🖊 My review: In a world where no pets are allowed, a man sneakily takes something from the forest to keep as a pet while he works. Well, he wants the company, and what is the harm in that? When Gremm, one of his bosses, wants the key to the treasure, he – well, I will not give the story away. I was surprised at the general topic of this short science fiction story, and the dénouement was the best and ultimate surprise. I quite enjoyed reading this flash short story from the Golden Age of Science Fiction.

🔲 Excerpts of note:
🔹 There was no sign of Gremm, but my beautiful pet was waving her pearl-green feelers as she always did. . . . No one is going to believe that a fly-catcher plant—even a big one like mine—would actually be able to . . . .

🔹 I can't tell anyone about it. In the first place, they'd never believe me. And, if they did, I'd probably be punished for having her. Because we aren't allowed to have pets of any kind.

In a future society, a citizen of "lesser" intellect and no appreciable skills is placed in charge of guarding the Treasury by a council member. Per the law, no single council member is allowed access to the Treasury. There must be three members. It is also against the law to have a pet, but the protagonist has one hidden away behind a screen to keep him company while he guards the Treasury. All is well until one council member demands access to the Treasury.

A wonderful little story.

I mean, who doesn't love a sweet, adorable little pet. They're so much more human than people.

I've always had a dark sense of humour and this story reminded me of some of the more unsavoury bosses I worked for in my day.

It also reminded me of some of the more unpalatable friends, and even roommates I have known in my life. Those who seemed to have very long noses as they talked to me.

Ah, Audrey. We once were such friends.

This was a rather boring little story. It started out good with a futuristic society of super intelligent beings deciding the fate of the one guy with lesser intelligence than the rest. The story could have gone so many ways but ended up with an antagonist who is supposed to be smarter than the protagonist but wasn't.
