In the ranks of NCAA college basketball, Duke University is like something scraped off the bottom of a shoe. It's like a nasty virus you catch from a door handle at a public toilet.
No team in sports is as uniquely hated as those smug, entitled, floor-slapping, fist-pumping, insufferable Blue Devils. The loathing has almost reached the level of a religion. Christian Laettner is a punk. Amen. The Cameron Crazies are obnoxious. The Plumlees are worthless times three. Coach K is a jerk. Kumbaya.
The team is dogged by an intense hatred that no other team can match—and for good reason. Millions of hoops fans and March Madness aficionados around the world are not imagining things. Duke really is evil, and within the pages of Duke Sucks, Reed Tucker and Andy Bagwell show readers exactly why Duke deserves to be so detested. They bruise and batter the Blue Devils with fact after fact, story after story, statistic after statistic. They build an airtight case that could stand up in a court of law.
So sit back in your "I Hate Duke" t-shirt, and in true Duke fashion, force someone poorer than you to do your work as you crack open the ultimate guide to Duke suckitude.
I am a journalist and author who writes mostly about pop culture. My work has appeared in the New York Post, Esquire, USA Today, the New York Times and Oprah magazine. I'm still not sure how that last one happened. I live in New York City.
This book is a must read for all college basketball fans. I laughed out loud in several spots. It's hilarious, informative, and "probably" 100% factual. LOL!
A funny read at times with some witty writing. Probably 1-2 valid arguments here. Interesting that Duke like many other basketball schools rarely plays an away game out of conference against a formidable foe at some other campus. They’ll play at a neutral courts but they played one true away game this year. And lost. A lot of publicity can go both ways. Like a lot schools they have had a lot talent but duke players rarely make great nba players other than grant hill, who also is a classy high character guy. Unc on the other hand has had a lot. Jordan and worthy are both in the hall of fame. Wallace, Jamison, stackhouse we’re also pretty good pro players. Some funny laughs for avid basketball fans. A former unc player was quoted a number of times throughout the book, Dewey Burke. Think he was a walk on because I had never heard of him.
this was definitely an interesting book. the jokes and comparisons were at some points offensive and that took away from the non-seriousness of the book. the data collected was interesting and backed up their points but most of the points were just based on vibes.
I enjoyed the Forward and Introduction, but apart from a few bright spots I just thought this book was mean. As a UNC alum I enjoy getting my hate in Duke as much as the next person, but some of the "charges" and explanations were so petty they felt like they would come from...well, Duke.
It’s true, Duck sucks, and we have this book to prove it. If you hate Duke, which you probably do, you’ll like this book. A bit of sophomoric humor? Yes but it’s a fun book, but at the same time it made me angry reading about all the crap that Duke does, so don’t read this if you’re already in that kind of mood. It was a quick read (I read it on one cross country plane ride) and a bit over priced at $9.99 for a 160 page e-book. I debated 3 or 4 stars. I went with 3 in the end as it was a bit repetitive at times (yes Duke sucks we get it) and the aforementioned price, but overall I enjoyed it.
Book is a good mixture of historical facts (a bit of Disney mixed with the great Oz + 60 million cigarettes= Duke University), basketball statistics (how many erroneous calls has Karl Hess made? How do those "egos" fair in the NBA?), Coaching (the flop), Cameron Crazies (painted face = witness protection?), and media bias (two words- Dick Vital). It was a cold, rainy week and this was my page turning guilty pleasure. It's hilarious!
Funny. Hating Duke is so much fun. I only wish that I hadn't moved to North Carolina so close to Coach K's inevitable retirement. (Although my husband can't wait for the day.) So glad I got to get in on the fun for the time being! But this book gives me hope that Duke will still suck even after he leaves. Apparently they have always sucked! Yes! I am a good Christian woman, but I have to say "Go to Hell, Duke!!!" Yeah!!! LOL Go Tar Heels!!!
I won’t write much on this book as this was just for fun, but it was nice that this book was written by two UNC grads. They split the book up into charges against the dook program such as flopping and having a lot of players transfer to other schools. All in all, a fun book and a very quick read. Highly suggest it if you hate dook as much as I do.
Duke Sucks is exactly what any basketball fan wants to read. It is funny, it tells basketball facts and talks about why Duke sucks. It was an enjoyable read and easy to get through. Many times through out the book I busted out laughing. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes college sports or just hates Duke.
Greatest book ever written! Seriously, for Tar Heel fans this is a fun read that reinforces our hatred of Duke. Similar to "To Hate Like This is to be Happy Forever," but in an even more tongue-in-cheek style.
Outstanding!!!! A must read book for everyone. A thorough and thought provoking analysis of all dook suckitude. My only complaint is that the consistently misspell dook (and always with a small "d").
Just re-read. Truly belongs in the pantheon of great literature.
Very funny. My family thinks I was a ghost writer on this book. I was not. But, to be so unashamedly biased, they do show small measures of grace of K's hair & the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee. I enjoyed it.
This was a pretty funny and very fast read. I laughed out loud several times. Of course, these two guys were preaching to the choir; I have been a UNC fan for many, many years and I am proud of it.
Given to me by one of my students at the end of the school year, it was an extremely quick read. Written by two UNC alums, it is an incredibly biased account of why Duke stinks and is hated by so many. Some slightly humorous parts and does get to a few of the main reasons Duke is so hated by Tar Heels and others across the country as well, but does get too personal (talking about their cheerleaders, etc.). An extremely quick read-finished it in a day. Would only recommend to UNC fans who hate Duke. Everyone else would think it was utter trash.
Quite funny. Although much of it is accurate, the authors definitely have conflicting interest in it. On the other hand, Duke deserves everything that is said about them in the book.
