Now, at the age of 80, she has finally decided to tell her extraordinary life story - and it's well worth the wait.
Fight!: Thirty Years Not Quite at the Top [Hardcover]: From a childhood spent making smoke bombs, killing wasps and carving soap in 70s Kent, Harry Hill then found himself in charge of hundreds of sick people as a junior doctor. Out of his depth and terrified, he chucked it all in to pursue his dream of becoming a stand-up comedian. Battling his way through the 90s Comedy circuit he quickly rose to become a household name and one of the UK's most celebrated comics, almost making it to the top of the showbiz tree . . .
Born in Oxford, England in 1941 and educated at Newnham College, Cambridge, Miriam Margolyes is a veteran of stage and screen, an award-winning actress who achieved success on both sides of the Atlantic. Her voice work has been internationally acclaimed & she is regarded as the most accomplished female voice in Britain: she has recorded many audio books including Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, Alice in Wonderland & Alice Through the Looking-Glass, Matilda, Pinnocchio, The Worst Witch series, The Queen & I (one of the best-selling audio books in the world) The Little White Horse, The Sea, Troy & Wise Child ).
This was tremendous. Not my usual sort of read but I was recommended it and decided to give it a go Miriam Margolyes is funny, articulate and a wee bit rude ( 🫣🫢well maybe more than a bit 🤭) and I expected that. I didn’t expect her to talk so honestly and passionately about her beliefs and opinions. I admire people who have the courage of their convictions and are prepared to stand up for them. Few people are prepared to be so brave in this cruel world of judgement and cancel culture. I really loved the chapter about Dickens and her one woman play Dickens’ women. Oh how I wish I had seen that. She is brave but also full of kind humility and humanity. The sort of person you wish was a friend. I would love to sit and have tea with her.
I learnt a lot from this book, I think it is a book with an ethos that will stay with me…and I highly recommend it..
Strong language, naughtiness and not for children or sensitive, easy to offend souls.
I didn't think it was possible to love Miriam more than I already did…clearly I was wrong.
Miriam is unforgettable — reliably honest, outrageous, and delightful. This memoir is all that and more. Yes, it’s an absolute ride, but beyond the wild (and often unbelievable) stories, there’s so much heart here. She’s one of us — but also, somehow, otherworldly.
Never one to shy away from a graphic story, yes — this book is packed with tales that’ll make your eyes widen to encapsulate your whole face. But it’s also so much more. Miriam gives us context. She shows us her humanity — and reminds us of ours. Yes, she shocks, but she also embraces us in a warm hug. My biggest takeaway? That true authenticity, without shame, is powerful. And infectious. I walked away bolder, more honest, and more daring. No, I’m not on her level (who is?), but the influence of this book should not be underestimated.
Who would like this book? Anyone craving honesty, belly laughs, a few tears, and maybe a little challenge to the status quo. It’s a bloody good book. Also: listen to the audiobook if you can. She’s pure magic.
Nutshell: Just as Miriam is memorable, this book is seared into my brain in the best possible way. Did I scream with laughter and blush with horror? Absolutely. But beneath it all, this is a deeply charming memoir that I implore everyone to read.
Miriam Margolyes is one of our best-known and most versatile character actors and might be said to have (as one character in Jurassic Park describes another) ‘a deplorable excess of personality’. Her overwhelming presence, which reminds me of some of my more formidable and ferocious mishpocha, crushes anything in its path. So much so that reading this memoir is rather like watching a road accident as it happens: transfixed in horrified fascination at the unfolding carnage, you can do nothing to stop it. I do hope for her sake that she had the text suitably picked over by her lawyers, as she says some very salty and possibly litigious things about people who are still alive. It’s also scatological and even pornographic to a degree that I cannot help feel is somewhat affected. So if you allow younger readers, bewitched by the author’s association with the ‘Harry Potter’ universe (she played one of the teachers at Hogwarts in two of the films), to read this (and why shouldn’t you?) be prepared to answer some very awkward questions.
Fun, but probably truly interesting for real fans only
I totally love Miriam Margolyes! She really is a national treasure! And the book is fun, don't get me wrong. But it's not maybe edited tightly, so that you want to keep reading. There's isn't necessarily a hook at the end of the chapter, enticing you to keep going. That's good for dipping in and out of the book while commuting or waiting at a doctor's surgery or something.
You hear Miriam's voice loud and clear, that's for sure, so her true followers will have a blast! I feel guilty for not finishing the book, but am happy to pick it up here and there when the fancy takes me.
While I enjoy being a Miriam Margolyes adherent, my preference goes to the scripted over ad lib, in regard to same sex sexual preference which has been around since creation listening to the author pushing her preference in words for profit defeats her purported purpose. Meanwhile… it is great to listen to the voice of been there done that in many countries, for longer than many of we have been alive, remembering that only the older English generations have mastered Toilet Humour and a specific culture that makes repeated use of it. Thank you for your collected words Miriam Margolyes on sooo many levels of life, very much appreciated :-)
I enjoyed this book. It was interesting learning more about the life of this wonderful actor. The first time I remember seeing her was in the movie, The Age of Innocence, based on the 1920 novel by Edith Wharton. Her 2021–2022 roadtrips through Scotland's Highlands with fellow actor Alan Cumming are hilarious and fun.
I was curious to learn about this actress and hoped to educate myself on what makes her unique. I enjoyed this book although I wonder why she wrote it as if mainly British people would be the readers. This diminished it a bit for me. Although her heart is open and she is not terribly judgmental, her editorial staff should have also tried to be inclusive. Still a good read.
Love this straight talking lady, her attitude towards life is wonderful. The book talks of her life from child to present day. I was giggling within a few minutes of beginning to read. Well worth a read.
