Katie Reus is a fabulous story teller! She knows how to deliver a wonderful tale of love, strength and finally happiness. The true back bones of the genre!

CHARACTERS:
Once human and now a vampire, Angela flees Alpha werewolf Knox's side in fear he would hate her-as he hated all vampires-for what she had become against her will. I found her to be a strong heroine and she demonstrates this with her determination to save a friend in need even if it means stepping into hot water to do so. She brings to the story a passion for life and ultimately a passion to recapture what she at first refused to acknowledge and what her heart truly wanted-love and acceptance from the one and only man that could give it to her. And Knox is definitely a perfect match. He knew exactly what she needed and how to guide Angela towards admitting to herself it was okay to let down her guards and attempt to rekindle their once untamable passion for one another. He was the right amount of protectiveness and dark sexiness to equal a hot alpha hero!

LAST THOUGHTS:
I look forward to another Katie Reus Nocturne Cravings novella! She brought my attention to Harlequin's paranormal Ebook series and I will be sure to keep up with all her upcoming releases. I loved her smooth story telling and ability to weave a tale of danger and sensual passion!

DESTINED MATE by Katie Reus

DESTINED MATE is another novella written by erotic romance author Katie Reus. For 90 years, werewolf Alpha leader Knox has been searching for the only woman he has ever loved-Angela ‘Angel’ Lavigne-a vampire. But the vampires and werewolves have been at war for thousands of years. When she appears on wolf-pack property searching for a missing female vampire, it is Knox who takes a stand, hoping to lure the run-away vampire, back to his den.

90 years earlier Angela Lavigne was human, in love with the Alpha of the American pack, but a bite from a vampire changed her life. Knowing that Knox and his entire pack despised and hated all vampires, Angela ran for her life, never telling Knox what had happened. But a recently turned female vampire is missing and was reportedly held captive by one of the strongest and fiercest wolf packs. Hoping to exact her rescue, Angela enters wolf territory, and to her surprise, her ex-lover and the Alpha Knox is waiting.

Knox has been searching for Angela for almost a century. Tracking her across America and into Alaska, he had hopes of claiming his mate. But the elusive female was always, a few steps ahead. Hoping to finally claim Angela as his mate, Knox must fight Titus, the leader of Angela’s coven of vampires, for the rights. Both males claim rights to Angela, but Angela has feelings for only one man. When Knox proves that he is the more powerful male, he finally lays claim what he has always known-that Angela has been and always will be his mate.

But life in a wolf-pack is never easy, especially when the others must now submit to a vampire-as female alpha. With the knowledge that their leader has taken a vampire as mate, animosity and anger grow when the Alpha must leave on a business trip. Returning hope to find his mate has been threatened, Knox must enforce pack laws and banish the young pup for his behavior.

Destined Mate is a quick read-a short story. The attraction between Knox and Angela is mutual as well as fast-paced and energetic. There is no build-up or teasing as the storyline progresses, as the couple know exactly what they want. And once again, Katie ensures there is a story between the sexual encounters, and a HEA for our hero and his mate.

Angela is on what has the potential to be a suicide mission and possibly start a war between vampires and werewolves. To some this might be considered a really stupid thing to do, but to Angela this mission is worth the risk. The plan is simple – just bypass forest security and rush the prison doubling as a mansion where the werewolves live and rescue her friend. After that she has no clue what to do next in her rescue attempt, but at least she won't have to make that decision alone once she finds out who exactly the Alpha of the pack is.

Knox is at once shocked, frustrated, and elated that Angela quite literally came crashing back into his life. While he may have the chance to finally reclaim what they once had, first he needs to understand why she ran in the first place and convince they can have it again. Unfortunately, the calvary is coming to rescue the rescuer and it will be up to Angela to decide who's team she wants to be on.

Non-stop from beginning to end, the story is high-octane action both in and out of the bedroom. While the length may have been a little on the short side for a storyline that had a lot of potential for growth, I still enjoyed the punch it packed with these two head-strong main characters. Even more I enjoyed the forbidden aspect of their relationship. Angela has the attitude of a rogue vampire and the confidence of a day-walker to boot, which makes this female the perfect match for the extremely Alpha werewolf Knox who like to exert a little control in the bedroom. Needless to say each can handle whatever the other dishes out – bites and all.

A great read if you're looking to escape into a sexy paranormal romance and finish in one sitting.

I found Destined Mate to be a quick and enjoyable read that fit well into my love of the paranormal genre. Though short, author Katie Reus spins a well told and highly descriptive tale of love - forbidden between werewolf and vampire. Add a dose of sizzle, an action packed fight and destiny - no matter how against the grain it may be - and you have one heck of a story.

Knox is a sensual, strong and stubborn Alpha werewolf. Angela is a strong-headed vampire, who was turned a century ago. At one time their love for one another was a blazing fire that could not be extinguished. The love and desire that they shared for one another was like none other. Then, when Angela is turned into a vampire, she runs, knowing Knox's extreme hatred for vampires. Both hearts shattered and broken.

It is when Angela goes looking to save her dear friend that she once again runs in Knox and the sparks instantly fly. Nothing goes as planned and stubbornness fights against chemistry and passion. Which will win in the end and who will come out on top?

This was my first Harlequin Nocturne Craving story and I wasn't completely sure what to expect. I was quite happy with the way the story unfolded, the bits of sizzle and sensuousness and I loved both the characters of Angela and Knox. Their personalities showed through incredibly well and I loved the push and pull between the two of them. Though short, Destined Mate was a lovely story and I greatly look forward to reading more by Katie Reus in the future.

Angela has been hiding from Knox for decades. She knows how much the Alpha werewolf hates vampires and cannot face the idea of her former lover killing her. Only the kidnapping of her friend gives her the courage to risk her heart and her life by seeing him again.

Knox has hated vampires since they destroyed his family centuries before. He believes they are all evil and should be killed on sight. That is until his lover is turned against her will.

He has searched for her for decades without success and suddenly she is on his land and in his power. Can he convince her that his feelings about vampires have changed, but his feelings for her never have?

This story was a quick read at slightly over sixty pages. Although the forbidden relationship between a vampire and a werewolf is not unique, the author develops the story well in regards to how the pack does or does not accept Angela.
Most of the tension in this book has less to do with Knox convincing Angela that he still loves her as it does with Angela not understanding his reactions as a werewolf. That is not much different than human women not understanding human men . . . now is it?

My only reservation with this story is that it is a story. I would love an expanded version that explores the dynamics of Angela’s vampire tribe and Knox’s werewolf pack. I would also like to see more of how the female werewolves accept her as their Alpha female.

When Angela was turned into a vampire against her will ninety years ago she knew her life was about to experience some major changes. The first of which was she had to get as far away from her vampire hating werewolf lover Knox as fast as she possibly could if she expected to live another day. She knew Knox’s hatred for vampires very well. Angela knew that he would never accept her in her new form. Without a second thought she ran, she ran far.

Knox is not one to pass up an opportunity. The thousand year old pack alpha is definitely a take charge type of guy. He sees Angela’s rescue mission as the much needed opportunity to get her back into his life. He never wanted her out of it. He searched for her for years. Knox isn’t above using his knowledge of her body and desire to get what he wants.

I believe novella length books work best when the main characters know each other prior to the beginning of the book. This allows for the romance to move at the needed fast pace and for the quick love to still be believable. Knox and Angela have some initial trust issues to work out, after all she believes that he wants her vampire-self dead. The conflict is minimal, not a lot of action. The romance and love story is the overall focus of Destined Mate.

My Rating:3.5 stars: Liked it a lot - recommend (B+)

Full Review at my blog here: http://www.twimom227.com/2011/12/revi...

Destined Mate is an enjoyable novella-length, stand alone story. Due to the shortened length, there isn’t much background on the two primary species: werewolves and vampires. However, Ms. Reus sprinkles the story with facts about her creations, giving the tale a enough complexity to keep up interest and feed my curiosity.

The story has two major conflicts, first when Angela confronts her coven leader and must choose to go home with the vampires or stay with the wolves. But it doesn’t end there, which is what gives this novella a plus in my book. Next, Angela and Knox must deal with the outfall of the Alpha wolf mating a vampire. It’s amazing that such a short story can adequately address both issues in a satisfying manner.

My biggest complaint about the story is that I wish it was longer. Although it isn’t lacking because of its length, Ms. Reus has created a world that left me wanting to know more. This is a good little story to fit in between novels or, if you are like me, to read while in line at the grocery story, waiting at the doctor’s office, etc.

"Destined Mate" by Katie Reus. A paranormal romance novella.

I really enjoyed this little novella! Hot and steamy, loving and caring, action packed. What more could you ask for? The characters of Knox and Angela were just right together. Even though this story is novella length, Ms. Reus gave just enough background to the characters to understand their history and understand the feelings they have toward each other. Each characters was very well rounded out.

Angela is a vampire and she's making the biggest mistake of her life...she's trespassing in a werewolf's territory. And not just any territory, her former lover's territory. She's determined to save her friend who was taken by the werewolves. She hasn't seen Knox since she was turned into a vampire against her will and hopefully she won't see him now...he hates and kills all vampires he comes across.

Knox can't believe that Angela is back. And she's trying to break into his home! She's escaped him once before and he'll be damned if lets her get away again. Not even being apart for 90 years stopped him from loving her. She will be his mate...even if a war with the vampires will result.

This novella is the first in a series that doesn't really have a name but I will definitely be reading more of them!

If you are searching for a sexy, supernatural short story, you don't need to look any further. "Destined Mate" is what a novella should be. It has a basic, single conflict and clearly defined characters. It's entertaining, engaging, and hot.

90 years ago, Angela was a human woman and crazy-in-love with Alpha werewolf, Knox. But she was turned into a vampire against her will. She was so sure he would reject her, that she ran. Now, on a mission to find a missing friend, she crosses paths with him again. And all the fire is still there between them. Can they find a way to be together despite the fact that their species are natural enemies?

Of course they can! But getting there is a fun ride. I like that these two already have a history, so we don't have to make an instant love connection. It makes their emotions so much more believable. And did I mention the hot sex? It was short (only 59 pages), but it hit the spot. A little more than 4 stars.

Angela and Knox where in love a long time ago and then Angela was turned into a vampire against her will and took off. Knox hated everything and everyone having to do with vampires and Angela didn't want him to see her as that so she left without notice. Now Angela has turned back up in his life and Knox refuses to let her go.

DESTINED MATE was a quick easy read. I kinda wish it was longer so I could enjoy it a little longer. I really enjoyed the main characters Angela and Knox. They were both set in their ways and they butted heads but they had a great passion together which made for some hot moments. I also enjoyed the little dominance fight between the Alpha and the head vampire that takes place. It added some great suspense to the story. Since it is a novella everything happens at a quicker pace but it all flowed smoothly. Pick up DESTINED MATE to give yourself a quick werewolf/Vampire fix.

Prelim Review: This is a short to the point novella, which is what I was craving so it fit the bill. Much of the character's tension as a couple is dispelled pretty quickly because they have a whole history together shattered by some misunderstandings. Its obvious from the first reunion that Knox wasn't going to roll over and let Angela go, and despite her protests (the lady doth protest too much eh?) Angela was more than willing to stay with him.

That sort of certainty is fine and dandy, but makes for a predictable read. It takes away some of the bite of how they'll get together, instead the focus being entirely on when. I do have to say I chuckled at their first foray into an intimate reunion, nothing like second-in-command's ruining the moment!

3.5 Stars!

I probably would have rated 4 if it weren't for it's such short length. I felt like something was missing, a little bit of history between them, some flashbacks, maybe even a longer epilogue...

For a novella it was pretty good at tackling the conflict of the vampire vs. werewolf. I lied the beginning especially and I though that Reus started off the book pretty well. The pace was great too, considering the short length.

If you're looking for something that is fast paced, HEA, mixed with an alpha werewolf and stubborn vampire then this novella is definitely for you.

Wow...this was a sexy and fast paced read. This novella captures the reader from beginning to end. The downside is that the story is over just as it begins. I always love a cross species romance and what better story than a vampire and werewolf. I would definitely read this one again. Enough said!

Katie Reus is the must author to read. Don't sleep on her.

Finding Home!!!

Knox and Angela......What a beautiful story!

Loved how they never stopped loving each other despite the long separation......and because of circumstances they were apart for so long.

Knox not letting Angel (as he calls her) go after she literally drops back into his life was beautiful done.
